These video's never fail to entertain and learn me new stuff.. I don't watch TV (returned my decoder 10 years ago, still watch movies and series on Netflix and Plex, just not on TV), so these kind of channels are a real highlight in my off-time when I just want to sit back, relax and see something new

It seems that when ever I decide to build a neat little project, and have a bunch of parts in my hand, I search for code and your site always pops up. I am very thankful that you keep working on the same things that tickle my fancy! A few years back, I was building different devices that I could push music around my home via Bluetooth, toward that end I picked up a half dozen little boards that came out of some unknown music player that probably did not do well, the boards look like left overs. They are equipped with two 3 watt output amplifier chips, on-board Bluetooth receiver, and an auxiliary in port. The speaker out ports are tiny made for some tiny plug that I am sure is deigned from unavailum. I did find that miniature power plugs can be cut down to be used but the design is a pain to work with, so I have taken to soldering flat cable taken from old computer hard drive cables as speaker out. Since the stereo is taken from two mono amps, I do like to keep the two grounds separate as they are in the output for the speakers. I want to use this in the aux mode to receive the input from the ESP32 if I can. Hope this can be made, the board is very small I am considering making it a mono and putting it all in a tiny pocket AM radio case, designing a dial that can change stations using a rotary encoder, if possible.

Seeing all your project boxes makes me realize what a wealth of experience you have. While I also envy you upon comparison with my own, smaller but growing set. Thank you for inspiring us. Cheers!

Andreas, this is definitely one of your best videos so far as you also show how you managed to solve the display issue! Troubleshooting is frustrating, but it turns out to be one of the best ways to learn. You said that this project, which I have not looked into the details, uses mostly all the features of the ESP32: what about bluetooth? This is the one project that still has me building and modifying this project. I simply have fallen in love with the concept. I am now building them and feeding the output into other types of gear, such as the replica of an old radio my mother purchased 30 years ago. I got it when we cleaned out her house to sell it, and after recaping the radio, have it working like new. I have fed it via an FM radio transmitter from an MP3 player for Christmas music last year, now I have added a plug so I can push WIFI radio through the set. I have my ESP programmed by year for this one, so I can go from 1920 forward to 1970 for music, including one link to AFVN the old music I listened to in Vietnam. I have set it up to use an old remote that used to control a VHS recorder many years ago. Oh I wanted to thank all who said prayers for my wonderful wife, she passed away from the Cancer in September, the pain of the loss is still very real, I hope one day it will pass, but after 51 years of togetherness, it may well take a bit.

My Dad (84) is getting senile, can now only operate very simple devices, and lives in an area with bad FM/DAB reception - but loves classical music and mentally depends on it. All the receivers, mp3 players, SAT receivers, etc. I've tried so far are too complicated for him to use. He needs something without any auto-poweroff, no menus, no battery, no small display, with headphones, and ideally which will just keep/resume playing no matter what happens (resume automatically after power outage, internet outage, etc.) and has very clearly labelled and large buttons/knobs which he can operate with shaky fingers/hands. Even for 200€ I havent been able to find something easy and reliable enough. Finally I had the idea of a homemade ESP32 webradio, found the mentioned github project on, and thankfully this review was linked there. So now I will try building this project (at first just with one hardcoded station and no buttons/display) and might later add a rotary encoder and display. Thanks for this review!!

Interesting and entertaining project. I started too with ESP8266 and VS1053, but that was an awful solution - unstable, crashed all the time and VS1053 had issues with grounding (or ground coupling) (noise in speakers), when I installed this whole thing in my spare pc speaker cabinet. I threw it all out and got OrangePi with cheapest PCM5102 DAC and got internet radio that plays ALL formats of stations (even Opus that sounds ok even in 48kbps). It was pretty hard to debug that ESP8266 setup, as I am not "embedded device" guy - too little free time.

Just an update, I have it all together and working now! Even the rotary encoder, I am using the small OLED screen which is torture for my aging eyes but it's either that or the 1602 which I also had working, in fact I got that working first. The secret to my total success? I read the damn MANUAL! Funny how that works, and it's the last place I usually go. Seems I am not as smart as I thought. Now that I have it working I have written down all my pins and where they connect. I made my own board with the rotary encoder on it, I think I may stick a IR receiver on it as well but I will wait till I get out to my woodworking shop and build the case for the radio first, I may well just leave it the way it is. Running it from my laptop, or cell phone is simple enough without having to search for my remote. I have programmed up to 50 radio stations in her now and saved a backup of that setup just in case.

