I have to say, I never realized how common it is for people to live in their cars until I started doing it myself. I never noticed it before because people were good at being stealth. Now that I sleep on public lots and pay attention to my surroundings, I see invisible people everywhere 😆

Your comment stirred up some ole memories. As a single woman in a city I found myself unexpectedly out of work and consequently, no place to live. TWICE 😱 So I used my sedan once, single cab p/up second (and worst lol). Daytimes in nearly every large parking lot with any shade trees I began to recognize I wasn’t alone. Lots of others also had no place to go. Overnights were particularly challenging. It was the 90’s. I had no money, no gear, no skills and no Google or Y/T either. ‘Nomad’ wasn’t a word way back then. Now I remember, there were actually so many ppl around in my sitn but I didn’t see it until right now. Now some still do it by necessity, but many do it by for adventuring, and because we love it. Who knew!

I think that car living is perceived kind of harshly by the general population. There seems to be sort of an underlying negative connotation to it, when it reality it’s just an innovative, alternative way to live. For some it’s by necessity and for others it could just be a preference. Either way I feel like it’s hard for people to grasp who dont have an interest in or are actively doing it

Agree! We are budget minded! Sadly tho there are homeless in their cars with tents in the coldest wettest time of year & it can't be comfortable for them. I have made meals for them.

Nice moves with the storage, especially. I went 500 days of Canadian winter-twice-in a chevy HHR with a tip for your electrical. Instead of LED lighting all the time, have an old school 100W .light bulb and a cast Iron frying pan. Not as efficient as LED but with your air circulation, thr light bulb in the fry pan will keep you warm for nothing, practically, with the up side of having a warm fry pan in the coffee for breakfast. The cast iron protects the bulb nicely.

You should get a cb radio to get traffic alerts. And maybe handheld police scanner for emergency alerts to. I have some of the stuff you recommended. Ive driven semi truck for 17 years. We can relate to you from being on the road alot. Dont forget little 12 volt air compressor . You probably got first aid kit. Tools, duct tape, extra coolant, oil, washer fluid. Most truckers stock up on all fluids and fuses .

Try to split the cost of rent between a couple friends or family. Most people WILL be happier in a shared living arrangement than solo car/van camping. My guarantee's: You will be hassled by the police (regardless of race/age); You will need to find ways to spend your free time (online, in nature, with friends/family, volunteering, etc); You will need to plan for your climate (staying warm or cool) because running the vehicle for extended periods isn't feasible.

Would add a hidden gps somewhere in the vehicle, a hidden safe, a small 12v electric pad or something, a small carry bag with cell phone battery and cable, water filter, small rain cover, a snack, small first aid kit to carry with you. Of course you have your cell phone, gps app with you. A darker bed cover for a bit more stealth. Good luck and thanks for the information

Good video, an important item I always have in my backpack and in my car to keep me warm is a $3 emergency blanket. They're flimsy they make a lot of noise, but they can keep you very warm if tucked slightly under your sleeping bag and around you. They do cause some condensation but not enough to get you wet, I used one at 8200 ft in October in a tent. I had to unzip my sleeping bag I got so warm and before I used it I was freezing I couldn't sleep.

15yr nomad list for newbies: 1. A super reliable vehicle--> Toyota or Honda 2. Replace the car's starter battery with a deep cycle AGM quality battery; especially for serious off roaders! Buy a Noco battery jumper. 3. Mini 12volt air compressor with extention cable. Tire plug kit. 4. Tool bag 5. Soft-sided bags for storage. Not space hogging plastic drawers. Bags can be stuffed into the tight crevasses of a small vehicle. Pillow cases work well. 6. Anker battery pack(s). (I hardly use my Jackery, just my little $35 Anker has been enough for my minimal power needs. **Be a minimalist, don't have a lot of electronic gadgets! *LESS IS MORE! 7. Bear &/or wasp spray. Just having it will make you feel more secure, which is a comfort to most ppl who live on wheels. The panic alarm on your key phob is another varmint deterrent. LED powerful flashlight too; it's good for blinding ppl, among other things. 8. Knobby pickup truck floor mats. These are the poor man's "recovery boards" if you get stuck, just shove them in front of ur tires. * These are a duel-use item. Have as many things as possible that serve for more than just one function. 9. Spray bottle, paper towels & bandanas. Don't have a sink or wash basin in your rig, it wastes space & water! Eat right out of your cook pot & immediately spray it with h20 & vinegar, then wipe when done. * Backpacker's gear for cookware. Titanium fork, spoon & pot. A regular 8" pan for cooking eggs. MSR dromedary bags for h2o storage, 10 liter bags will hold 2gal of h2o from the vending machines.👌👍 (These bags save a lot of space in a small camping rig; they're pricey, but worth it. $60 for the large 10L canvas bags.) 10. Mini chuck box "kitchen" for cooking inside ur vehicle. Buy or build one to securely hold small fuel bottles for cooking. I use the 1lb propane bottles with a backpacker's stove & adapter. * Have a way to safely cook in your rig, because cooking outside does NOT work for full-time vehicle dwellers. I made my chuck box from an owl's nesting box that I picked up at a feed store. It's made out of thin plywood & measures only 10x12x10 inches. It's worked great for yrs in my suv motor lodge. Happy Trails!

