I could see all kinds of problems with it. Like the components randomly falling out, structural issues that make the phone bend, people trying to use 3rd party batteries and the phone explodes, etc. Letting the consumers mess around with the hardware is never really a good idea either.

Tony Tarantula , no it isn’t a solid idea, it is one big heap of wishful thinking. Reality doesn’t work like that. There simply is no benefit to the idea at all. Even environmental benefits do not exist as it simply takes a lot more resources/packaging to build individual components as opposed to an integrated phone.

Build it as a good, up to date chassis, offer it with several stock variations with an entry, mid-range and flagship spec set up at corresponding price points. Consumers buy what they want, of course certain features like expandable memory, 3.5mm jack, bluetooth, nfc, Wifi etc should be integrated but camera modules, further memory, batteries, maybe even charger connectors could be made to plug in and play. We're on USB-c now but what if you could simply switch a module and upgrade to whatever the future is? Definitely a viable idea, just needs some thought.

I agree. The purpose of a wristwatch is to tell u time. That basic & simple purpose allows people to want adding "accessories" to it to make it not "basic" object (make it fancier). Meanwhile, the purpose of smartphone is complex, varies and very up-to-date...so adding "accessories" seems meaningless if the purpose isn't updated as well

Vertu, really did made a lot of more sense, back in the days, where they were no smartphones and the lifespan of a phone was a lot longer. I knew some rich people with Vertu phones back then and everybody loved it, it was seen as a jewelry, as fashion accessory in a world where the appearance of the phone was the main diversity factor of them, it stood out. But in the modern world, where the smartphone is basically a consumable you change every year or so, due to the fast development of software/hardware, device like that is bound to fail.

yup it didnt survive the market but it was still a pretty premium product. sure, iphones were more premium than blackberry touch screen phones but blackberry storm was more premium than any android phone on the market.

It's just that modular phones are inefficient with space and cost, the battery is never going to be good on any phone designed like that as the battery needs to slot into those sections being less efficient in space and also the battery would have to also have a protective wall on it taking up even more space or making the battery even smaller and by the time you've bought all the parts your phones going to be more expensive than most mid tier high performance phones anyway.