Another great video of a nice project indeed. (The Swiss music made me smile. At least you didn't Rick-roll us!) To debug the white screen I would probably have pulled out the logic analyzer in addition to the print statement, to see the command that was send to the display and to check the other lines. Looking at the issue history I'm not sure if that would have saved debugging time...

Greetings and salutations from the snowy plains of South Dakota. All the cool weather of the Alps but without the Mountains! I have been playing around with several versions of this project for a few days now. I am sick with the flu, in fact got back from the Doctor yesterday. She checked me over and told me I was getting over my pneumonia nicely. Didn't even know I had that. Anyhow, I managed to get, first an ESP8266 to sort of work, but very poor quality sound. The more power I fed her the better, but nowhere near the quality I was seeking. Then I hooked this one up for the, well perhaps 40't attempt, and music came from my tiny folding speakers. It works, so far. All I have set up is the ESP and the sound board, I did make a small PC board for a rotary encoder but have not yet wired that in. I have been just getting by using the onscreen setup to change stations and other settings. I do have several types of screens but haven't decided which one to go with so far. Thanks so much for your fine video's, had I the funds, I would send some your way, but sadly my funds are quickly going the way of the dodo bird. Know anyone interested in a fine little 2 bedroom ranch style home in South Dakota? Trying to sell mom's, she is in the home and shall never walk out on her own, sadly, and that damn house, fine home that it is, sits, mocking me as people drive by and seen the sign but make no offers. Ah well back to playing with ESP's and arduino's.

I now have 3 of these working. 2 using the VS1053 and one using I2S on a different board all working off ESP32's. I did find an interesting thing however. I had been powering them using a USB cable hooked to the ESP32 and experienced a LOT of noise if I had both the amplifier and the boards running on the same power supply. One day I was messing around and ran the power instead to the power in and all the noise was gone, good pure sound. That said, however my amplifier goes into a very slow oscillation if I turn up the volume to a comfortable level. I am planning on going from the tiny 5 volt amp to a larger one that runs off 12 volts DC. Right now I run the whole system off 3 18650 batteries that I channel through a home built voltage regulator using 7805 and several capacitors, so I believe I should be able to pull the 12 volts from the power supply before it goes into the 5 volt step down regulator. I used a bit larger caps then recommended to insure quiet in the PS and it seems to work just fine with 470 UF caps. The one that I built using the I2S board I built on a strip board so all connections are good and solid, however right now I am using a demo sketch that only allows 1 station which is OK I guess since I always seem to listen to my Armed Forces Vietnam WIFI station, made by the former DJ'S who played the rock and roll that we had for a background in our little war over there. Sure brings back the memories I can tell you that. The 2 that I have using the VS chip I made permanent by soldering all my connections, those damn plugs kept coming unplugged. What I did was to use old ribbon cables from scsi drives and soldered from the top of the ESP32's to the bottom of the VS board. This left all the plugs available if I ever need them yet made for a very solid and strong connection between boards. Those old scsi cables must be able to handle a lot of juice I know they solder great, of course I always use extra FLUX in my soldering to insure a good connection. The first set I built is in a small plastic project box using a small OLED screen, with that one I have an external power-supply and external amplifier so it is rather portable. The second one is in a larger cardboard type box using a 16X2 screen with I2C adapter for screen. That's the one with the tiny amplifier that doesn't really work very well. When ever I locate my 12 volt amps that should be repaired, however with 2 young grandsons running through my house and all the company that came for my wife's funeral everything is sort in a shambles. My daughter has stayed on to clean house and cook for me so the house is slowly getting back to somewhat of an order. You know I can't get over how damn much I miss my wonderful wife!

Greetings from the frozen state of South Dakota, where Spring just will not chase the winter snows away this year! I built one sort of like this however using an Arduino as a controller. Mounted it inside an old speaker and used it for our motor home radio. My intention was to use our satellite radio system with it, however in our hurry to head South the Satellite radio was left behind, so the radio only served for local FM down in Arizona. While it served us fairly well over Christmas for our Holiday background, I quickly tired of the amplifier systems I used it in because there were just to damn many buttons to set things, and the quality of the sound just was not there. It is slatted for a tear down when ever the damn snow melts and I can get to the rig without tracking mud and snow in the motor home. Perhaps I will try this setup, with the increased speed of the ESP it may well run better, who knows.

