I know the blowthrough setup isn't the best method for this type of engines, since their carburetor isn't meant to take boost. Despite that, I wanted to give it one more chance before I move to the drawthrough setup.
Trying to supercharge a model engine with a centrifugal compressor is is way harder than the positive displacement ones. This thing has to spin at hundreds of thousands of revolution in order to give some useful numbers.
Nevertheless, I wanted to do it as I know many people would be interested in seeing it.
Next up is the draw through setup, for which I'm very curious to see how it's going to work. Chances are that overall it's going to be better.
Of source we need to measure the power output, that's why I'm planning to build a prony brake dyno and see the results.
And yes, at some point it will be mounted on a r/c car. Most of the I engines
I have, will be mounted on something, because I'm too tired as you seeing them all the time on a stand.

I'm guessing this produces LESS power with the "supercharger" attached than it does naturally aspirated. There is a lot of drag involved and very little in the way of air pumping, plus a portion of that air-pumping is going to the tank for pressurizing the fuel.
@tarstarkusz
@tarstarkusz 3 роки тому
@Alpha Wërks automotive I know they need more than 6 tenths of a pound of boost to make more power. The amount of extra fuel you can burn with 6 tenths of a pound of pressure is most likely far less than what it takes to turn the supercharger.

A dynamic compressor is going to be much harder to get down right than a positive displacement supercharger would, but you probably know that better than I do anyway. But honestly, I don't care if it works or not, the fact that you were abled to make that and get it even this far is absolutely beyond cool to me. Very, very cool! @EricErnst
@EricErnst 3 роки тому
I've got a centrifugal supercharger on my truck. It has a gear reduction in the supercharger drive and further reduction with the drive pulleys. Yours is direct drive so you really need to overcompensate with your pulleys. Couple that with the unit's small size and you really have to spool it up to create any pressure. I know that your previous testing of gearboxes dictated your use of direct drive. Until you can spool it up properly, you'll never make much boost. Centrifugal superchargers have a rising boost curve. You'll just have to spin it faster to build boost. My v8 engine sees about 2psi at 2500 engine rpm. At 5000rpm, I'm seeing about 6.5psi. At 5500rpms, I have measured 8.5psi. I have a pulley drive ratio of 2:1 and gear drive ratio of 3.61:1. So a final ratio of about 7.22:1. According to the manufacturer, it is capable of 52,000rpms and 22psi. I think your homemade supercharger needs more rpm. Could you build another set of pulleys and spin it up with a drill to spin it faster than your 77,000rpms to measure your pressure? A cordless drill spins around 1200-1500rpms. If you reuse your original crank pulley, you could probably make something work by only making one more small pulley. Good luck with everything. I'll definitely be watching for updates.

I agree on everything. All these videos are just a preparation for the positive displacent supercharger that I'm planning to make. Honestly, I think it's the wisest option for this little motor. The centrifugal supercharger builds boost exponentially as you said, and at this scale, things are even worse. I hope you understand.

@@johnnyq90 If you make a larger supercharger, it'll put out more pressure. That wouldn't do much, as the intake ports are pretty tiny as-is. The pressure is just building up, and not going into the motor as easily. Maybe enlarge the intake and exhaust ports, and build a larger diameter exhaust as well? You'll want to size it the same as the valves on both sides. Intake should be larger than exhaust, as it is with most 2-valve motors.
@joshfoley8862
@joshfoley8862 3 роки тому
@@mattio79 I believe the fuel in the inlet of the supercharger indicates what you're saying as well. Air does not seem to be going through the engine as efficiently as it should.
@pauljs75
@pauljs75 3 роки тому
You also have to consider the size of the compressor impeller in its ability to accelerate air to produce pressure, and the fact that the relation between air mass and volume present some scaling issues. The smaller it goes in radius, the higher and higher the RPM the impeller must spin to do anything. Then the problem ends up running into material limits and tolerances. In this case bigger is better, and the tiny scale engine certainly presents challenges.

Congratulations, even with the tools at your disposal, I don't think it's an easy task to build a balanced carburetor like the one you made, to make the correct "air and fuel" mixture. With this supercharger in your opinion, what is the real gain? Leandro Wagner.
@johnnyq90
@johnnyq90 3 роки тому
Hi Leandro. Honestly, I'm not sure if with this setup we'll see any significant gains. With the draw through setup (carburetor before compressor) on the other hand, I think it will be more interesting. Air/fuel ratio should be much easier to adjust. Right now the fuel needle valve is way too open (too rich) to prevent the engine from going too lean. This problem should solved with the draw through setup. I'll be able to lean it enough (more power), and still be in the safe zone.

