Recently bought a new Equinox 800 w/wireless headphones. Spent a couple of hours on UKposts learning fom your videos to be more efficent and successfull in my adventures. I have wanted a metal detector when I would see the ads in coin magazines when I was 8 yrs old as an apprentice coin collector from my Grandmother. Now 57yrs old, Retired, Veteran, time and desire...Thank You so much for your videos.

Excellent video with lots of info for everyone Mark. A big mistake I see lots of people make is not overlapping your swings. You can watch this with so many youtube guys too. They take a swing and move up two feet and swing back. In the meantime, they just missed a huge triangle of ground. That's probably another reason no place is ever really hunted out. People walk in a hurry and miss so much stuff.

That's a great observation Michael and I totally agree. When I go to the big detecting events around the USA I see this with many people coming up to meet me and introducing themselves as fellow UKpostsrs with detecting channels. I am absolutely shocked to see even those individuals have a horrible swing pattern or technique. It is very common as is the speed at which they swing being too fast. I can always slow down in an area where I feel I have hundred it out and find something else even in my own ground I've already swung over. I'm planning on doing a part two to this video so this will definitely be talked about! Thank you for the view and comment!! 😁

Number one mistake i see is people relying on what to dig based on numbers. Going by numbers is a huge mistake but no one has ever seemed to address it.
@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic 5 місяців тому
It's just another tool in my toolbox, I honestly use all info available to make a dig no dig decision but first and foremost is tone and trusting my ears. I am never "watching numbers" but rather glancing at them after I have heard a signal that passes my sound test first. You bring up a valid point! Thank you for your view and comment!

Awesome Vidio!! But great ID on a detector is an awesome weapon to have. Tones are awesome to. But if you are relying on tones only you will be digging ALOT more iron than you want. especially on a site where you only have one shot on the site.

I'm surprised you didn't mention overlapping your swing while talking about swing speed. Of all the videos I've watched, it is by far the worst habit I see. People swinging while walking, missing huge swathes as they go. This is why some places will never be hunted out. I was at a club hunt one time and a group was walking up a slope detecting. One fellow was behind them maybe 10 paces or so and ended up finding a gold coin the others walked right over. You may think you're covering a lot of ground, and you are from point A to point B, but you cover every bit as much overlapping your swing. You just may not get to point B with everything you dig.
@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic 6 місяців тому
This is a fantastic tip and I absolutely should have mentioned this as it is a common mistake I see, even with some who consider themselves experienced detectorists! I can see when someone is out in the open areas trying to cover ground to find iron or a site, but once in the hot zone or in a park or beach for example each swing should overlap to make sure your not missing something. This is the real difference of a pro and amateur. I nerd to make a follow up video on this topic! Thank you for the view and fantastic comment! Happy hunting! 🤠

I've been detecting for 15 years, forests, fields, and beaches. All the pieces of advice given in the video are top notch. Here are the ones I give when anyone asks me. 1) NEVER DESPAIR. Some walk-out are... boring. 2) Swing your coil parallel to the ground. 3) Know perfectly your machine. That mean read the manual, chat on forums, make your own tests. 4) Get a second pack of CHARGED batteries. 5 Never do anything illegal (respect private property, report found guns, stolen items, hidden drug stashes or human remains) or dangerous (never ever fiddle with some unexploded ordinance or funky chemical containers). Be prepared, all this will happen. To you. 6) NEVER DESPAIR.
@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic 6 місяців тому
You bring up some great points and tips too! Wish I would have talked about the coil while swinging because that is a common mistake not only with beginners but experienced as well. I see this all the time at big hunts where a person walks up to talk to me and we chat about what type of detecting they do, how long they have been detecting and what machines they use. Often times I find out they are a UKposts content creator too, then I am blown away to see them lifting the coil at the end of their swings. Or how much ground they miss when they walk while swinging, etc. I am going to do another video soon on just gear where I will use your suggestion about bringing extra charged batteries (when applicable, as some of the New machines are only rechargeable). What machine do you use now? Thank you for the view, great suggestions and comment!

