A 6 footer on fire 80 feet up was my largest. I ended up with the 5 wedges I had with me and a bunch of birch ones cut close by. A 61 Husky with a 28 inch bar did the deed. 40 years ago I still have that saw. Thanks for this post of memories my friend. Big cedar can sure make for an interesting day eh.

Always enjoy watching you deal with some real challenges. A quick foot hold I'll use is just punch a hole in the stump and stick my wedge in it. Tipped at a bit of an angle. The trick I'd like to see is putting those 3 strips of flagging up :) Why not paint? Be safe!!

Funny thing about the wedges ... in Toba Inlet 1972 at the Weldwood camp, one of the fallers had the misfortune of the tree rocking back hard on his wedge stack, spitting out out a wedge like a hockey puck slap shot into his face.....poor fella lost some teeth that day along with some blood...so yes kids its a real thing and Bjarne has the fix.

This is sickening destruction of old growth forest and wildlife habitat. They should return to building cast iron buildings and steel frame houses.
@dws5951
@dws5951 2 місяці тому
DUHHH cast iron was a structural component in early "hi rise" structures, ocean going ships etc..steel structural materials..same story, utilized in the sky scraper era, to this day along with engineered concrete matrixes.....wood is an easily "on site" modified/shaped construction material for residential housing ... cutting live timber for process to building materials is a far better use than leaving trees to peak maturity followed by inevitable rot and collapse ...so stop your tree hugging mentality and understand the cycles that forests go through ..from complete devastation (mount St Helens style) to vibrant new growth..be patient as nature works thro' the regrowth process.

The undercut was a little too small, that’s why we had to jack so much. It wasn’t about needing a longer bar. On a big tree like this it’s actually uncommon to have your cuts match perfectly, there’s usually some cleaning out of the undercut after you’ve knocked the big pieces out. 🤙
