In this video I compare the "old" Neo-6M with the new Neo-M8N module. I am interested especially in altitude precision, but compare also horizontal precision.
Both modules are compared with the precision of a pressure sensor BME280 in measuring exact relative altitude.
I also show how to change the Arduino TinyGPSplus library that it works with the Neo-M8N module.

Note that it takes 11-13 minutes for the sats to download the almanac and ephemeris files (in a clear line of sight to the sats) to the GPS receivers (these files are the data resourced by the rcvrs for their "hot start" function to avoid sat search time). These files expire every 9 days and new ones are released to the sats for download every Monday.

Ephemeris data takes 30 seconds to download and is all you need for a GPS fix though. Almanac was useful for the early GPS receivers that had low sensitivity and needed help knowing where to look for the satellites using an approximate solution, now not so much, if at all ;-)

For anyone who's trying to use NEO-8 for more than GPS and GLONASS satellites, you'll have to enable it at 'GNSS config' AND change the NMEA protocol to version 4.10. As soon as you set it, you'll be able to receive Beidou and Galileo satellites. But you can only set 3 GNSS services at a time(for neo-8), and to change between then you must leave only 2 services, save it, and only then enable the third you'd like. And I have also found much better reception if you desolder the SMA connector if you're not gonna use it. If you're looking foward to use an active sma antenna, then you must desolder the C2 capacitor. This only applies to the M8 boards with soldered ceramic antenna

Good comparison, thank you! I have been wondering if to replace the NEO-6 with 8 in my DJI Phantom 1. There are wired modules available for such a low price, that it would be nice to try. But I also know how GPS works, thanks to years of MTB/cross-country biking, recording every ride. It just is not 100% reliable. What is interesting, is that the best weather for GPS has been very humid or even rainy weather. The worst is dry and clear with moderate winds. It must have something to do with the conditions far above the ground (several kilometers), but on the average I had one or two days in a year when unassisted GPS, even sensitive one, did not get fix. Tried everything I can, power off the GPS (Holux GPSlim 236), leave it on the ground still for minutes, smash it on the ground throwing the battery away etc. It normally gets fix in half a minute as expected, but in that dry weather it only got fix after riding for like 2 kilometers. That is just random. I really hate those days :D
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 7 років тому
Strange behavior... Not as expected. The only GPS I use regularly is the one in my car. And it never happened, that I did not get a fix after a while. So, it must be something with your GPS module. The difference of the -6 and the -8 is, that the -8 sees also the Russian satellites which can help in difficult situations.
@SamiJumppanen
@SamiJumppanen 7 років тому
Andreas Spiess there's nothing wrong with the GPS, it's sensitive and very consistent, SirfStar III. Just a certain weather situation does that, rarely. I used it for years, twice a day, so I have comprehensive experience. The same could happen on my phone's gps on the same day.

I recently read that these modules can be programmed with the u-Center software to output a GPS-stabilized frequency between 0,25 and 24 MHz instead of the usual pulse per second (PPS), so that they can be used as a cheap but stable frequency normal. Some modules have a pin to output the PPS-signal, some must be modified to pick up the signal from the input of the pulse-LED. It outputs a square wave of the desired frequency (and Duty cycle), set via u-center. If you find that useful or at least interesting, please make a video on that. Thanks for your excellent work. 73!
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 2 роки тому
Yes, they can be programmed as you describe. Unfortunately, the output has phase jitter and cannot be used directly for RF applications. This is why people build GPSDOs which use a stable OCXO/TCXO and correct it long term with the signal you described. 73 de HB9BLA

Hi Andreas, thanks a lot for good explanation of GPS modules. I would like to know , if you have the info obviously, what can I do with my LEA-6H-0-002 gps module. What I would like to do is: - run it to calculate position at 10Hz instead of 5Hz ( it seems it's not possible with it!! ) - when you speak about profile (Navigation Modes) what really happen in the module? What does it mean? My application is gps module mounted on a Quadcopter to perform RTH, Position Hold and so on. I'm using UBX protocol. Do you suggest to buy another more performing module? - Is it possible to flash new firmware in the LEA-6H-0-002 ? I raise the question to u-blox company without success.... Thanks in advance if you can help me on this. Regards Fiorenzo
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 8 років тому
+Fiorenzo Giust I never looked into update rates. So, I have to guess: Neo-6 offer max 5 Hz update rate. Neo-8 with GPS satellites only 10Hz. But there are many other possible bottlenecks: 1. Connection controller to GPS module: If you use Serial connection: Serial is very slow (usually 9600) The chips should be able to use higher speeds, however you have to change it in setup. If your board offers I2c or SPI pins you could also use these interfaces. Then, transmission speed should not be an issue anymore. 2. I do not know which MCU you use, but this could also be the bottleneck. The MCU on my self balancing robot at least is quite busy stabilizing hte whole thing. 3. Another question is: How far can your quad move in 0.1 sec? If it is less than the precision of the GPS you might not get much more information. The ublox chips are very much configurable. with their u-center software. You can download it free from their homepage. This software also offers a possibility for Firmware update if the company offers one. ublox does only sell their products in very large quantities, so I can imagine they have no customer support for end-useres as we are. Hope, this helps a bit...