@carolrice2063
@carolrice2063 6 місяців тому
@@minelabdiggerNot True if you just lower the Sensitivity down until you get to know what it's trying to tell you about the target and I have started with 12 Sensitivity and I was surprised that it was hitting Target's in the 6-8 inches deep range just in the Sensitivity of 12 and the Coins will really sound off and then the jumpy VDI is telling me about the Junkyard of Target's and I know that it's going to be a junk Signal and Not a Coin whenever it jumps and I have dug a few up just to make sure it was and Now that I know that , it's going great and I have since raised the sensitivity up to 18 and I know the Tone's and Numbers to look for and hear and the X-Terra Pro is more than enough features of a Top End Detector and I ❤❤❤❤.... it. Edit : And also don't go off of what other people say until you get the X-Terra Pro in your own hands then and only then you will know what the X-Terra Pro is all about and it's a Coin Shooters Dream Detector and I have it in my own hands and I have also traded the Simplex + off for a Equinox 600 and it's going great and it's Minelab Detector's All the Time ❤.....
@carolrice2063
@carolrice2063 6 місяців тому
And also the Sensitivity is going to be Site Dependent on how Deep you want to Dig and Hear the Coin Targets and if you only want to Dig Relics and the X-Terra Pro Jumpy VDI is the best decision that you are going to Make and I'm a New Minelab Detector owner that now knows that I shouldn't of waited for so long to get a Minelab Detector and Then once you learn it, it's WoW 😲😳😮.❤..

@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic 4 місяці тому
Yes, I just called my insurance agency and told them what I was doing and I remember him saying it was the same liability insurance that they would give a independent contractor I know it's about $29 a month is what it cost me but I will try to find out more about it if you need me to. Keep in mind I'm in California so I don't know if your insurance might be less or more than that? I have a $1,000,000 policy with a $2,000,000 umbrella. Some of your suggestions I hadn't considered, thank you for those. Here's something in thanks I'll share with you & everyone reading: I sometimes I need to not miss any area within a given space (for example; looking for someone's lost wedding ring in their back yard, or where they were at a park). to do so & when feasible, I utilize two 300' long fiberglass tape rulers (Komelon 6633 Open Reel Fiberglass Tape Measure) I lay one on one side of the grid & the other 90 degrees at the base/corner. The fiberglass doesn't detect, and I walk along the one tape swinging to the end. Then I move that tape's end to as far as I swing and pin the end at that point. I return to the beginning, moving the tape over that same amount. I walk & swing so my swing reaches the tape and again walk to the end. Rinse, wash, repeat. One tape is really all that's needed for this, but I find using the two makes it easier to cover the grid. Yes, a lot of work but by doing so I cover 100% of that ground I've marked out and I know if that ring is there, I'll for sure find it.
@BrassMedic

Thank you for this great tip it is very helpful as I know a lot of people will find themselves looking for Rings at some point if they own a metal detector. Thank you also for the view and for taking the time to leave a comment!

Thanks for a great video but you say it's important to choose the right order. First sensitivity, noise cancel and last ground balance. Is it the same method for the Manticore.
@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic Місяць тому
Yes it's really the exact same sequence of events for any machine because of the reasons I said in the video which are you want your sensitivity where it needs to be first so it can hear all the Emi and the ground clearly. I hope this makes sense but it does apply to all machines. Thank you for the view and for your comment slash question!

I have trouble digging when i got pint point signal. Where to dig, under the coil?
@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic 6 місяців тому
You should buy a pinpointer so you can use it to find the metallic object in the whole or dug dirt. For a long time, we didn't have pinpointers on the market and we used a Brass rod with a rounded end on a screwdriver handle to probe the ground for the object before we dug down. But with today's modern technology you would save lots of time if you got one to use when recovering targets. Thank you for the view and comment!

Great vid Mate. I am looking to buy my first metal detector that I want to use for gold prospecting and treasure hunting. I have the opportunity to buy an X-Terra 705 for $169 or a Vanquish 440 for $349 here locally. Wat are your thoughts on that for a first detector? Regards, Jas.
@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic Місяць тому
If your priority is finding gold nuggets over coins and Relics you're going to want a machine that has a high operating frequency. The 705 Gold pack was pretty good for gold nuggets. I don't recommend the Vanquish 540 as a primary for gold nuggets but it would be fantastic for coins and Relics. If you could afford to get into the budget bracket of the gold Monster 1000, maybe even look at a used one. That is the best thing for the bucket you can get for gold nuggets but it is primarily good for gold prospecting and doesn't have a lot of features for relics and coins it's a very simple machine but will pay for itself many times over if you get into a good patch of gold. For best just all around detector The Equinox 900 and the Manticore are fantastic for gold and Relics and coins. Even consider getting an used Equinox 800. Thank you for the view and for your question and comment!

