That's true if the hard drive is off, but one thing that the book did not comment on is that if the hard dive is running as the discs are cut they will vapourise themselves inside the case. So their best shot was the hard drives being small enough and placed to go between the wires. At least if the hard drive is anything like current day hard drives.

@@hardensoul7248 no, the dimension stuff is that the proton exists in 10 dimensions, and was unfolded into 2 to etch the computer onto it. @gosnooky
@gosnooky Місяць тому
The sophon expanding to such a large scale is such a hard concept to explain to non-science folks, but the scales can be. If you had a small cube the size of a sugar cube, and you sliced away squares from it at the smallest possible measurable width (the Planck length, which is 1.6 x 10^-35 metres), then attached each slice together into a 2d plane, that grid, if bent into a sphere could envelop the entire observable universe many times over. From a sugar cube. This is the scale at which these higher dimensions are theoretically bound. Insane stuff. This isn't just about what we, as humans don't know - we don't even know what we don't know.

@JeshuaSquirrel Місяць тому
@@jackalope_huntermore than three spatial dimensions is a real concept in physics and mathematics. Though almost impossible for us to fully imagine, geometry gives us a tool for visualizing higher-dimensional objects by unfolding them into a lower dimension. For example, a square unfolded into one dimension is a line the length of the square's perimeter. A hollow cube unfolded to two dimensions is a figure with the area of six times the area of one side of the cube. A fourth-dimensional cube, called a tesseract (Marvel didn't invent the name), can be unfolded into a three-dimensional object composed of eight cubes. Going from a higher spatial dimension to a smaller one always takes a much larger space to represent all the parts of the object.

I'm getting different numbers than a sugar cube. The radius of the observable universe is ~4.4*10^23 kilometers (or 4.4*10^26 meters) Surface area of a sphere is 4 * pi * r^2 So the surface area would be 243.2777 * 10^52 m^2 Multiplying that by Planck length gives a rough volume of 389 * 10^17 cubic meters. The cube root of that would be a cube ~3400 km on a side. Can you double-check my math to see where I made a mistake?

The show dialed up the spectacle aspect (blood bath) of the Panama scene, because of Netflix. Wade and Clearance discusses how swat team and bombing is not an option, because it might risk either destroying the drive or mike Evan’s destroying the drive after he finds out there’s an attack. The scene is described as “silent and fast” in the book. Sophon here are a bit oversimplified than in the books... In the book there is an entire chapter dedicated to it... It very well explained how Trisolarans/SanTi take proton from the 11th dimension and unfold it into a two dimensional plane in 3d space... Unfolded protons are so huge that they can be wrapped around their planet. Once the unfolding process is completed they start etching circuits into the proton and load it with Sophon's AI software... After that they shrink it down back to 11th dimension till it goes back to subatomic particle size, retaining the modifications they made to 2d proton... And then they shoot the two Sophons from Trisolaris 4 lightyears away to Earth with pin point accuracy... Imagine shooting 1cm target from 1000 miles away... The entire thing is insane 🤯🤯!!!

For those curious about what sophons are there is a tenant in physics that all objects occupy multiple physical dimensions, it's just that we cannot see the higher tier dimensions (up to 10 dimensions according to string theory). The Trisolarins unfolded 4 photons from the 4th to 10th dimensions and brought them into having only 3 dimensions which they then used as a "platter" to create what amounts to as four matrioshka brains (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrioshka_brain). Once they where turned on, they were then folded back into their normal 10 dimensions (becoming the size of a photon again) and then each pair was entangled. So, TLDR version is that a sophon is a sentient AI that is built onto a single photon. If you're having issues with wondering how to unfold an object from multiple dimensions, you can see it in action by any video that shows a simple UV texturing of a cube. It takes a 3D cube, unfolds each side into a flat, 2D space and allows an artist to texture it.