Nice machine build. A couple thoughts; Most driven centrifugal super chargers spin in the rpm range you are running, however they have a much larger diameter on the compressor. The diameter builds the pressure, the vane height builds volume. With that said, boost pressure should be tested while flowing. Negative displacement pumps are prone to cavitation. Once cavitation occurs flow and boost fall off dramatically. You could actually be running more than 0.6lbs. Your motor could be consuming all the boost too. If you measure boost while running, you can see where the boost curve peaks & falls. Keep at it

Great work Johnny! I would recommend though that on such small scale(s), the compressor inducer inlet step is to great for smooth air flow. I think you'd get better performance(air velocity) if you bevel/tapper/blend the SC inlet valve to match the compressor wheel's inducer radius. You may also want to consider port-matching all your components. While working with components this scale, every little burr, crack, imperfection, etc. will have a profound affect on air flow. Good luck and I can't wait to see more!
@944obscene
@944obscene 3 роки тому
I love this series of videos and am excited to see where all of this goes. Already looking forward to the next updates! A couple things to sort out. When sizing a compressor to an engine, the airflow is what you want to calculate. In order to know if the compressor is the optimal size for the engine, you'd want to sort out the CFM per RPM of both the engine as well as the compressor. It appeared as though the gauge you connected to the outlet was measuring the force of compressed air from the supercharger, but this won't give you a usable number for a couple of reasons. First, the compressor not being a positive displacement unit, won't do a great job of maintaining pressure, even with the centrifugal effect, you'll get reversion at the inlet (also possible if the AR isn't high enough to overcome the pressure difference in the scroll I.E. the inducer air-speed stalls because the exducer doesn't have a high enough ratio, and is being overcome with backpressure). This begs the question if you might need a larger compressor to feed the engine, but more importantly, you can't get accurate information measuring static pressure. You'll need to figure out how to measure the pressure of the FLOW of air inside the plenum. Compressor output is important, but understanding how that correlates to the inlet consumption of the engine is the most important metric. Could you not plum the pressure gauge to the tank backpressure bung? The other factor to consider is that you're not just creating air pressure, but increased flow (ideally). It's possible the higher drive ratio is allowing the compressor to feed just enough air to the engine to match natural aspiration. Without knowing the CFM data across the operating range (effectively, your compressor map) it's anyone's guess. You could play with some math to get an idea where things are now. Ultimately, I think you'll have a better run of luck with a positive displacement unit, where you can calculate linear differences in output-per-RPM. A good starting point would be to measure volumetric efficiency as both CFM and a factor against the displacement of the engine, then build a compressor using that data so you can land squarely in a good efficiency range.

Loving the vids as always! I used to have a carburettor turbo 12a rotary in an rx7 many years ago (suck through set up). One big positive with suck throngh was idle and low end tuning is much easier as you can just tune idle as you would non turbo. And your main jets are turned for positive pressure, but cold start is difficult on suck through. Fuel injection for combustion engines was like lipo batteries for the r/c world... A game changer.

RC engines for 50+ years have used exhaust to pressurize the fuel tank. Making it boost pressurized doesn't make any sense. Factory supercharged RC 4 stroke glow engines like the venerable OS Surpass engines still used exhaust pressurization for the fuel tank.

There is even a kit that you can buy for this engine for an exhaust manifold and muffler It would have been extremely easy for him to use exhaust pressure but Johnny q is a hack that has no idea what he’s doing but insists on acting like it. For example he points out in like every video that he’s using his tachometer wrong and everyone tells him and yet he doesn’t listen. “I am using it right!!!” Well you’re using it a different way every time there’s no fucking way you even know how to use the one you got.

In my day, ( 1961 Apprenticed for SIX years Mechanical Engineering ) I could have made the inlet manifold BY HAND in a couple of hours, from a drawing, without using ANY machine tools. The site of CNC machines doing all the work, is not very pleasant to watch, whereas watching a craftsman with tools in his hands, is a very satisfying experience. Furthermore, the increase in volumetric efficiency of the engine is achieved by the use of a blower, but this means of increasing power is not as satisfactory as reducing the reciprocating masses, to increase RPM, and careful attention to the inlet tract flow passage, combustion chamber fluid dynamic calculations, and improvements to increase compression ratio, flame propagation pathways, and camshaft design to include the design of the plenum chamber, and valve overlap / flow design. Simply bolting on a geared up blower is something of a cop out, any fool that do that, with enough money and time.

The engine will never hit ambient pressure (> 1.0 volumetric efficiency), except possibly in a very narrow RPM range if intake and exhaust are designed todo so, so having _any_ boost is generally a plus. However, the added power must exceed the power required to spin the blower.
@Two-StrokeLife
@Two-StrokeLife 3 роки тому
@@UncleKennysPlace the problem is his pressure is a static measurement not attached to the engine and it doesn't measure flow. Some thoughts: S/C inlet is too “edgy” - some round inlet should be added (like the opening of a trumpet) to improve inflow. Next intercooler can be added, to cool compressed air, furthermore how do you measure power increase? Reving without load is not a measure. (Ok just saw the comment in the end title). Fantastic work as usual! To put things in perspective a C-1 Procharger spins at 80K rpm with a 4.25 inch exducer diameter. To get significant boost out of this one you will need dramatically higher rpm. 300K rpm and bronze journal bearings are kind of the starting point for a few psi for boost with this size impeller. Those deep groove bearings won’t cut it at those speeds.

@mesanders1113
@mesanders1113 3 роки тому
I believe psi is psi regardless of volume I could be wrong. 0.6 psi is probably barely enough boost to compensate for the added drag of the supercharger. As far as explanation for my theory is you get a big air compressor and tank you fill it to 100psi you bottle neck it down a 1/4inch hose to the nail gun and its still the same pressure minus any pressure drop from the length of the hose. Just like sea level vs the mountains it effects all NA motors the same regardless of displacement.
