All the information was excellent, but tip #3 was (GRC) was it for me. I’m currently completing the Azure 900 course and The Qualysguard Training Course after being retired since 2011.

Boyd…thank you so much for letting us know how tough the industry is to get in the cybersecurity field with no prior IT admin experience. Thank goodness I have good ITF+ knowledge, but that A+ and Sec+ ain’t no joke haha! It’s all concepts, but the roadmap is now here. I started watching you 2 weeks ago and I’ve already started cybersecurity projects on my home based windows OS. I never knew what “Nmap” was and “ssh” 😅. Also, didn’t know how different Linux command prompts were than windows. Gotta show a company why I have a passion to do this. Well, I will definitely show you, Mr. Hiring Recruiter! Another thing, that Qualys SIEM VMDR training was no joke 🫡

Amen to number 2. Lots of sticks in the mud in every profession. In the private sector it’s gotta be crippling for a business to have no movement on anything because of somebody who doesn’t know enough to enable project implementations, that’s great that you learned your lesson. In the military this is very common.

Absolutely agree. I'm a Software QA Engineer and no degree. You do need to have some kind of IT understanding and be able to speak about how it is transferable to the job you're interviewing for, but degrees aren't even brought up at all. Especially in Manual and Black Box Testing.

Hi Boyd, I just found your channel a couple of days ago and I found super interesting how you mentor people on how to get jobs in the Tech field. I am a Technical Manager of the School of Biology in Wellington, I don't have IT skills to be honest. Do you think I can go straight away for a entry level cyber security role? after some training of course. Or do you recommend me to get first a QA IT role or business analyst role, and then after some experience get into the cybersecurity field? Thanks :)

I’m getting into cyber security and let me tell you how stressful and mind numbing it all is I feel so incredibly stupid and stressed figuring out how I was going to learn all of this and not even get to apply it to my jobs but this video letting me know that it’s not like the movies, I don’t need to know how to hack or code took such a weight off my shoulder because getting into it and studying for my cybersecurity+ certification I’ve never been in this tech field and everything I’m learning rn is the start but it’s so hard I just kept losing motivation

I believe a security engineer needs to have knowldge and understanding of the system they are protecting. In the security space, I hear a lot of senior experts saying that a lot of new cyber security personnels coming into the space are missing a lot of fundamental understanding like Networking, OS familiarity, basic knowldge of protocols and their roles (port 53, 21, 80, 443 etc.) Cloud fundamentals etc. IMO, you cannot protect what you dont know and I would not trust a mechanic to work on my car if they have no experience working on car. Therefore, why should I trust a cycber security engineer to protect my network when they have no basic or intermediate knowldge of networking?

I do have a really good question though, if I later wanted to get into a cyber security field and get a manager position, or other high paying position, I would need at least a bachelors degree right? Also, wouldn’t I get paid more if I had a degree too?

Uh... I'm not sure I can fully agree, not fully disagree on saying no, or enabling success. A security analyst can and should say no when doing so is appropriate, and that does happen. Some things are hard nope. That said, finding alternatives is part of the job, but not exactly the security analyst job. The analyst job is to have a security policy, and determine if the item under review would violate policy. The policies should already imply or entail what needs to happen to move forward. Security analysts are not software architects.

Go CCNA instead of Network+ when you're ready for the networking side - David Bombal, CCIE, is also a solid resource and has a bomb YT channel. Super Important: Learn Python and Javascript now. They'll make it to where you can automate a lot of repetitive tasks and data scraping. Most Important: Stay far away from anything this dude on this channel tells you. There is no shortcut to being a rock solid IT pro. And he's out of his mind telling people that they can be IT auditors without knowing anything about IT. LOL 😂