@FinGeek4now
@FinGeek4now Місяць тому
@@Eric-ez2tk Ah, I thought I was mishearing it. Thanks for the confirmation =) Are you sure they unfolded it into two dimensions? They wouldn't have been able to etch anything onto it as it wouldn't have depth if they did so. That's why I kept thinking it was a photon and not a proton - because they sent it back at light speed, which only a photon can get up to since protons have mass (photons get away with it since they're a quasi-particle in the natural shape of a wave - in our 3D space)
@Eric-ez2tk
@Eric-ez2tk Місяць тому
@@FinGeek4now suppose all matter exist in all dimensions. Unfolding Proton into 2 dimension so they can manipulate it more easily. It's a little far fetched even for the trisolarians, refered as a scifi legend in their own home world. But they had to try, even after realizing there are intelligent beings inside the world of a Proton. Accelerate a Proton to light speed is within their capability since they can accelerate their fleet to 1% of lights speed.
@FinGeek4now
@FinGeek4now Місяць тому
@@Eric-ez2tk I could see if they fused the components on each side, that would work, but they specifically mentioned etching which requires depth. The thing about acceleration of a proton to the speed of light is that it's not possible since anything with any mass cannot reach 100% ls. 99.99~%, sure if given enough energy to get that fast, but not 100% since it would make it's mass infinite (hence why I thought they misinterpreted it from being a photon instead since it has 0 mass. 0 * infinite = 0). One other thing I played around with was finding the area's of various spheres, 2D, 3D, 4D and 10D; given that the approximate radius of a proton is 0.88fm, if one was unfolded from 10D space, it would have an area of ~ 96.8 femtometers.. not exactly large enough to wrap around a typical virus (100 nanometers). For comparison: 100 nanometers (virus) = 1,000,000 femtometers.. our proton is 97 femtometers (rounded up). The series is pretty good, but it just doesn't take that final step to cause me to suspend my disbelief tbh - which is why I'll say it's not a great series. I can disregard the math above, since.. sure, okay.. but things like: 1. They have the power to manipulate multiple dimensions, so why not just make a couple of solar engines and combine their suns, then re-order the orbits of their planets to make them stable. This is achievable at around T-1.75 to T-2.0 levels of civilization. 2. If the above is not achievable due to material resources, why not just find another solar system with habitable planets and start terraforming - Given their tech level, rate of technological progress, livespan and the fact that they are extremephobes, they should have been able to do this thousands of years ago. 3. If they didn't want to run into anyone else in the dark forest, why not come to this system and take refuge on Mars or Venus either permanantely or temporarily until they can find a home away from us. This Trisolarin - Earth conflict makes no sense from a cost/benefit analysis or sociological analysis (survival at all costs). Resources? There are more resources in the asteroid belts than there are on Earth without near the amount of "fuss" (physics, politically, economically, militarily) on getting said resources. It would be different if any of those three points were addressed even slightly, but they're not (iirc).

A difference from the books regarding the 400 year travel time, which you sound like you'd like to hear: They simplified and said San Ti can travel at 1% lightspeed, so it takes 400 years to cross 4 light years. In the books, they can actually reach a top speed of 10% of lightspeed, but they have to accelerate AND decelerate (think of the burn then flip and reverse burn in Expanse). That acceleration is inherently difficult to do quickly, and is also maybe tempered by the fact that the g forces have to be tolerable for the San Ti on the ships. By contrast, not only are individual protons much easier to accelerate to near lightspeed, but they don't have to worry about g forces. Of course, that leaves an open question about how the sophons decelerate, and how they locomote period, but I guess once you're unfolding the hidden dimensions of fundamental particles, it's basically magic anyway, lol.

Bro, here I am again. The play about the destruction of the Judgment Day ship on the Panama Canal, referred to as the "GUZHENG PLAN" in the original book because the arrangement of nanofibers resembles the Chinese instrument GUZHENG. However, what the play doesn't make clear is that there are numerous plans to deal with this ship, but there's no guarantee that their storage devices won't be destroyed by the people on board before they're seized. This is crucial information concerning the survival of the Earth. After thorough discussion among military officials from various countries, they finally decided to use nanomaterials to disassemble the ship. The nanofibers are sharp enough, and even if the hard disk storage is sliced, the surface remains smooth, and the data can be recovered. Furthermore, the people on board are all members of the Evans organization, a group of individuals who wish for the arrival of extraterrestrials to destroy humanity. There aren't as many children aboard. Also, the reason for choosing this method is because it's silent and inconspicuous, unlike the noisy portrayal in the play. Evans would have time to escape. Wouldn't they also have time to destroy the hard disks?

Also, due to the unstable environment of the Three-Body world, their civilization develops relatively slowly but over long periods. The latest civilization achieved exploration of the micro world, enabling them to unfold a microscopic particle into macroscopic dimensions, forming a two-dimensional plane covering an entire planet and endowing it with intelligence. The Sophons can achieve real-time communication through quantum entanglement (although this setup is not scientifically accurate). Thus, before the Three-Body civilization even reaches the solar system, they can monitor anything, access any information on Earth at any time, almost at the speed of light. They can orbit the Earth many times per second. However, in the original work, it wasn't mentioned that the Sophons could manipulate recorded data in our computers, which seems to be an original creation by the series' editors.

In the book, the ETO (human collaborators) were actually in the midst of a civil war with Evans' side (The Redemptionists) and Shen Yufei or Tatiana's side (The Adventists, who has the same intentions as Ye Wenjie). Moreover, Ye Wenjie isn't actually that fanatical in the book. In fact, she herself is already doubting everything, with her confessing that she technically can't even control the organization anymore- but the followers ultimately treats her with high regard.

