It has been three and a half (??!!) years that I've been living up at Cerro Gordo now! What an insane journey it has been. The best times of my life and this past month was no different. I did a lot of new explorations, new discoveries, made some silver, explored some abandoned mines, and even searched for some ancient burial sites.

I have been following your journey since your first video about Cerro Gordo. I just want to say that at 3.5 years, the biggest change is how happy you seem and how much energy and optimism you have for everything. Maybe some of that comes from being more comfortable with filming and all, but you seem way happier, and that's really wonderful. You really have created such an amazing thing that so many of us have followed during our worst times, and its great watching it thrive through adversity and how many people have come together to create this community in Cerro Gordo. It's a dream of mine to someday do an art residency there so I too can give back a little bit.

Yes I agree an have noticed Brent really seems so much happier then early at Cerro Gordo. He looks really healthy as well!!! Love the excitement he has for exploring new areas of the mine an restoring the town!!! He’s living so many people dream right now!

I feel like most people don’t want to be forgotten to time. I also like knowing where my relatives are resting. I love the idea of trying to identify those buried there, and marking their graves somehow.

I agree I think if your concern is that spirits would be upset you could put that to rest because you are allowing connections to be made. Even if it’s not family that person has a name and history with the town. This gives this place so much history that can be better connected as each of these people have history and if you can locate more then you are doing more of a service to the town and the person.

Gotta be careful with that, most US states permit exhuming graves over 100 years old, but in many cases you need local government permission, and in some states, even with the 100-year rule, to knowingly dig up human remains - even on private property - is illegal. Definitely want to check using ground-penetrating radar first as well, as you do not know exactly what you’ll find. There’s also the moral issue, which you mentioned.

I think he needs to dig into it a little more with better equipment. Maybe it's just me, nothing against them but I think the man with the dog is just bs'ing. My dog sits down too when I stop walking, just my opinion though. I could be wrong just hope the guys not charging Brent for his services. Brent's so wholesome

I used to watch these videos every day they came out. I stopped for awhile, and life got busy. I saw this and had to stop by to see what’s up. And I’m SO GLAD I did. This man is a man to look up too, and I hope some day to go out there and see the town.

It's always lovely to see updates, so thanks, Brent. My personal thoughts about recovering human remains, as someone with a degree in archaeology and who lived in China for many years, I would find someone trusted in the Chinese community to work with. There are museums or societies all along the West Coast that would most likely have a specialist, at minimum a historian, to navigate the complicated past. The way I see it is that this heritage belongs to the Chinese immigrants. It's a dark past, filled with mistreated workers who risked their lives to come work in America, only to be banned from the country for years. Like with all cultural heritage, my instinct would be to get the community involved, so that they may find closure or answers.

I agree with this 100%. My first thought was build a shrine, then I thought "..I'm not Chinese.. What do I know?" Ask the community what's the most culturally appropriate course of action, get them involved

Definitely want to bring a community Chinese Buddhist monk/ Shaman in to set all the trapped spirits and free them back home into the afterlife, after doing this you may find things to go easier your way! So much history here and thank you for the content!

Is it costly to dig up? I am sure there are ways to respectfully remove some remains to identify. Ask the online community, I am sure there are groups that can investigate this for you. It will not haunt you it will be about coexisting with ghosts, not fearing them, you are in a ghost town after all.

It would be a very difficult task to identify remains. That being said, these folks are lost to the sands of time. Would be a very noble gesture to try to identify. Love your videos and would love to visit someday.

Likely some mitigation possible via diverting water off road, eventually, perhaps into some mini ponds in canyon bottom, realizing some places the road IS the canyon bottom and making a ditch down the side very difficult at best, possibly making road mainly of large rocks carefully nested in worse areas?

I first started watching you right after I started bartending downtown in a big city, I’ve always been in awe of what you’ve been doing. I couldn’t understand why you’d want to be alone, and overtime I managed to be friend my now current stalker (I’ve had to quit my job & move 4 hours away) and being in the mountains finally made me understand the need for peace. Life’s been so quiet since I stopped bartending (being around drunks all the time, even befriending them. ) and now the goal is to save up and move into an rv full time with my dogs. It’s not lonely, the loneliest thing is the fear of being unhappy again. I finally made it through the worst parts of my life, now I have to just work toward my goals. The day I’m able to bring the dogs & come see your ghost town will be the day that everything I’ve walked away from, worked so tirelessly towards will let me know I finally made it. Thanks for never giving up!