Andreas, nice you got this project running. I also built this thing, my own way, very basic, with ring-buffer and works like a charm. Now I would like to use the second core of the ESP (someone made a nice tutorial 'bout that..) to process meta-data. And that's where I got stuck. Ideas?

Great and educational video ! Btw, I notice that the sound of exitement of a Swiss is quite similar to that of a Belgian. However, there is a suttle/dicrete difference if compared with the French or Flemish part of the country.

Thanks for this nice Project! Once upon a time in the early 2000th there was an internet radio station "Bach-Radio" produced by Otto. I received it using my first and retired laptop. A car FM transmitter distribited it to normal FM radios in the whole flat. car FM Transmitters are (or were) legally in Germany. Later I switched to my first synology using a USB sound card, the car FM-transmitter etc. This also had a RF remote and worked fine. Then an "Ayildiliz-Team" hacked Bach Radio and Otto discontinued his channel and moved to 1.fm. Nowadays mostly I am using my smartphone. Axon 7 has good speakers. Good enough for my old ears. An internet hearing test let me face reality and saved a lot of money to me. But most German Radio stations are no more worth hearing. Apropos American presidents: I would like to recommend the autobiography of Herbert Hoover. A very poor orphan boy was adopted by Quakers, became a mining engineer, was involved in the supply chain of WW I, got part of US administration and finally became 31th president in a bad time.

I'm considering making a custom PCB for this project, the only real problem is reproducing the VS1053 board, but there seems to be a nice schematic in the datasheet (the chinese boards usually just replicate that basic schematic). Would be cool to have it all on one board wouldn't it? I've made a few MQTT based home automations for my friends and this would be a cool addition to the dashboard.

I'll be very interested to see how you get on coupling the VS1053 to that little PAM8403 class d amp. I'm working on a VS1053 and arduino nano based drum machine and I find I can only get it to work properly into the amp if I run them from separate power supplies. The basic problem is that the common terminal on the headphone socket is not at zero volts so needs decoupling in some way. I've tried a few sugested circuits including the one in the data sheet but it's extremely unstable when fed from a single supply. So I've ordered 2 audio transformers to see if I can get it working that way. Possibly I need to try a better power supply. So I'll be very interested to see how it goes for you.

Very interesting little proj. Working out where borders of ESP32 are..... Basically it can decode IP Audio streams (Mp3, AAC etc.) itself in SW. What are your feelings to delete the external VS1053 decoder and decode stream audio in the ESP32, still paired with with tasks touch evaluation, SPI TFT bandwidth load and potentially even equalizer number crunching from the ESP Audio developing framework? External RAM might be needed here, but basically this shoudln't be an issue...

I have to deal with it again because reading the subtitles (I do not know English as well as I would like) I lose some passages but I will get there. Do not worry about your writing, even I am left-handed but forced to write with the right hand from the nuns of my school: in those days (1966) the left was the devil's hand, I still remember the nun's screams that bound me left arm behind his back and he realized that I was left-handed only because my mother told him during the quarterly interviews. Now I am ambidextrous for almost everything, but my writing is horrible with the right and almost impossible with the left. In all cases we have made a satisfying life.

Hi Andreas! I remember encoutering a similar problem (white lcd) when working on an intelligent alarm clock project a few months ago. I used a touchscreen, and when I pressed some menu items, the screen just turned white. Turned out to be an issue in my code, because the pins of the touchscreen, which send a signal to the arduino when the screen is pressed, are shared with the LCD pins. In my case, when calling a method to get the touch points on the Screen, the library was setting the shared pins to INPUT mode. After that, I needed to set the specific pins to OUTPUT mode again, otherwise the screen turned white. Don't know if this helps in your case because you're not using a touchscreen. Greetings Henrik

Hello again! Yes, you were right it can not work under Arduino. So I compiled it with PlatformIO. I have the same WHITE DISPLAY problem. I fixed by adding big capacitor to the 5V and GND on the VS1003 Board! However I have very bad interrupted sound coming out. Its like 1 sec there is sound, 5 seconds there is no sound. I am using VS1003 instead of VS1053 IC. The sketch correctly detects it as VS1003 and initializes it properly. What could be the problem? Do you succeed to find the problem?

How would I go about using the esp32 as a simple wifi antenna for my laptop? for example if my wifi card inside was to fail, could I use the esp32 to connect and surf?