I also got the WeatherTech window covers and am not disappointed because they fit all ten windows really well, since they make them specifically for the model of car. However, I did end up covering the black side with felt because I was resting in my car once and I heard a conversation outside to the effect they were wondering if my windshield was broken, but realized that the cracks were from the creases in the plastic on the black side of the window covers. Anything that draws attention like that is not so stealthy (I wanted the windows to look like they were just very tinted so much that they were black).

Here are some reasons i like my jackery 500. My big jackery was stolen so i borrowed the 500 from my son. It is SILENT (golden). I have 2 usbA led lights from Ikea ($3.50 cad) and a usb fan from Giant Tiger ($17.00). The 2 lights + fan use LESS THAN 1 WATT COMBINED. The Jackery is permanently plugged into the lighter which tops it up to 100% everytime I go to the store. I only really use the AC for my immersion blender. The parasitic draw on the 500 is so much lower than my big jackery was that the 500 is actually far more useful to me.

Congratulations on getting straight to the point--a YoutTube video rarity. A suggestion for a sleeping platform: 3 or 4 heavy duty 27 gallon totes as the platform with a cot mattress on top which makes the best use of available space. Keep your vehicle as stealthy as possible with it looking like a truck on the Beverly Hillbillies. My goal for my van is for it to look like a soccer mom van. But too much stuff hanging off your vehicle is not a good look.

@RavRoving
@RavRoving 14 днів тому
Agreed, depends on how cold your region gets. Im planning on buying a heated sleeping bag for this upcoming winter to see how it does
@stevec3872
@stevec3872 5 днів тому
Get a heating pad that doesn't shut off every 3 hours & place it to warm your core. Add a good sleeping bag and you're in business. In my van I would use a propane heater for 10 minutes just to take the edge off the cold. There are many ways to successfully to that in an area a small as a car or van.

There was one item that I was intrigued by, and that was the little light with the bug zapper. for me it would be extremely useful to kill mosquito's, being as I'm allergic to them. I'm definitely going to have to find possibly one or more of them. because where I'm at there's a lot of them. and all a person has to do is open a door or window for less than a minute, and they are in you're vehicle. and for me I don't think they can kill me. but with enough bites they can make me rather ill.

I would add for windows. - Getting windows tinted to help with stealth and heat (uv protection) during the daytime. - Also you can buy window rain guards for the front and rear seat windows. these give you some airflow when it's raining. The rear seat window rain guards can also come with a netting strip that allows you to get the fresh air without letting bugs get in, and people walking by only see the rainguard, not the opening or the netting strip. - and maybe a fold up solar panel or two for charging up when you're in the sticks.

You should consider getting a laptop/tablet like a Surface Pro, one with a keyboard that can be stuffed into the gap between the visor and the ceiling of the car on the passenger side and a Bluetooth keyboard with a touchpad. What this would do for you is allow you to have a hanging screen without any required installation. The magnets are strong enough to support the weight of the monitor/tablet part (at least with a Surface Pro) and with the rotation lock undone in Windows, the screen automatically flips upside down for you and there goes. You have a screen to watch any streamed media. If you have any devices that use miracast, that works well. The downside would be the lack of HDMI inputs, but if you got a portable monitor with a built in kickstand, you can take some good string and string it across the visor and let it hang down low enough to create an anchoring point to wedge between the kickstand and the body of the screen. To stabilize it, you can rest the top of the screen against the visor and even angle it a bit downwards towards you. Personally, I couldn't stand watching tv/playing games at foot level. 😹😹

You can simplify even more. You have too many battery banks, you can use an LED light that folds up and not rigid big long light…I have a small plug in heater right into my jackery with temp control to take the edge off … the fan you have is to big and you might consider a wireless 10” fan that includes a light with clips (Walmart) - your emergency kit is good. .the frig is big but then off I eat mostly protein so that about all that goes in my frig. Be safe and live simply…

I use a secondary automotive battery with a 300 w inverter. 12 months in and right thru the winter in Canada. Never had an issue with power. I think too many people try to accessorize the setup. I spent $500 to do everything I needed.
@RavRoving
@RavRoving 11 місяців тому
I have multiple power banks so i can leave one in the car to run my fridge while i charge the other one. Otherwise when the battery dies then what? You dont power your fridge for hours while you charge your power station and lose all of your perishables. I dont drive enough on a consistent basis to do a significant charge on my power station. Also the long light is strictly for the awning which i only use at a legit campsite. I have various other lights. Same as the fan. I do have a battery powered fan which i mentioned in the video. But in my experience multiple fans are superior. I wouldn’t consider it too big considering it only consumes around 7-10w. Everyone has their methods and this is what has worked well for me
