Isn;t there a fire hazard with the stove and chimney running thru the branches without any safety measures? Just wondering....
@upnorthof60
@upnorthof60 2 місяці тому
@@andyfee6125 it’s definitely something you need to keep eye but for the most part it’s not an issue. The entire structure was built with live green wood, which is quite difficult to ignite and would require more radiant heat than what the stove is capable of producing, in its current set up. Most of the heat radiates from the base of woodstove, and not so much from the chimney, especially the upper part that’s going through the shelter. The upper stove pipe is actually warm to the touch and will not burn your skin. For a long-term shelter I would’ve built something completely different. This is a quick wick up which works well for my intended use.

In the late 50"s my Dad and I were hunting near little Goose Creek in the Big Horn Mts, Wyoming when we were hit by a sudden storm with about 2.5 feet of snow. My Dad was a survivor of WWII and a great guy. We got under a blue spruce and he made a small fire which kept us warm since the snow made a blanket covering the tree. We stayed there 2 days, we had water and snacks and we were able to walk out after the wind abated.

Blue spruce are some of the best trees to find shelter under. They are so thick and usually are dry underneath even in rain. I have 5 on my property and they've always been dry in winter or rain

Absolutely fantastic! If it were me I’d collect the heaps and heaps of branches he cut off and layer them around the base of the tree house. Obviously you can’t make it weather tight, but you could put a few more layers between you and the snow.

Always loved the tipi design for a good and fast bushcraft shelter. A tip for standing up such long primary poles alone is to have the middle pole sticking back in the opposite direction on the ground when you tie them togther. Then when you walk up the other two, that third one will drag along behind you, propping the others as you go when you need a rest or when setting the two poles' ends apart. Plus, this will serve to further tighten the wrapping/frapping of the rope tie, as the third pole rotates through its over-90 degrees of arc.

Where is your Tabasco?? 3) The snow version of Dawn works extremely well. Down in the south, we use creek or river sand, but that snow and a bough worked great! Excellent tip! @upnorthof60
@upnorthof60 5 місяців тому
@wordsmth8 there’s a fine balance with determining how many calories you should expend building a shelter versus how many are required to keep you warm. This understanding comes from experience in these conditions and knowing your personal limitations. This shelter was more than adequate for what I needed. My primary shelter, which are the clothes I’m wearing and my secondary shelter, which is my sleep system is what provides me the warmth and shelter that I need. The tipi was just a bonus.

The impact of cutting 1 tree after cutting millions that were not replanted can hardly be inconsequential. However, at this point does it matter if he wants to cut a tree down for shelter? Could he have taken the bottom branches and used those against the tree for shelter leaving the tree alive and healthy while he could have a shelter? Probably but he wanted to cut a tree to look like a tree ok content!