I know I can’t be the only one that worries about being forgotten about when you’re gone. Everyone should want to leave an impression that no one forgets. These graves are people that have been forgotten and I’m sure that’s not how they wanted it to be.

@@GhostTownLiving I agree with @matthewwilliams9883. Were these marked graves that needed refurbishing or relabeling I could understand not wanting to disturb them. To be left, forgotten, on a hillside would be a torment. Also, consider that in finding and properly burying anyone that may be found, you may be giving closure to a family line that has a mystery or big gap in their lineage. It's your land and your call. I fully respect either decision you go with and I understand how that can be difficult. Maybe confer with the locals more and see what their view is on it? Anyhow, your endeavor is amazingly inspirational and I hope to be able to come visit your wonderful town soon!

I feel that when we die, our bodies return to nature and the people who love us are the ones who will remember us. I have four daughters and I will hopefully have grandchildren in the future who will remember me and the love I gave them. Also things have now changed due to technology and social media. We will all leave our digital footprint when we die, memorialized social media pages, thousands of photographs and videos, our whole lives will be documented from birth through to death so we won't be forgotten.

@@fdholley I also find the mines to be a bit creepy .. but only when Brent goes down there alone, for some reason. I find myself holding my breath when he gets into a tight spot - even though I know that he has to be okay because he's uploaded the video! It's just creepy,that's all. And very dangerous!

I watch a lot of exploring videos from people who go into abandoned and forgotten places, in the USA, Canada and here in the U.K. Wales is famous for its Lead & Silver Mines, all carved out by hand. We don't produce enough of our own Minerals today so rely on imports. David in Lincolnshire U.K.

Congratulations on your 3.5 years! Also, I hope your road recovery moves swiftly and safely! Regarding the remains of the bodies...I think you should let them rest. Whether it is in peace or unrest, you seem to have tranquility in Cerro Gordo, and think this is not the time to invite a disturbance. But! I would recognize the places that the dog detected and leave a remembrance to honor the dead.

Miss the desert around the Sierra Nevadas more than I can ever put into words. There's nothing that comes close to rounding a switch-back and coming upon an abandoned mine or camp. Who lived there? What was their story? Their hopes and their dreams? Triumphs and tragedies? I am so envious of your adventure. Although I can not imagine the fortitude and dedication it has required over the last 40 months. Thank you. As a mine explorer in the UK (Cornwall), I have dug into mines where they have been sealed for over 100 years and such a thrill to be the first back in. Like you, I adore finding the miner's artifacts and fully get your excitement to finding these lost levels. I hope you strike gold with some fine Levi's my friend !!

I've been loosely following your journey since the start. Your first video popped into my recommended a few weeks after it was released and I instantly subscribed but haven't had too much time to actively watch your content, just every once in a while. However I have to say that your content has gotten incredibly good and it's always been very entertaining, and I just love how optimistic and adventurous you are about everything in them. You've created something amazing that very few people have the opportunity to see and if I ever end up in the area you can bet I will be visiting if possible. I think my favorite videos so far have been the ones where you're developing the farm, such as the restoration of the really old building or the water tank project. It's just really interesting to see you overcome these challenges that we normally take for granted are already solved. Keep going, I can't wait to see what it looks like at 5 years!

Hi Brent, I get to relive your vlogs with my dad who is 76 and legally blind now. He taught me how to pan for gold and detect and we went down many mine holes in Victoria Australia. He cannot get out to do any of that now and he misses it the most, so l tell him about your 900 level mine and what you are doing at Cerro Gordo. He loves that you go down the unexplored mine tunnels and the stuff you find. And l like spending time with my dad and telling him what you have been up to. We get to remminess about the mines we went down and things we found or did and l look forward to watching your vlogs and passing them on to my dad. I think purely for safety reasons, you should have internet down on the 900 level. If you plan on spending anymore than a day down there, you should have the ability to contact the outside world in case of an emergency. Even if you choose not to use the internet down there, it's better to have it and not use it than not have it and need it.

I agree, the intercom is cool but it's only useful if somebody is in the hoist house listening. Having internet would be a way to send a signal in an emergency. But I agree with not having internet access is part of the charm too. So if I were you I would install some purpose built internet-connected emergency device, but not a full-on WiFi router.

I’ve been there twice. First time I rode my dirtbike thru to the Swansea- Cerro Gordo OHV route and the second time to look around and buy some merch. That whole area is magical to me. Cant wait to stay at the hotel.

