My cousin had two mastifs, both rescues. Sibre was an English mastiff and weighed 210lbs and thought she was a lapdog! Charlie was a Neapolitan and was ‘smaller’ at 182lbs. Unfortunately Charlie was rescued from a illegal fighting ring and was so scared and aggressive he couldn’t be around anyone safely, only my cousin and his wife and the lovely Sibre. Sadly he died 18 months after they got him of cancer but he knew love and safety for at least some of his short life.

This really goes to show that even for animals, it’s important to be empathetic and recognize their boundaries. Especially with rescues who often carry a lot of trauma with them, having a principle like “when he takes the muzzle off, the groom is over” is really important for the well-being of both the dog and the groomer. You could say the same for people a lot of the time.

I've taken in a lot of different mastiffs and mastiff crosses over the years, and helped rehab and resocialize most of them. A lot of them have pretty terrible histories, because people don't understand how stubborn they can be and feel comfortable punishing them like they were people. It's terrible. But I've also seen how quickly a mastiff with a terrible abuse history can turn around in the right environment, and he definitely looked like he's in the right environment. I'm almost positive he'll keep coming out of his shell and relaxing more, with those folks by his side.

@@krollic Passionate dog lovers sounding off. Yes it's true, How you raise your dog (just like how a raise a child) will determine their behaviour and temperament as they grow, But genetics also plays a part. You have to be careful with powerful dogs that were bred for a reason by humans, just because you raised your dog as a well trained family pet, Doesn't mean you take liberties and have full trust in them in any situation. It only takes something to trigger a bad reaction, And if you are not in control at the time then it's not going to be a good outcome. In my opinion, Some breeds should not be family pets cause they have a trigger... And it's been well documented! Nice family pet bla bla... Goes and flips and does some damage to someone or another dog or whatever.

However, it never ceases to blow my mind the difference that rehabilitators like Dwayne's new pet-parents can make? I loved seeing how happy his family was at the end! They were definitely ecstatic and noticed how shiny his coat was. You also taught him that he could survive and be well-behaved through his groom. Great job! Can't wait to see him on the channel again. What a honey.

Saw Dwayne in his muzzle and got a real Hannibal Lecter vibe! Never occurred to me until later how frightened Dwayne might have been in the situation and how the muzzle helped and protected him as much as it did you and your camera man. Great job Vanessa, Dwayne looked amazing afterward even if you had to cut the session short. His owners and you are doing a great job socializing such a beautiful example of the Neapolitan Mastiff breed!

Not to make Dwayne feel body shamed, you can see in his joints that he is having some mobility issues & due to the torso girth, he could use to lose at least 10lbs. Don't forget doggo parents that an obese pet is not a representation of how much more you love your animal versus those who maintain a healthy, breed recommended weight ❤.

I'm really happy that Dwayne is getting a loving home who know how to care for his breed since it seems that his previous owners did not do that at all. I hope that he'll find happiness, this big boy deserves all the love in the world :)

I was gonna say just looking at him he doesn't look aggressive... But he does look extremely concerned.... poor guy. I'm sure that whatever happened in his past is the reason for the outbursts of aggression, poor guy is just trying to keep himself safe. He's absolutely adorable. I hope his new family are able to help him work through some of his problems

A lot of times as a groomer, you're more at risk of being bitten by a nervous/anxious dog than almost anything else. Biting can be a fear response and depending on HOW worried the dog is can easily mean you get little to now warning before you actually get bit. I groom with my sister and it's the "nervous nitts" that we almost always take the most caution with because they can be the most unpredictable, and NONE of them WANT to bite but if they do it can honestly really mess the dog up long term. 😢 It's really awesome to see returning clients come in that get more and more comfortable over time and the ones that were able to move from having a muzzle for everything, to certain things, to being 100% muzzle free is so awesome ❤❤❤
