To mark the 100th anniversary of the Poppy as a symbol of remembrance, the Guelph Pipe Band had the privilege of recording "Flowers of the Forest" at McCrae House Memorial Gardens, the birthplace of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. McCrae penned the famous poem "In Flanders Fields".
The Guelph Pipe Band proudly wears the McCrae tartan in honour of Guelph native Lt. Col. McCrae. Formed in 1922 by former members of the Perth Regiment from Scotland who served in the First World War and emigrated to Canada, today marks the 99th consecutive year the band has participated in Remembrance Day services for The City of Guelph.
Flowers of the Forest was the most common graveside lament played by pipers during the First World War. Since then, it has become the standard for pipers around the world at remembrance services. The second song is "The Bloody Fields of Flanders" by Pipe Major John McClellan DCM who wrote it while serving with the 8th Argylls during the fighting in Flanders.
We'd like to extend a special thanks to the Guelph Pipe Band for helping us commemorate this important occasion, and honour the courage, valour and sacrifice of the heroes who have served - and continue to serve - Canada during times of war and conflict.
