My dad married a Ukrainian woman it was the worst 5 years of my childhood. Crazy how she left right when she got citizenship, looking back I think it’s profound how I recognized her for what she was when I saw her in the airport. I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from dating a Ukrainian person but if it seems too good to be true it generally is.

Having already have married a Ukrainian woman thru a long distance relationship and having been married for 20 years I can easily say that it has been the best decision I have ever made in my life. I agree with all your points but I wouldn't classify them as problems but as challenges. Don't be surprised if there is some suspicion to begin with but once you show yourself trustworthy to her and especially to her family you will find a true and faithful friend in good times and bad. If you make a promise be sure to fulfill that promise. I would add when getting to know her. 1) Familiarize yourself with their culture and learn the dos and especially the don'ts. For example when giving flowers give an odd number because an even number represents a funeral. . The are some interesting superstitions to respect and play along with. Like looking in mirror if going away from the house and and come back for something, not handing a item over a door threshold, not killing spiders, the monetary value of bird poop , sitting silently before long travel, holding you wallet up to a full moon are some of my favorites. . 2) Especially when visiting understand that you are guest that will be treated as a king but in many cases their living standard and wages are much lower than in western countries. Find ways to help them out without making a seem like charity. 3) Bring respectful gifts 4) When writing to her provide the letter in English and the same letter translated in her language. They will appreciate the extra care you are giving. 5) Though she may know English in many cases it is very rudimentary and rusty. Have a translator available for the first few calls until she feels comfortable without one. Also speak very slowly and in short sentences. 6) Don't rush things. It took me 2 years before I found her and then It took about a year before the first visit and about 2 years before she came to live with me. Because I moved slowly I was able to be weed out several potential scammers. In the mean time there were weekly phone calls and follow up letters and gifts for special occasions and surprise gifts. The closer you are to Ukraine the more often in person visits are feasible. In all I was able to visit 3 times with each visit 2-3 weeks in length . Once she comes to live with you in your country I would add that the more things that you can make familiar for her the better off you will be. So I would recommend 1) Find Russian speaking or Ukrainian speaking stores where some familiar and favorite foods can be found. 2) Find Russian speaking or Ukrainian speaking tv channels (ETVnet,com is excellent for Canadian and US areas and literally gives access to TV channels from all over the world) 3) Find Russian speaking or Ukrainian speaking churches or community centers where she can also meet Russian speaking or Ukrainian speaking friends. 4) Understand that because she is so dependent upon you in the beginning that in some sense you are raising a daughter as well as getting a new wife. Everything can be new and frightening. Patience is the key. 5) Even though she expects you to be the head of the family she is not to be treated as a maid/cook or 2nd class person. She may expect you to make a decision but she will want to be part of the major decisions. 6) The first few months are very difficult so expect a lot of tears and home sickness. Again patience and understanding is the key. So it is a lot of work but the rewards more than worthwhile. NOTE: Not everyone can make the adaptation to a new life in a new country. If you come across someone who expects everything to be the same in your country as in her country then this is a warning signal that things will not work out. I found the easiest person to establish a long distance relationship with is one who is main focus is being happy with what they have and not being unhappy with what they don't have. The problem is there are so many Ukrainian scammers that it has put a black eye on all Ukrainian women and their collective reputation has suffered badly for it.

Elena -- That was very brief , refreshing and to the point: (1) Problems with distance dating; (2) The man being the provider and protector; (3) Being a support to your Ukrainian woman when she comes to stay with you. Even before these problems, it is important to establish if there are genuine feelings for each other. If there is no genuine affection, then the relationship is a sham and will not work. So both parties must be honest with each other and tell their partners what they are looking for / hope to achieve. I hope this resonates with you Elena too.

I know a lot of people from the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. ALL the Ukraine women are very stubborn and ALWAYS have to have their way while the several women I know from Belarus are very sweet and considerate.

From my experience of dating a couple of Ukrainians and a Lithuanian. Very beautiful, good cooks, good housekeepers and incredibly feminine but you have to stand up to them and show them who the boss is. Be firm, very firm, but fair. If you treat them like this, they will love and respect you, but if you don't, they will tear you apart like an angry lioness on a bad day. They are incredibly direct and honest, which is refreshing in a way because we Brits are used to having to figure everything out with our women. With our women, you never know what she wants leaving us in the abyss of confusion. With a Ukrainian woman you will know, because she will tell you directly and in no uncertain terms. These women are incredibly confident in comparison with what we are used to and unlike a western woman, she is not out to prove she is equal. That is self-evident - why would she think otherwise? And why would you? But she is still a woman and you are still a man and that is self-evident too and this is what makes them so damn nice to spend time with. Not for a lefty-liberal though, that just will not do!

I look at the comments here and I see many who assume Ukrainian woman are different than what you find everywhere.., All men and woem can make your life hell if you choose wrong. That applies everywhere. For what I know, older women are like Latino's and Filipino's, they are pure blooded homemakers and they desire nothing more that a lovely relationship and not fear a male who drinks too much and turns into a violent abuser. She will be as afraid as the man as to if what she is dating is really the person he appears.? Otherwise they are as good as any foreign woman and what her culture can teach you brings joy into the relationship. Compared to Western women, especially American women, a man would be better off with a jungle bunny that that.. You just have to give it time. Months perhaps spending time together just being around each other. Then, if both of you look forward to meeting again and one day you realise both of you are on the same page emotionally, them grab it. One more point, leave the sex thing at the door. You don't need complications and remember, both of you are free to walk away at any time.

Very Generalized, i dated a few ukrainian women, usually i find the younger ones 20-28 very europeanized, americanized, which i dont prefer. the 30+ typically more traditional as good housewife. but, then also depends on which part of Ukraine they are from, Kyiv women are more work oriented, odessa women are a bit fishy tricky, women is smaller towns like dnipro and zaporizhia are more down to earth and family oriented. i personally find women from the east of ukraine more beautiful than the west. The women from the western parts looks like romainian and hungarian more, less slavic facial features. i dated alot of women from bulgaria, belarus, russia , romania etc, Ukrainian women are top of them

In my opinion marrying an Unkrainian woman you get a high risk. Most of them are hungry for money and oportunists. They just want to get out of Ukraine and then always seek for better opportunities. I have seen a lot of these cases in Greece.
