Cool projects are rare. Here I found one I want to show to you. An off-grid personal communicator. It includes a lot of new technologies: ESP32, Smartphones, LoRa, BLE, GPS, Mesh, and as you see, 3D printing. And it solves a problem that could be seen as a human right: Personal SMS style communication everywhere in the world, without the need for any infrastructure, and without mass surveillance. In addition, it shows the location of all your friends in your group on a map on your Smartphone. Everything open source, of course. How cool is that? Even "Sexycyborg" Naomi Wu likes it.

Years ago, I thought "There's gotta be a way to invent a cell phone that doesn't use service providers, does its own transmitting and receiving, and the more people in an area that had them, the better they would work. If ONLY I knew SQUAT about electronics...."

There was a Tv series a few years back where people were always watched and analysed by a computer linked to all cameras and phones. It sent messages to this person about saving certain people. When the competing bad computer was launched, good guys had to use this type of network to communicate. Since LOS was required nodes were set on the rooftops. Might have been this tech that fueled this idea. I thought how handy this would be in a surveillance state.

@@2bczar4u The idea is fundamental enough in of itself that surely many people have had it long before it started to get traction. I thought of a similar approach to a distributed internet when i was in middle school. Ideas are only as good as the resources available to implement them.

Japan has a Constitutional ban on military secrets - so you should be able to operate a very broad band relatively powerful HF CDM, which would be undetectable, and even if detected - it would still be legal - in Japan. From there, despite laws, people would export these units to more repressive countries - like the U.S. Once there are a few thousand of these units operating around the world, the genie would be out of the bottle and secure secret communication would be possible - which would be enough to topple repressive governments who don't clean up their act. THIS could change our world for the better. Keep up the good work.

Another thing I admire about japan is that the government seems to respect their constitution. The reason they didn’t shut down businesses and lock down is because the prime minister recognized that according the their constitution the government does not have the power to tell people what to do.

I am working on a new network protocol specification that includes encrypted tunnels as a core feature. The basic idea is to use latency measurements between hosts to derive addresses in several dimensions using basic gradient descent. The first node in a network becomes the origin, and every new node calculates and self-assigns an address encoding coordinates after gaining latency attestations from neighbors; all other nodes can then verify the address very quickly using the latency attestations. One of the benefits to this coordinates-as-address system is that routing becomes a matter of forwarding to the neighbor who has the lowest distance from the target address. How to make that an efficient look up is something I have yet to formalize, but I have outlined other things, like gaining guest address leases from hosts, bridging between networks, neighborhood gossip protocol, anti-spam policies, etc.

I got a couple of these for christmas and came back to rewatch some of your lora videos. They have improved the meshtastic firmware a lot. You can now connect them to your wifi and have them put messages (encrypted) into an MQTT server that is then picked up by all nodes using the mqtt server with the same channel name/key over the internet and rebroadcast. Basically, I could set up a node here in Texas connected to an MQTT server, you could set up a node in Sweden connected to the same MQTT server both with the same channel names/keys and I could send a message from my phone that you get delivered to your phone. All encrypted via the mesh network and sent over the internet. Out of the box with the stock antenna it gets good range. From a shelf in my house to the other one being on the dashboard of my car, I got 1km. Bet if I install a high gain antenna and put it on a mast I can get much further. Thanks for the great videos.

I've been in the decentralized community for a while. AtHoc networking is unreliable for the reasons you mentioned but also because lag increases with every hop regardless of distance. GoTenna mesh sought to solve this problem by allowing certain users to act as gateways and then its a matter of connecting gateways. The privacy issue is meant to be solved with encryption, but the low throughput of radio frequency usually encourages non complicated text data only. Althea mesh is more of a WiFi router and extender linking project and the mix of these two schools of thought (pocket radio and WiFi linked gateways) may be the best solution to a decentralized trust less network for we'll say protesters as an example.

Poor opsec to have it broadcast your location to anyone ever. There is no need for any of my friends to know where I am at any given time. I don’t even have find my iPhone on in the vague hope that it would be harder for someone to track me. When my boss showed me how he could see where his son, daughter, and wife were at any time I reconsidered why I need a smartphone. For now I still have it, but I sure don’t take it everywhere anymore. Now I keep a flip phone to make calls when I want to go incognito. Battery out and simple pay as you go plan. I love the idea of untraceable and uncrackable technology, but then y’all go and put a “here is all of your friends on a map” function like opsec doesn’t exist.

@@AndreasSpiess Sorry Andreas you are right, I misunderstood what I meant. I meant to use an app in addition to encrypt the text in Wirlpool, Serpent, encryption before sending it in the dedicated App in mesh communication. That's why I said to exchange the key at hand to avoid the transmission of the key in the network mesh. Such a technique is also used in Walkie-talkie radios with text messages. Basically the generated strings of the encrypted text are sent as a normal message. if a stranger looked at the message he would only see strange strings that make no sense

Joshua Williams While it will be easily decrypted by feds if they wanted too you would just have to go back to using code words for things. I’ve used radio SOP’s on un-encrypted frequencies that would take people a long time to decrypt. One paper on each end, for example: Resupply = AX21, Pick up point= AX45 etc. only need to encrypt key words and words that has essential meaning to the message. Group words in the same category together for easy decryption/encryption.

Hello Andreas. I'm watching from a long time to your videos and I enjoy your professional styles . Especially because I'm a professional board design engineer with a lot of experience and I'm working and designing complex pcb boards. I don't have the opportunity to write to you in order to express my admiration but now I have a question so I used the opportunity to say you how much I like your channel. So now the question. I like the idea of the project from this video and also I know the M5stack project. They have there a Lora stack and ESP32. And now they have a new kit, M5stack faces that look very close to a communication device. So from what I understand will be now problem to make the Lora mesh communication with a M5stack faces and added Lora stack. So what you think about this idea ? If you think it can be possible maybe you can do a video about what to order and how to assemble and program a device like that. What you think about it?
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
The Meshtastic projects supports several architectures (this is easy with PlatformIO). So you for sure you have to define the pins used for the LoRa module and maybe change the LCD, if M5stack uses a different one. But it should not be a huge task. All LoRa modulesw seem to be supported. For the moment I do not plan another video about tis project.
