marcus and kara's storylines can absolutely end before the third act. kara can literally die in her very first playable section simply by doing nothing when actually told to do so. both she and alice with be killed.

Surprised Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice isn't on here. The game makes a big show of the rot crawling up your arm when you die and the game warns you that it will be Game Over if it reaches your head. It never actually reaches your head and just stops growing after a while

In Detroit, Kara can die in the chapter Stormy Night which is only like chapter 6 or 7 overall and only your second chapter playing as Kara. That is most definitely not the “last 3rd of the game”

Actually Kara can die even before saving Alice, and on road she and Alice can be hit by a car, AND can be game overed by Zlatko, AND Marcus can die in the march scene before act 3, so I'm not sure you did your homework about Detroit

And, just like with “Arkham City,” “South Park: The Stick of Truth” also has a choice that’s not a choice. Near the end of the game, when the New Kid has to go up into Mr. Slave’s ass to disarm the Snuke. If you simply, instead, just walk out of the room, the Snuke goes off, the town is destroyed, everyone dies, and the show’s end credits roll. But then you just start back at the auto-save point with Mr. Slave so you can actually go on with the game.

Little hope there’s actually more then just two endings

Saving your friends in The Walking Dead just means they’ll die a scripted unavoidable death later. When you come to the first time they could die for real, you just know that they won’t make it to the end of the game. Most upsetting choice was to choose between Kenny and Jane.

The characters that are with the main character are reflections of his family from a house fire as a kid, not from the bus crash as no one was on the bus.

I completed Mass Effect Legendary Edition for the first time on the day FFVII: Rebirth came out (And funnily enough on my birthday) and OH BOY I was so excited. Until I finished it. At first, I was stunned, then a little disappointed, and then angry. Thank the Gods for fan fiction.

Also, in “Dragon Quest,” (The first “Dragon Warrior” on the NES, as I grew up knowing it.) the very first screen, the King’s Throne Room, has two chests to open to start you out: one has 120 gold, so you can buy your first weapon and armor. The second has a key. Which would be great except you need the key just to unlock the door just so you can leave the Throne Room! The first key is just a huge tease!

in Batman Arkham City there actually is dialog during their fake credits from Oracle that gives you context on the aftermath of your choice when you turn tail and run as Cat Woman... right before they rewind and make it meaningless lol.

Detroit become Human, the characters can die or be written out of the story in various chapters, some times by doing nothing, you actually have to go out of your way to get those endings though.

About the Dragon Quest entry, the most fun example I remember is Golden Sun 1 & 2, there is multiple times when you can say ''no'', but your party always take over the response with funny quips and remarks

They added an outro! It's a small thing that just finishes off the video with a nice little bow, lol. Thank you. I don't play a lot of video games and usually games I'm hyped for, I try not to consume too much information about it so as to not be spoiled and can experience everything new. I'm not sure if this is a "lie", per se, as I don't know if Square Enix ever advertised this, but the open world of FF XV didn't really have much to offer. Most of the time, you're just sitting in the car and driving around. Anything that you do "stumble" upon usually was part of the story anyways, like a dungeon. So, there isn't really a lot of reason to explore around that much except for doing things in the order that you want to (up to a point. The game will block you from traveling too far too early in the game).

ive thought about the end of mass effect 3 for some time and ive come to a conclusion. the issue with the three colored choices is that there is a choice at all. if the game checked the save file (and all connected save files) and counted how many paragon, and renegade options you took, then counted how many times you found the "help everyone/middle ground" solution and pushed you into the ending you had been choosing all along it would have made each choice made through the entire trilogy important and meaningful to the ending. yes more in each ending would be better still, yes the ghost child thing was really convoluted, and yes not having an option to side with the reapers and be harvested means not all options are explored. but if bioware made the choices actually impact an ending you cant control other than through choice, it would have been more meaningful.

Don't forget about the fourth ending for Mass Effect. Instead of picking a color, fire your pistol at the Starchild and get the Bad Ending where earth is destroyed and instead of the 'Tell me another Shepard story" you get Liara's voice recording warning of the Reaper threat and schematics for the Crucible to future space faring races.

Number 2 is a big thing in other games as well, like borderlands 3 tried to be more of an RPG and give you choices, and there's one part where rhys asks you about something. You can see on the side of the screen where it says this choice will make a major impact...when no matter what, out of how many times I played borderlands 3 the choice of what rhys asks you does not matter...the hearing the different dialogue of each character of what they say does change and some of it is actually funny with this question he asks.

Bioshock: Infinite was literally all about the illusion of choice. It was actually kind of a plot point that the main character slowly realizes he has no control over his circumstances and almost everything he does has been planned out in advance.

In Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, siding with LaCroix IS a legitimate ending and it doesn't come out of nowhere. The McGuffin of the game is the mysterious Ankaran Sarcophagus. Hinted all game to contain one of the mythical original vampires, LaCroix's plan is to open the Sarcophagus and feed from its sleeping occupant to steal their power. What neither you or LaCroix know is that there was never actually an original vampire in there, and it turns out that another vampire, Smiling Jack actually took the body of its (probably) human occupant out and replaced the insides with C4. You even get a hint about this since one of your allies in the game, the vampire scholar Beckett, actually tells you explicitly NOT to open it. And this ending goes down similarly if you fight LaCroix for the Sarcophagus too. When you go to open it, once again, you explode. And in another ending you walk away and LaCroix opens it up alone and blows up by himself.