There are too many repetitions of fake sci-fi wars. If aliens can approach us in an unimaginable way, they must be able to attach us in the same way, too. Laser swords, nuclear missiles, sending troops, and so on are nothing different from wars on Earth, and there are no reasonable scientific explanations for their weapons. 3body book 2 and 3 illustrate the "real" weapons in such a war that humans would never be able to imagine. I really appreciate Liu's mind-bending ideas, and I hope the sci-fi type would be separated from the cartoon type in movie sorting.

Btw, to those that may think why doesnt the San Ti Ren just use the Sophon to kill all of us. It can't. The sophon is fundamentally still as fragile and weak as a proton. Its just that because they are able to unfold its higher dimensions it can fit exponentially more stuff into it. Hence the very big computer. However, if it let say unfold itself in a human body, it will instantly implode and cause no damage at all to us because the proton has virtually no mass at all. So the most the sophon can do is affect other particles on a similar scale, like for example microparticles like other protons (light) or electrons, which is why it is capable of spying, affect particle accelerator results and imprint illusions to us. So they will heavily handicap us in the field of Quantum Physics. We can never progress in the fields which would allow us to further understand the mysteries of the universe (which is what they are afraid of).

02:38 I think Dr. Ye's beliefs are easy enough to understand. All she saw in her entire life up to that point was human beings doing terrible, terrible things to each other and to everything else. The San-Ti to her represented hope, her only source of hope that the world itself might become a better place, that humans might be saved from themselves. I don't agree, but I understand. Especially given her history. 03:41 Spoiler. Yes. 05:55 No. If they just try to seize the ship, the people on board will destroy the drive--which is the only real reason to seize the ship! 06:02 Not "just" another cult. This cult actually IS in contact with a highly advanced civilization. Or, they were. 10:21 I absolutely agree. Don't try to live, but actually do it. Live! 12:17 Yes. We are at war. And war is TERRIBLE and HORRIBLE and DISGUSTING. Some folks have a horrible time handling it. And even the ones who can handle it are paying a price. Don't know if you ever saw "Chernobyl" but this whole segment and storyline reminds me of the young soldier in that series' episode four. Which still haunts me, they way we saw his soul shred. 13:35 No. They have to kill EVERYONE before they realize they're under attack and have a chance to destroy the drive. It has to be total, mysterious, and disorientingly terrifying as well as swift while not destroying the drive. 18:49 My father was a veteran of WWII. He had nightmares almost till the day he died. Yeah. 28:01 Because nothing can move faster than light. Nothing. And something really heavy can be accelerated to even one percent the speed of light requires enormous amounts of energy, on orders of magnitude more than we can produce in total for ten years. And that is for every single ship. A proton, that can be accellerated much much faster, and easier. Thank you so much for sharing your reaction. Very honest and powerful, asking all sorts of interesting questions. There are two important but subtle questions this series quietly posed that are important: 1. If there is another technological civilization only four light years from Earth, that must mean the galaxy is full of such, absolutely full of civilizations. So why didn't the San-Ti ask any of them for help? 2. And for that matter, why didn't the San-Ti go and look for some other world, one that might be right for them? We can do that, in very basic ways. It must be easy for them to know what exoplanets are like. Why go here instead of one of them?

Its wasnt particularly well described in the show, and the decision to go for maximum drama undercuts the whole thing. The nanofibers basically guarantee the destruction of the ship and more crucially, everybody on said ship, faster than anyone can react to said destruction. Thus, any incidental damage to the hard drive is minimal when compared to damage intending to destroy the data. The problem with the scene was Evans being able to figure out what happened and somehow get to the computer room, grab the drive, and make it to the engine room. That shouldnt have happened. They should have showed evens get cut down in his chair still begging the aliens for answers. Because if Evans was fast enough to respond as he did, then he SHOULD have activated whatever method they had to destroy the drive. Instead he ran off to nowhere for maximum drama.

They made an AI using a proton which is a small positive part of an atom, they did it because their science is so advance that they’ve already uncovered how to unfold the higher dimensions ( in our science we only have 3 well 4 if you include time) unfolding such using huge amount of energy made the proton so big, and by the time it got so big they manipulated and put circuitry in it so it would have a mind a on its own… they made 4 of it (Sophons), well technically 2 pairs since protons are entangled to each pair on a quantum level which means whatever happens to the other will also happen to its pair. They send it to us so they can spy on us and also because protons with the use of immense energy (just like the trisolarians) are capable of traveling space with speed closer to that of speed of light, that’s why it arrived in our planet way ahead of them… that’s why they can cause the winking of universe, or the countdown or the erroneous science experiments… all because of sophons changing its size and ability for the sake of keeping us from developing fast… cause honestly I think humanity is still a type 1 civilization though we are indeed a fast one… scary.

In the books, it was explained that even if the hard drive gets cut, it would still be easy to retrieve the data as the nanofiber cut would be clean.
