In this video series, we are building a ground station for a geostationary satellite and try to talk to a guy in Antarctica. It is a bonus series and not directly related to the regular topics of the channel.
The last two weeks were rainy and wet here in Switzerland. I have the antenna outside, and I did not want to go there with my delicate equipment. That is why I still was not able to transmit a signal and receiving my voice from space. But I was not lazy!

Nice video! Leo Bodnar makes some really cool stuff which is why I was very surprised to see the distortion in the "square wave" GPSDO output. Was this due to improper termination? I can see you have the scope in 1:1 mode, but is it terminated into 50 Ohm like the GPSDO?
@AndreasSpiess

"If you were able to do it once, you do not loose it". I found this to be true, about 10 years ago, I used to play organ until 1978, left music for over 30 years, and then I got myself a second hand Yamaha Tyros keyboard. I wasn't able to remember anything about the song Tico Tico, I then put on the drum set and practically I played nearly 90% correct through my subconscious, there was no other possibility, because the song is too too fast to give you time to think what to do.

This series of videos have sparked my interest for RF again. Out of curiosity why didn't you opt for a tank (series or parallel RLC) circuit as you can achieve a quite good level of selectivity with the Q factor? I'm a teacher in electronics and recently had to thoroughly (to my level) investigate those kinds of circuits again and I must admit I appreciate them even more than before hence my question.

Hello Andreas, I still do not understand, what the requirements for your 25MHz and 40MHz reference frequencies are, high uncertainty (exactly these frequencies to the nth digit), or stability, i.e. low short or medium term jitter? If latter is the case you were better off with XTAL oscillators, as these have the lowest jitter, but GPSDOs usually have relatively high jitter, only high longterm uncertainty. Maybe a schematic of your modulation methods would be helpful, or a description, which transmission method is used.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
We want of course all three: Low jitter provided by a TCXO, high precision that we exactly hit the desired frequency, and longterm stability that we hit it next week, too. But of course, you can use very good TCXOs in both cases if you want. I always wanted to play with a GPSDO and here I have a good use case 😉

I had to do some googling: "Morse code was used as an international standard for maritime distress until 1999 when it was replaced by the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System." I thought it was abandoned long before that.

Commercially it was abandoned earlier and first replaced by RTTY. The red cross, for example used it also till the late 80s because it was an international standard and the red cross had to be neutral.

Hmm. You forgot that your taskbar was still in the video while recording it. So according to it, you just needed 1h30 to cut and upload it until i can view it. Impressive.

I thought maybe you had said you were divorced. You were talking about priorities in one of your videos. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for you having a great wife, but just curious.