I first played Mass Effect with the Legendary Edition, so I had some idea the ending of 3 would be rough - but I still wasn’t prepared for having my guts ripped out. I hadn’t read up on the ending choices, and instinctively chose Synthesis, which I thought was kind of beautiful in the cut scene - not what I wanted, but interesting. Went back to an earlier save and did the whole thing again from the start of The Citadel, ending with Destroy, so Shepard might live. (I mean, who makes Liara cry? A MONSTER, that’s who!) Next time, though, I’m stopping my playthrough at the end of The Citadel DLC.

In Arkham City, you at least get an audio clip playing to tell you that, in fact, Batman is not gonna be okay without your help. I've always been more steamed at the Saint's Row 4 ending; I kinda wanted to see at least a cutscene showing zinyak living up to his end, sparing your crew and them calling you a hero like in the "good" ending in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I'm glad to *finally* see a list like this include that, it's always bothered me. 😊

I would replace the BG3 one with SEVERAL choices in BG:Siege of Dragonspear, which gives you not one, but three chances to join with the 'villain' of the piece, Kailar Argent(I probably spelled that wrong, the Shining Lady). Worse, you are later given a 'vision' by a 'mysterious' old man(He's the villain from BG2), and then tricked into killing someone. Not only is this a world with resurrection magic(Which you USE during some of this series), but it's also scripted to happen no matter what, and even if you do everything right to not kill them, the game steps in and does it for you anyway. Amusingly, originally the game just checked if the character couldn't do actions to 'confirm' the kill. Paralyzing them caused events to continue with their monster form in your party for the rest of the game.

You forgot the 4th ending to mass effect 3, the one where you refuse the three choices and just watch the world burn.

People love to say the choices in the Telltale Games don't matter and yet those choices are what make YOUR PLAYTHROUGH different than someone else's. Season Two can end in one of three different locations depending on the choices you made. You definitely choose the fate of the two surviving characters at the end of that game and pretending you don't is just salty.

I bounced hard off the tell-tale walking dead games because of this exact reason. You could tell very early on that none of the choices actually changed anything of note.

Assassins creed Odyssey, "you can be a gay character." Also Odyssey, you can turn down story missions that are required to finish the game. But the characters will just sit there forever until you come back and change your mind. Also also Odyssey, non lethal options. You can only choose to use non lethal methods on unimportant npcs. Also also also Odyssey, story npc's are invincible, so the fact that you can seemingly kill anyone only really applies to unimportant npc's. Also also also also Odyssey, the devs told players that you wouldn't have to engage in the naval parts of the game unless you really want to.

The first Infamous game offered a "choice" between rescuing a love interest or a bunch of doctors. Unlike how the game unfolded prior, the "choice" by the player is immediately disastrous. 🤦 The player also cannot truly choose whether or not to develop heroic or evil powers. In order to max out either side, the player pretty much has to select all good or all evil from start to finish.

That awkward moment when WhatCulture criticizes a game they clearly didn’t even play lmao must be Tuesday cause it happens constantly. Little Hope’s characters died in a house fire. It’s literally the opening scene of the game. I don’t even know why I watch this channel anymore honestly.

Ahh, Detroit Become Human. The game that David Cage will tell you has the most unique story of all time but Marcus' storyline is literally ripped from the 90s cartoon Phantom 2040 and the rest of it is about as ununique.

Yes, the endings in Mass Effect are very lackluster but it's wrong that your choices and behavior throughout the games have no consequences. And one of the endings is not destroying the reapers but destroying all synthetic lifeforms, which includes the Geth. So you may have brought peace between Quarians and Geth but in the end basically went genocidal. And Kara can die right after the prolog along with Alice and even after that there are many situations where they can die, like when crossing the highway. And yes, Connor keeps coming back but dying often as Connor heavily influences his character development and the relation with Hank.

I think the point of the Saints Row choice was that the games expects you to turn Zenyak down because he can't be trusted. He already blew up the Earth when you tried to go back. Why would he want to revive the people that lived there?

There's an indie visual novel called How To Date A Magical Girl that ends a LOT like the #10 game on this list. Your character goes to a school for magical girls and there are five different characters you can choose to pursue romantically and there is also a series of murders going on that your character needs to solve before everyone is dead. Except . . . SPOILER!!: Your character is in a coma the entire time. Neither the school nor any of the datable characters you've invested so much time into romancing exist. The only other real character is a doctor who has orchestrated the dream murders via a chip in your brain in order to motivate you to wake up. None of the choices you made throughout the game mean anything and the only one that matters is a choice you make at the end to wake up from the coma or remove the chip so you can spend eternity in the dream. Even worse, choosing to wake up is listed as the "bad ending," so the game doesn't even want you to make a real choice at the end.

I am going to put this one out there, Bioshock infinite, I know that your choices actually do change some minor details, but they don't actually matter at all. I found the whole thing to be very insulting towards the players who liked playing Bioshock 1 and 2 to get every different ending.

You're mispronouncing "Camarilla", but it's funny because I played VtM paper and pencil for decades before it was mainstream and we always thought it was pronounced like a French word, but it isn't. It's supposed to be pronounced phonetically. Even when we found out we kept saying it, first out of habit but we discussed it and decided pronouncing the Ls sounds really stupid.