BeiDou will not work in Europe (according to wiki): "Unlike the American GPS, Russian GLONASS, and European Galileo systems, which use medium Earth orbit satellites, BeiDou-1 uses satellites in geostationary orbit. This means that the system does not require a large constellation of satellites, but it also limits the coverage to areas on Earth where the satellites are visible.[11] The area that can be serviced is from longitude 70°E to 140°E and from latitude 5°N to 55°N. A frequency of the system is 2491.75 MHz."

That sounds like a really poor choice of frequencies and trying to filter out all the trash just below it on the 2400 MHz ISM band (Wifi, Bluetooth, microwave ovens etc.) I remember back in 2011 President Obama was going to open up a band for LightSquared for a cellphone band and then had to nix the idea because of potential interference to GPS.

@breedj1
@breedj1 7 років тому
The accuracy of a GPS system highly depends on the amount of satellites received and the position of those satellites. For example. If you place the GPS antenna between some buildings and you have a narrow field of view (do not see much sky) the receiver will receive less satellites and the satellites which are received are all around the same position. That means that triangulation will have a big error. Height measuring with a gps will always have a lot of error. The best is to average the height over a long time and calibrate a pressure sensor with it. The pressure sensor will have good short term measurements but bad long term measurements. If the air pressure changes the reading will change a lot. So for the best system you will need both gps and air pressure. That is commonly used in drones for height measurement. You can get a measure of accuracy for the GPS by looking at the HDOP, VDOP, PDOP and TDOP (Dilution of Precision) measurements which are in the EMEA string you get from the receiver. The higher those values the less accurate the readings are. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilution_of_precision_(navigation)

@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 6 років тому

@BertNederland
@BertNederland 6 років тому
Some quick checks to see if it is a genuine U-blox: -Try to store settings from u-center. Try to change settings to power save mode as explained in a Ublox document (search for PowerManagement_AppNote_(UBX-13005162).pdf ). Go to the step by step guide in Chapter 3.1.1. Power save mode only work if you can disable Glonass. When you are done, disconnect from power supply and reconnect again. Now check if it is still on power save mode (and if Glonass is still disabled). Those counterfeit models usually have limited Flash memory so they immediately revert to 1 Hz full power. -The next check would be to try to update to firmware V3.01. To do so, download this firmware from ublox and use u-center to upgrade (you have to select 2 files, the file you just downloaded and a second file that is on your hard disk in the windows ublox program directory. If it is a counterfeit model u-center will show a red screen with a message such as "no Flash detected"or "Flash timed out". -Another thing to check is the GNSS system configuration page (in u-center). It probably shows just 32 channels available (the real Neo M8N is capable of receiving up to 72 channels).

Hi Can u tell me is it possible to improve my accuracy by using 2 GPS module NEO - 6 M (comparing information)? I mean in Arduino or create app in Delphi XE8 or C#, or any other methodes?
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 8 років тому
I am not an expert in GPS, so I cannot answer this question. There is a technology using 2 GPS modules and fix one to a particular place. Because you know exactly, where this module is, you can calculate the measuring error. And this difference is then transported to the mobile GPS to enhance quality. There is a link to this principle down in the comments of one of the viewers.

GPS module with RTK tec will be better. About 0.1m CEP if I remember right. But it require static position. If the receiver is moving, then the accuracy will be bad.

