Keeping promises is very important. So let’s check if the suppliers of our newer LoRa boards keep their promises. The first ESP32 boards were disappointing as I showed in video #182.
In today’s contest are:
- TTGO LoRa32 board Version 2.0
- TTGO LoRa32 board Version 2.1
- TTGO LoRa32 T-beam board
- LoRa32u4 II
I will measure the maximal output power and assume, that the receiving channel behaves similarly to the transmitting circuit. Not really true, but good for an approximation.

Thanks andreas for keeping such a high quality content !! I learn so much thanks to your good advises :) Could you add current consumption for those boards like you did for the others in previous video ? :)

You are welcome! For the moment I do not plan it. These measurements are very time-consuming. In this video, the focus was on LoRa, not on the whole board.

Hi Andreas, I compared a Heltec esp32 board to a TTGO GPS esp32 board. I also used a HackRF SDR to compare the RF power. I can say that by far the Heltec boards output the most RF power despite the same bandwidth settings and Lora spread-factor and distance . I realize my testing is not professional as yours, since you used a spectrum analyzer, but I just thought you’d find it interesting. Thanks for the fascinating videos and the great education you provide !!
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
I do not know which boards you compared. There are other ways of comparing output power. You do not need a Spectrum Analyzer. But everything else (also the antennas and its position) have to be completely the same (to the millimeter).

I like the maker lab video. Been working on electronics for years. But dont have much of a maker setup at home. I've started alot of projects but never quite finished them. The last were home made cnc machines. It was fun an interesting to figure it out as it progresses. But i stop alot of times past a certain point. But i like the idea of project boxes. To keep projects around till for a another day.

For better antenna results I can recommend the ECOFLEX15 coax cable (5.8dB loss per 100m) and use the appropiate adapters. You can defenately optimize the results. If you need a sample of a few meters let me know. I'll send it over (open cable ends).

Yes the diameter is not that small. However, there are all kinds of adapters that you can use even to downsize to the smallest sizes like for the LoRa boards. The reason that these boards don't harness the max output power may be due to the fact that they didn't understand that semtech requires them to route a secondary rf output path for higher power output. This is different to lower power rf output in the semtech sx1276 chip.
@wirelessdatagroup3418
@wirelessdatagroup3418 5 років тому
true. I also feel this way. I also found out that there are two output pins in the SX1276 for the RX output. One for the Low power o/p and another for the higher power transmissions. Have these manufacturers utilised both outputs Andreas? Thanks.

I've got a few of the Lora32U4 II - boards and I'm reasonably satisfied with them. Alas, the MCU on them is pretty limited by today's standards, so I've ordered some STM32 - based boards from the same French manufacturer to play with, as the STM32 MCUs are much, much more capable.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 років тому
You are right. The question is how you program these chips (toolchain, libraries)
@WereCatf
@WereCatf 5 років тому
The STM32F103C8T6 is well supported by Roger Clark Melbourne's STM32Duino ( github.com/rogerclarkmelbourne/Arduino_STM32 ), so I don't see any good reason why Sandeep Mistry's LoRa-library ( github.com/sandeepmistry/arduino-LoRa ) wouldn't work with it. I'll at least give it a try and if it doesn't, I'll fix it and send him a patch for it. The OLED-display works fine with the STM32Duino, I've got a couple of them and I have used them with STM32. This is to say, it should work just fine with the Arduino IDE, as long as one understands how to set up STM32Duino from github. Personally, though, I am not planning to stick to STM32Duino; I'll use STM's official STM32CubeMX and Eclipse in the long run and port Sandeep's library over to it. STM32Duino isn't quite as good for low-power operation, so that's my reason for going with STM32CubeMX + Eclipse. (If there's someone here reading this comment who'd like to use STM's official tools and libraries for the STM32 MCUs, leanpub.com/mastering-stm32 is a very good book for learning the stuff. It's not quite as easy to do quick projects with it as it is with the Arduino-environment, but on the other hand, you get a lot more capabilities and better control over the MCU.)

Hi Andreas, I have a software fix for the LoRa boards so that you can get the full power out of them. Assuming you are using the same LoRa library I am (The one by Sandeep Mistry in the Arduino Library Manager) the setTxPower() function is not fully/properly implemented in that library and as a result limits the maximum output power. I created a new file and submitted a pull request on your Github page, if you overwrite your existing LoRa.cpp file with the one I submitted you should now be able to get full power out of them. I hope t works and you can make an updated video, thanks for all the great content you put out by the way, we do a lot with LoRa where I work and your videos have been helpful!
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 років тому
It is now merged. So I pulled the actual library and will test it next week. Thanks for the hint!
@morgulbrut

