I LOVE how the remaining ants formed a "survival perimeter". I'm guessing they wanted to immediately form it from the get-go but they were overrun by the chaos so quickly. In nature, I think the ants would have fared even better.

The ants might be more interested in the food items if they had a queen and a colony of larvae to feed. That might be the reason why they didn't feed more aggressively.