The X-Terra Pro is a fantastic machine! You should watch both my unboxing, assembly, set up, settings and review video as well as my field tips and tricks video on the X-Terra Pro. As far as coils go, you can use any of the coils made for the Equinox 800/900/600/700 so lots of great options. As far as tools goes, you will need a good pinpointer, a small digging trowel, a finds pouch for both good finds and trash, knee pads and gloves. Those are the mandatory tools you will need. Thanks for watching the video and for your comment/questions!

@BrassMedic
@BrassMedic 7 місяців тому
The person using 0 for GB may have neutral soil, it is mostly un-necessary to use any GB in neutral soil or at a sandy beach for example. It is the soil where mineralization, hematite, alkalai-salts, etc are causing the machine to false on the soil itself where GB becomes useful. A good GB before detecting in difficult ground is a good idea. I don't however recommend using tracking if you don't need to as it can adversely affect performance. If you need to use tracking, get a good fresh manual GB first before you turn it on. Some areas of the world GB at 0 is perfectly fine! Just not here 🤠 thank you for the view and your great question!

At the right location (like maybe a common prospecting club), someone could make a few bucks making one of those gardens for others to use regularly. Like 3 pennies, one at 2", 4" and 6" all labeled. Same with each currency. Also rings, chains, buttons, buckles, etc. Add with it all the common trash found at varying depths. Maybe even a prospecting store can make one out back for potential and present buyers of equipment. Can make it as elaborate as you want really.... BTW, thanks for the video :)

This is a great Point actually and I would have never thought to do that. I know my local dealer who has a hardware store has so much crazy Emi inside and outside of his building that we wouldn't be able to do it there. But that is a fantastic idea to do it for a club or maybe someone's property or house where they can invite others. Thank you for the view, the comment and for your great idea!

You are a quality individual and i'm surprised you live in California. I grew up there when i was younger in the 70's and 80's before crime, homelessness drugs and now criminals walking the streets attacking people became the norm. It's sad what happened to the state after just a decade of the wrong people mismanaging things. Anyway, i live safely in Maine, where we find relics from the 18th century often, and breathe fresh air. No poisonous snakes etc also. Anyway, are you totally serious about your thing if you find say a 20 dollar gold piece your going to just hand it over to the land owner? You have already done all these other things, made sure you are respectful have permission etc. I do the same as far as asking for permission have never found a gold piece but have found gold rings etc. I learned early on if the owner seems either too interested in having things i find or is greedy, I bring along a couple indian head cents worth about a dollar or two, i call them decoys lol. Anyway, i consider myself honest and decent but don't think i would go to the extremes you do. You mentioned leaving the land as good or better but what about making sure you are skillful with your plugs, using a knife or small tool rather than guys ive seen lugging spades. Anyway, nice info. Cheers! tom in maine.

Investigating different youtube People.. I'll see if you do reviews or setups on certain machines. because I'm considering the Xterra pro.. It seems to be within my budget For getting into it now. Rather than stick with the $100 machine realm. I'm learning about it little by little before I probably get it.

You don't have to get permission to hunt that spot?
@BrassMedic

I'm not sure which spot you're talking about? Obviously anything privately owned yes you would have to have permission on. Thank you for your view and for your comment!

We do very well with old wagon roads here too. There were 3 different roads here all next to each other. The main freighter roads were for teamsters with freight wagons being pulled by multiple ox, miles or horses. Those roads were heavily rutted and bumpy and dusty. Only slow moving teams and wagons were allowed. The middle road was for horse drawn buggies, wagons and stage coaches, this road was more smooth and wide. The smallest road was for foot traffic and horseback riders only. The roads here in the 1848-1865 era were very busy in what is now California. They had to divide the roads into 3 parts so everyone would have room. These old roads are full of horseshoes, wagon and stage coach parts including jingle bells, crotal bells and horse rack of all kinds. An occasional coin or relic too. Thanks for the view and comment!