I found this video useful and interesting, especially the discussion of the different NMEA strings output by the NEO-6 and NEO-8 receivers. However, I would like to offer what I hope will be taken as constructive criticism. I would suggest that instead of using the word "precision" to characterize the results, that "stability" or "repeatability" be used instead. In my view, precision is synonymous with resolution: if the device can measure a distance to a resolution of 1 cm, it's more precise than a device that can only measure distance to a resolution of 1 m. If one knows the correct value of a parameter, such as horizontal position in terms of latitude and longitude or elevation/altitude in terms of meters, a device that measures the same parameter with a constant offset of 1 m is more accurate than one that measures the parameter with a constant offset of 10 m. If a device consistently reports the value of a measurement with a variation of only 10 cm over an interval, its measurement is more repeatable than one that reports the value of a measurement with a variation of 50 cm over the same interval. In this video, I got the impression that what was being discussed was repeatability, not accuracy or precision. While the BMP280 may be more stable (its measurements more repeatable) over a measurement interval of, for example, 10 minutes, the elevation data it produces may be less accurate than the GPS elevation data if the atmospheric pressure is not the standard 1013.25 HPa (or 29.92 in. of Hg). One can attempt to correct the BMP280 elevation data using the altimeter setting measurements reported by a local airport. (Google "METAR"). I would also comment that if one does not make measurements of GPS (or GNSS) receivers using actual satellite signals (instead of simulated signals in a laboratory environment) at the same time and place, one is not really doing an apples-to-apples comparison, because the satellites that are in MEO orbit are constantly moving across the sky, and different satellite signals may be blocked either by an obstruction or because the satellites are below the horizon at different times. Well, that's enough (you'll probably say MORE than enough) pedantry for one comment.
@chipflaming

Oops, I see you used the BME280 instead of the BMP280, but the principles are the same.

One more comment, about high-resolution pressure sensors: I have tested a BMP180 inside my home on a windy day with all of the doors and windows closed, and observed a lot of short-term fluctuations of the measured pressure. But if I operate the pressure sensor in a sealed jar, the short-term fluctuations almost disappear. I used a Microduino setup consisting of the Microduino Core+, Motion, SD, and USBTTL modules for this purpose, powered via a short USB cable connected to an Anker PowerCore power bank on one end and the USBTTL module on the other end, so the entire setup fit inside a 16 oz. canning jar. My Microduino setup recorded the data to a .csv file on a microSD card, which I then imported into an Excel file on my laptop. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the BMP180/280 device measurements fluctuate on a calm day in the presence of loud music with a lot of bass.

You are right with your definitions. My project at this time was a bicycle power meter and all values needed were relative. I also have no idea on how to measure the absolute precision of a GPS device because I have no reference and I am no geographer with the needed knowledge. To adjust a pressure sensor is easy, even if you do not read the METAR. You just measure the current pressure and adjust it to your current level. Or, as I usually do, to zero. Then I get the height difference very precisely. METAR is important because pilots have no reference if they fly in the air from a different region. Therefore they need the absolute pressure on the ground. If you stay on the ground, your pressure sensor should read the "METAR" value.

Hoi Andreas, a nice comparison, but unfortunately you forgot to include one most important parameter for GPS precision, the DOP (dilution of precision). The DOP is a measurement of the current arrangement (or distribution) of the satellites on the sky. Similar to the issue in triangulation, the further the satellites are apart from each other, the better (or more precise) the reading. In short, it's not just the NUMBER of satellites that helps for the precision (horizontal and equally vertical) but also how far apart they are from each other. 9 satellites more or less in the same direction from the GPS unit may result in worse precision (and more variation in the reading) than e.g. 5 satellites distributed over the whole firmament.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 7 років тому
Pascal Fust You are right. I did not mention the DOP because I did not know its name. At 4:50 I mentioned, that the time gave the bigger differences than the devices. I assume, that the right word would have been DOP. But both somehow correlate, I assume. BTW: Do the sensors know this parameter? Otherwise, how could we use it?
@pascalfust1035
@pascalfust1035 7 років тому
Yes, you're right, depending of the time in the day, the DOP changes. The sensor does actually get this data (horizontal and vertical DOP) from the satellites and you can also find them displayed in the Ublox center, as the user manual states.

correct me if I'm wrong BUT you are only comparing the precision of each component's data stream and NOT the accuracy of each device. What I think you need to do is to check your precise location with respect to a known government geo survey point AND then compare the sensor data to that. For example I've previously in Australia looked as the position of a known official survey point with what Google Earth shows & GE is out with comparison to the official survey point.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 8 років тому
+Ray Bright Yes, you are right. I only compare one part of precision. For my application, I am not interested in absolute precision compared with other maps. I only want to use it for my bycicle computer. Still my tests are relevant also for your application, because the relative errors measured in my test add up to the errors compared with an absolute map. I think also, it would be extremely complicated to make your comparison, because you are never sure if the error comes from the GPS or from the map. And here I definitively have no know-how as an engineer. I think, this is stuff for geometers ;-)