Actually the legal maximum TX power for 868 MHz is +14dBm according to ETSI.
@natewelch6490
@natewelch6490 5 років тому
It is ok to test a device at higher power into a test instrument. The SX127x chips are rated for a maximum output of +20dBm, I believe Andreas was just testing to see if the RF matching on the PCB was done correctly so as to let the device put out the full power. Also in North America, Australia, and India power levels up to +30dBm are allowed.
@morgulbrut
@morgulbrut 5 років тому
I know that, was just mentioning it, because if you use a proper designed stack, the designer of the stack may take care of those limitiation. What I also heard, from guys who used to work pretty close with Semtech, the SX1272 for example is rated for a maximum output power of +20dBm, it also delivers it...But those +20dBm is basically marketing fuzz, which means those +20dBm are possible, but may damage the chip over time. (Basically what absolute maximum rating means)
@natewelch6490
@natewelch6490 5 років тому
The main thing with the +20dBm setting is that you make sure your antenna is tuned properly, I believe they specify an SWR below 2.1, the supply voltage also has to be above a certain level to get the full power, I think it has to be above 3 volts.

Hi Andreas, you have often mentioned that you cannot expect miracles in terms of speed and data rate with LoRa. I'm in the process of building an anemometer on the mast of my boat, which should give me wind speed and wind direction in real time or at least once per second. This should happen wirelessly from the top of the mast at a height of 20m down to the boat. Which transmission technology would you recommend: LoRa, WLAN, EPSNow, ... ?
@AndreasSpiess

All of the mentioned methods should work if there are no obstacles between the transmitter and the receiver. So I would start my tests with ESPnow or WiFi (both have similar properties) and only move to LoRa if it does not work. LoRa SF7 is fast enough for your purpose

The first version of the TTGO boards were working just fine for us. Now, the price has gone up significantly (we buy huge lots). The screw by the "3D" antenna caused absolutely no problem. The shield over the ESP32 chip was entirely not needed for us. The stock antenna was also just fine -- if you need a better antenna, just upgrade to suit your needs. All of these non-issues could be changed by users to suit their needs if it is so important to them. We are professors and university students using these boards for projects that are paid for by public funding, grants, etc. The price went up enough that it hurt us badly. All for a bunch of changes that did absolutely nothing for us and could be done by users if they needed to customize their boards more. One of our projects was creating a huge mesh network in the Amazon that protected the forest from illegal logging and animal poachers. The price hike for the TTGO changes, forced upon us, reduced our network enough that the project is cancelled for now. Thanks.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 років тому
I have no influence on TTGOs price policy and I do not see why the prices should have gone up because of these minor changes. I checked the prices I paid and did not find a price increase. The first Heltec cost 15 dollars and the first TTGO 14 dollars. Currently, 2 TTGO boards still cost 27 dollars. If you buy huge quantities I am sure you can contact TTGO directly and ask them.

Andreas, do you have any problems with the ESP32 LoRa boards powered by a 18650 battery? I have two TTGO LoRa32 boards that won't work very long on just the battery. Sending a LoRa message every 15 seconds and flashing on the LED, after about 30 minutes the LED will not light and a little bit later the LoRa message is not received. But if I connect the EXACT SAME battery to a 5V boost converter and power the ESP32 from that 5V, then it works for several hours until the battery finally runs down. Very puzzling.

I only had 1 connector more than with a normal antenna. And the coax I used (RG316) should have less than 1 dB loss for the 30 cm. Nate Welch below created a change in the library which should enable the 20 dBm. I will try it next week.
@f8ukp
@f8ukp 5 років тому
Hi Andreas - yes you are right the coax will have very little loss but the crimped connection will have some as well. While the connector as such will most probably have very little, the crimp if not done perfectly will add some loss as well. I have taken as a habit to add 0.5 to 1 dB of loss for every mounted connector. So while you may indeed have 20 dBm power on the output pin, you may not have this by the time it reaches the on board connector. It would be worth trying this with a known (and expensive) measured coax cable from R&S/Telegärtner versus a cheap crimped cable in a factory of Guangzhou or Shenzen ;-)

I agree and I think I will try the library first. If we get more power, we take it. If not I use your explanations to accept that I measure a little wrong. Because it would not produce more power if I invest in an expensive cable ;-) When I started to buy equipment I decided to go for a good price/performance, not highest quality. I would anyway not be able to afford it.

@@AndreasSpiess Yes, If I add 2-3 meters distance then everything is ok but why wifi doesn't trigger RCWL-0516 motion but LoRa does? I'm going also to reduce RCWL-0516 sensivity by adding resitor to "R-GN" on RCWL-0516 board. It seems RCWL-0516 is triggered by the LoRa only when I set the higest "TxPower" and the higest "SpreadingFactor". For default LoRa settings it is working fine. I've tested that LoRa works better with XYC-WB-DC motion sensor. I can set max "TxPower" on LoRa and motion won't be triggered during sending data.
