I've been topping off a leaky tire for weeks and staring at my garden hose wondering if I could use it instead of my compressor. The answer is YES!!!
The goal of course was to make a video demonstrating a clever use of physics to solve a common problem in a creative way. In no way do I actually recommend this as a practical solution! At some point I will create a video explaining the calculations and post it on my 2nd channel, BUILD2. When I do I'll put the link here.
Please consider helping fund the channel by becoming part of my "Quint-essential" support on Patreon:
/ quintbuilds
I only do per-creation subscriptions and recommend setting a monthly limit in case I upload more than once in a month (which will be rare). I want to have the option of taking a month off and not keep taking your money just because another month has passed!
Thanks for watching...

Technically that’s how a normal compressor works, instead of water level rising in a fixed volume it’s just a piston rising, and instead of having a guy open a butterfly valve every time the bottles are filled, a valve opens every time the piston reaches its highest point and the air escapes that way. Its a good way to demonstrate this though

Needless to say that By the time you used all energy and resources to inflate the tire, the tire pump manually could have inflated the tire in 1/4 the effort and time than with the water solution. This is a great tool to teach air, water and volume displacement to students. All in all, it's a good video.

When I first saw the board with the 10 bottles attached to it, I was half laughing, half saying 'wow' really loud. This was sooo impressive, and I loved when you drew the circles around the tire describing how to estimate how much air that was needed. You really outdid yourself on this one. GREAT JOB!!!!

Thank you SOOO much Lynn!!! I had SO many blunders making the first couple blocks I almost didn't have the courage to continue. So many broken tools! I thought I might do one long chain of 30+ bottles but multiples of 10 proved challenging enough! I put WAY more effort into documenting scenes and script ahead of time and felt like it made a difference at every step.

Add the quadzillions of water he wasted for his rain turbine and you'd have been cheaper off by just paying for the electricity you were trying to save in the first place ;-)

In Aviation, if it's stupid and it worked, it is still stupid and you were just lucky. Aviation has very precise definitions of "stupid".

My dad is a retired 73 year old engineer. Very smart & clever guy. He has many unfinished major projects, some of which have been left unfinished for 45+ years, but he will spend days or sometimes weeks coming up with a clever/intricate way to make one specific task only slightly more efficient. In other words, he’ll spend a large amount of time & work to improve random little things, & the comfort/quality-of-life in his workshop, yet his main project car that was taken apart in 1982 is still in pieces... It’s really cool to see some of the stuff that he comes up with, though. Smarter not harder, I suppose.
