Lulas design was my favorite but it kind of missed the mark. The whole idea was a small office space not another living room I think Lula also has an issue with proportions. If that were life sized her design would look unbalanced, given the proportions using the book case as a guide it seems the built-in seating wasn't drawn to proper size.

Me too, small room does not need fireplace, in addition it takes more space, may be if she replaces it with full wall mirror, I like the green room but with curve desk instead l sharp edge one.
@jlasf
@jlasf Рік тому
Yup. A fireplace you can't sit in front of? Why? She mentions a desk, but it is small and faces away from the window. What an awful place to work! Alvin has too much furniture and the curtain should extend to the window frame - it would fool the eye and make the window look bigger. (I always have Roman shades hung from the ceiling to make windows look taller and use curtains to make windows look wider.) None of them provide file cabinet space, although you could put some file boxes on Laura's wall. I would have put recessed lights over the desk - more work light might be needed. Laura answered the assignment. Alvin sort of did. Lula completely ignored the assignment and made a den, not an office.

Dark colors *can* look really nice in small spaces, but it's important to remember that lighting is key! If you have a well lit room, a dark color isn't gonna kill your perception of that space, but if your lighting isn't great, I would think twice about it, or at the very least consider where you may need to add artificial lighting.

One of the first things I learned in interior design school was functionality needs to go before aesthetics. If your space isn’t going to function then it being beautiful doesn’t really matter. And lula and Alvin, while beautiful, created spaces that weren’t functional. Laura’s space is so functional and also beautiful. Sure, she didn’t pull in a day bed or fireplace, but those aren’t needed and just clutter up the space

I really liked Lula's overall idea for the office, the colors are comfortable and the lounge area is really nice, but I think a desk is an element that can't be eliminated from an office, once it's used for a handful of activitys, not just for a computer to sit on. Also, the fireplace is a little unecessary in such a small space. I would replace the fireplace for a desk and make the couch a little bit smaller, so it's more functional.

Also, the main purpose of the room is to house guests. Overall, it doesn't really meet the brief. I appreciate that Alvin’s design considered that the office could double as a guest room but it was too “loud” and the TV could be distracting. A consideration that wasn’t mentioned is that you need a good background for your video meetings, along with good lighting so that you look professional on camera. The green room was great because the shelves and natural light would look fantastic in a Zoom meeting. I am commenting again to beg AD for room dimensions! I love this series, But without dimensions the designers can really assume the room is any size they want. In previous episodes some designers assumed a room was massive - and some assumed it was modest ~ I specifically remember two weeks ago, one designer planning out the bedroom as if it was huge! The items she put in the room made it feel literally massive! And the other designers used realistic proportions and the room seems appropriate sized... Maybe its just me? But I really think DIMENSIONS would be greatly helpful as a viewer, and as a designer. EDIT: Its Lula! I just finished this episode, and she did it again. I understand proportions can make a room seem much bigger, But if you look at the render its even wider than the previous rooms! The sectional she used by the window? How is that realistic? It would be so tiny in real life! The way she designs the room makes it feel much bigger than it actually is - and not in a good way like, wow! you made use of this small space! - In a way where it makes me think, Does she actually understand proportion? Compare 8:51 and 9:25 / The rooms are completely different widths.
@RayPossibleGT
@RayPossibleGT Рік тому
If you look at the ceiling in Lula’s picture, they actually extended the walls further in which is why it is wider than the other 2. I think they should’ve been given a rule to that they aren’t allowed to break the structures to extend it. Same goes to the previous video where one of the designers extended the ceiling in his kitchen design for the arch look.

But if you look at 8:30 Alvin's image has the same proportions than Lula's. Actually it's just the picture that is zoomed in at some parts of the video, she isn't messing with the actual space. If you want to compare proportions amongst them you should do it with the "Final thoughts" section. 14:21 14:30 and 14:52. That being said I do wonder if they have a fixed set of dimensions, so that they don't go for a bigger or smaller room.

I was thinking the same. As someone with a degree in OT I thought these people have not thought about ergonomics at all. I'm sure the difference in professions and personalities will affect the way a person work from home, and in some cases sitting on a couch with a laptop is doable, or watching a huge TV screen that's placed way to high on the wall might work for 30 minutes... But for people who sit in front of a computer the entire working day, a proper ergonomic desk set up where the hight of the desk, the hight of the computer screen, a good ergonomic chair (I could go on) has to be individualized to the persons (client) needs. It doesn't matter how fancy an interior is, if it's not functional. It seemed as if they didn't really get any details to follow for their assignment, so if it was just about designing a home office that they personally would use, then I can see why they chose what they chose. I found Laura's green office to be the only one that might be able to meet some ergonomic needs (minus the TV screen) if it was for a person working all day on their laptop. Alvin's design seemed better for people who don't actually work from home but prefer to have an office space for the rare occasion they do need to work on their computer at home and wanted to use it as a guest room in addition to that. Lula's design felt more like a small library where you could get creative, sit and read, but not use it for a full workday of computer work.. So I guess it would all depend on the client and if that person actually needed an office for 100% desk work.
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Рік тому
@primrosedahlia9466 I thought the best way to work ergonomically was to NOT sit in a chair for very long. That would def be the end of my back's ability to continue on with other projects for the rest of the day.
@primrosedahlia9466
@primrosedahlia9466 Рік тому
And you're absolutely right about not sitting too long in front of a computer. it's adviced to find a work routine that works for you, like taking breaks in between and go for a walk around the office to get something to drink, do some light stretches etc, whatever makes your body feel comfortable and is accepted where you work. There are huge differences between companies and how they deal with stuff like this. But the problem is that a lot of people are so stressed out that they forget to do that and work for long intervals and with poor posture. But ergonomics is important. If you get a good chair/table etc and those are the right height for you - then it's much easier to sit in front of a computer than if you don't have that

I really like Lula's L-shaped couch and how she adjusted the window and added shelves. The fireplace idea was a good thought to help with the awkward shape if the room, but I think instead of that she should have incorporated a desk that helped with that problem. Maybe a glass desk or something. Laura's idea was more practical, but it seemed very simplistic and cramped. I don't think the plants would survive in that room, and overall, the office seemed kind of dreary and closet-like. Alvin's light fixture was very interesting and seems like a good idea to help with the long skinny room. However, the wallpaper was too busy and the furniture made the space seem very cramped. I like getting ideas from different designers, but I would be hesitant to actually have someone else design my space for me. It's interesting to see their ideas and thoughts, but people are obviously so different, and a space needs to reflect your own ideas quite a bit is my thinking.

I’m interested to see how these three different styles would work together in harmony with the same small space and shared ideas. Lovely!

Laura is always OP in these "challenges". She always makes spaces I would actually love to be in.