@@GhostTownLiving of course Brent!😎 I used to live in both Bakersfield and Lake Isabella,California. Went to high school and college in Bakersfield. Up in the Pacific Northwest now. You're a very dedicated man to Cerro Gordo...and I'm sure that town loves you for it. She's an old town...but she loves you for all you do. Oh my goodness! I love your videos. My father lived up in the Alabama Hills, and we made several trips to CG together. It was definitely off the beaten track back in the 1980s/1990s!! I fell in love with it. How could I not? I have loved the High Desert and the Eastern Sierra since I was a child. Thank you for producing these videos and sharing you stories and LOVE for such a unique place.

Your updates have always been worth waiting for. Please never stop. So much of what you talk about your personal experience and perspective reaches my soul in a very profound way. Brent, I pray that the remnants of Hurricane Hillary doesn't do any damage there in Cerro Gordo or to the road. That's all you need for that road after it was fixed through blood, sweat, and tears of frustration. Stay safe and make sure your animals are safe as well. Love to see all the work being done on the hotel btw. And it's fantastic that people are connecting with you to provide late 1800's furniture to use in the hotel as well. I really want to share your stories and your videos with my upper elementary students to show them what learning about our country’s past with passion can be like. You exemplify the passionate learner! I’m on the east coast and most of my students haven’t been that far west so I love how much of the landscape you include in your videos as well as the history, wonder if you would ever make any short clips of the especially historic or the inspirational parts of your videos :D

I have to say, this has been the most amazing video I have seen on UKposts and I thank you for that. I live in Reno, 20 minutes away from Virginia City. I am drawn to that small mining town in an almost obsessive way. I find the town and it's history fascinating. I love uncovering rocks from the area, but know little about them. But covet them for some strange reason. Your explanation at the end makes sense to me and helps me to understand the passion I have for our little town. Thanks again!

Every time I watch one of your videos it leaves me in such a stoic mood. You do a very good job of addressing such huge concepts. Your “paying it forward” comment really set the tone for me. It affirms - in a way - that what we as humans do will eventually crumble and be forgotten by the world, but also perhaps the true human experience is hidden in the “why” behind what we did. There’s got to be a reason that it feels the way it does to slowly discover another soul’s “why”

I really enjoyed this. Hard to believe its been over 3 years! Your journey and this channel has been so fun and inspiring to watch during these wild few years. I think trust yourself and see how you feel about the bodies. It may bring closure to someone by identifying, but perhaps some things are better left as they are. You can honor them either way. 😊

Brent, by telling the stories and sharing your adventures you pay tribute to the people who were there before you. if you dont already have one, create a wall listing the names and any known dates they were there. maybe memorializing this way will keep their names read in the future to come.

As Brent learns, his wisdom of life and living come out for us to learn. I'm of the thought that native indians had special people with in their tribe designated as "Story Tellers", but in reality Oral History. These story's were about events and the wisdom gained from such events. Brent has taken YT to the level of American Oral and Visual History on Cerro Gordo and a very unique niche that he has brought back to life in a unique way. Well done Brent, you are a cut above on this story telling. Looking forward to many, many more years...

No B.S., follow your intuition on what to do. I think that the buried are there to remind you of the absolute hard life those experienced within the small town of Cerro Gordo. You're bringing light to the subject. Like me, I feel kind of obsessed with history, mostly the history of the old west and the gold rush. I think giving them their space works best for you financially and the spirits. They have accepted you for a reason, and you’re right about not wanting to touch something you’re not supposed to. Man Brent. I’ve gotta say. I watched you from the beginning and haven’t seen your videos in over a year. Knowing how much heartbreak you went through and seeing you still discovering new things and making Cerro Gordo better is inspiring. I know it’s gotta be crazy and hectic with all the permits to build and gathering everyone out there but outside of that it seems you live a real simple life that many dream of. I began watching your story because it was interesting to me that these ghost towns exist and that you decided to live in one by yourself. Now I see all the amazing things you’ve done in 3 years and it inspires me to get back to exploring myself. Thank you Brent for sharing your story and the story of those before you. One of these days I hope to make it out there and stay in the new American Hotel.

Man I think you have one hell of a adventure going on there. So cool looking for the unknown and finding the cool stories from the past. I love talking to the old timers who really have some stories that should be passed on before they are forgotten. I hope you are documenting all of your findings and going to keep them alive and going on for someone else to discover 50 years down the road and they would get as excited about as you and I do.
