I wondered the same. Glasses are needed MORE there, aren't they? I was on the path 7 years ago. We wore ours the whole time. When it got dark I took them off and looked around. You are fine as long as you don't stare at the sun. If staring at the son you need polarized sunglasses.

I asked the same question… And I think it would be safer to wear them lol… It also says if you read the fine print on those little cardboard glasses that they are only good for three minutes of continuous use… So it might be a good idea to have an extra pair

You absolutely have to wear glasses in the path up totality. This is the worst case of misinformation that can cause irreversible harm.

@@angelam.davilajd6658 You should wear sunglasses because it is bright out. In order to look at the Eclipse you need polarized sunglasses. Good sunglasses today are usually polarized. I used polarized sunglasses 7 years ago. In order to see how dark the total dark was I took the glasses off. As long as one is not looking directly at the sun you are fine. I didn't go blind!

@@kskip4242 you fire a laser at the moon from earth and it strikes these mirrors the original Apollo missions left behind, which then bounces back and you use the time it takes light to travel to and back, then you can calculate distance traveled. You take into account the air in the atmosphere, but luckily for us space is a vacuum which makes that portion easier to take into account. Aside from that if you can determine the size of the moon, and then looking at the light from the sun and how and when it strikes the moon, it’s position and appearance from earth, you can actually calculate distances. The ancient were able to calculate eclipses and when they’d occur 100’s of years into the future by looking up at the sky and mathematically pinpointing where the moons was as it travelled across the night sky. It’s wild to think at our point in time, we can’t at the very least determine distance and size using all the instruments we seem to have at our disposal. Unfortunately this will all seem like none sense to you because you’ve already convinced yourself of something. No we don’t have a super long measuring tape, but we’ve learned certain fundamentals of nature and laws that allow us to paint, that be it blurred, idea of how things work or are.

@@davidbowen169 Actually only Earth moves in relation to the Sun, and the Moon moves in relation to Earth, while Sun doesn't move at all. The reason why Moon appears to move from East to West is because Earth is spinning from West to East, but in reality, the Moon is actually orbiting around Earth from West to East, and therefore path of eclipse moves in the same direction.

Yea!!! The question literally just smacked me in the face all of a sudden!! And I've seen this 100s of times bc I've been waiting my whole life to see the totality !!! And after last year and not being able to, I found out that 7 years later..... My house is dead in the path!!! Been anxiously excited this entire time!!!!! And I never realized! I've always been fascinated by the sky!!! And God's Word tells is that His signs are in the sun, moon, and stars!! I NEED to know the answer to this!! I won't stop till I figure it out! It's pretty simple actually. This is the point where the 2 paths INTERSECT and form the eclipse. It has no bearing on the fact that the sun rises in the east.

It's the moon that is it passes from east to west will also create an east to west shadow

Nothing is wrong here, this is not movement of the Sun, but movement of the Moon which orbits in the same direction as Earth rotates.

Earth rotates counter clockwise so that’s why the sun appears to rise in the east. The moon also revolves around the earth in the same direction, hence why you see the moon’s shadow moving eastward on the map here

The moon actually orbits the earth from west to east, completing a full rotation once month but since the earth rotates from west to east, completing a full rotation every 24 hours, everything in our sky appears to rise in the east and set in the west. During a total solar eclipse the path of the sun doesn’t affect the path of the moons shadow, the moon’s movement obviously does… and the west to east orbit becomes far more noticeable as the moon passes between the sun and our position on the earth. Causing a southwest to northeast path of totality. The moons shadow moves at about roughly 1000 miles per hour on the earth so don’t be late if you plan on watching. Totality probably won’t last more than a few minutes wherever you are. Hope this helped!
