Trust is the biggest complexity killer. And one of the biggest assets. Why do I think so, and what is the relevance for you? Where to have to pay attention, where to change or set priorities for the future?

A nice summary and some very good points. Trust is essential in every transaction and interaction where something is exchanged for something else, offered or required. Hearing you speak about it has also reminded me I need to bake a trust model into my current project. So thanks for the inspiration.

Great video! Trust is something we are all familiar with but I love how u broke it down on many levels! A definition of trust, Examples of trustworthy groups and not so trustworthy groups, How to gain, How to lose, What it means to you, and why it's so important! Definitely different from ur usual maker focused content, but a great video regardless!!!!

Well, I have been also a customer of Ali for years. But since they have cheated me three month ago I'm afraid to use this service any more. The seller was a scam and provided a fake shipment info. It stated that the smartphone I have ordered was delivered 4 month earlier before I have even made a purchase. I have opened a dispute and ALI denied it just immediately though it was obvious that the seller was a fraud. I have tried to protest this dispute but with no vain. Ali just backs its thieves-like sellers.

True- large sections of society live off this atmosphere of distrust (afore mentioned lawyers). Complexity is preferred because because it sets up a massive grey zone that people can be dishonest in. Unlike clear literal communication where there is no doubt in meaning. I to love the simplicity of trust

I am not sure if a plan exists. I rather tend to believe that we forgot the Kennedy sentence : “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country,” Which automatically creates a lot of complexity because a lack of common standards (or beliefs)

Faith has no place in engineering and trust has some caveats. The big tech corporations have eroded trust with their destructive marketing polices. I refer to software engineered obsolescence, and the move away from buying products to buying services. Should we trust the technology companies with control over all the IoT devices which are becoming more ubiquitous by the day. Should we trust products, who's continued operation remains so dependent on the internet link to the manufactures site. How is this relevant to product reviews? Well engineering, and electronic engineering in particular is now only partly driven by improvements in technology and far more dependent on the needs of marketing. This policy shift is taking electronics down a road of dependency, driven by convenience. For example, it is very nice and convenient to be able to network all your expensive test gear together via a cable or wi-fi network. It is not so good when you find its continued operation is dependent on the continued support for a particular computer operating system, or more importantly a particular a version of it. Both professional and commercial products now have a life cycle defined, not by the quality of their hardware engineering, but by the willingness of the manufacture to continue to supply software support. The latter being in the control of the marketing department in question. Much of the test gear of an earlier age, before the software integrated environment, still working today. Much younger test equipment has been rendered expensive bricks, by the evolution of certain computer operating systems. I am sure you know which I mean. As engineers should we trust in the direction that the technology is taking us, particularly when the marketing departments are in the driving seat. Should we be happy to put our faith into the continued economic operation of remote server, just because they offload a lot of the data processing burden from local equipment. I contend that we are being beguiled to travel down a technological blind alley, which is essentially a trap set by the money men. A direction that damages the environment and will eventually stifle innovation, as consumers are forced to repeatedly buy the same functionality over and over again, because of the equipment's limited software engineered life expectancy. If you take a myopic view, the future looks bright, but can we really trust the technological path we are being tricked into following?
Nigel Johnson
Nigel Johnson 7 місяців тому
I think that when reviewing new devices and equipment, it is not sufficient to detail its functionality, but it is now necessary to examine its life cycle, and the impact of that life cycle on the environment. I take part in a focus group for a large computer manufacture. They ( who will remain nameless) wish to improve their green credentials, by making products that can be claimed to be more green by having a smaller impact on the environment. One idea suggested, no doubt by their marketing department, is to reuse electronic components for old equipment, sounds reasonable, until you understand that this limits the life of the new product. If companies want to save the planet, and reduce the electronic waste pile, the trick is to make more reliable designs that last longer. This frees up consumer cash, allowing the consumer to buy products with new functionality. For example, instead of buying a replacement printer, for the one the computer OS no longer supports, continue using the old one you know and love, and buy a new 3D printer. Just like most other IT devices, printers have a unique built in obsolescence, either the latest OS update no longer supports them, or the manufacture stops making the ink cartridges for them. It was actually suggested that new products might be made from recycled plastic, with the caveat, that this might lead to a less attractive and durable product. This was seen as a good thing, as it demonstrated green credentials and environmental commitment by the manufacture. Again the weakness is in the loss of durability. To add insult to injury, it was suggested that the consumer might be asked to pay a premium for this greener product. I maintain that consumers want increased durability not less. They do not want to pay more to retain the functionality they have already purchased. In the case of computer operating systems, not only are consumers being asked to pay the same product over and over again, but the later version seem to offer less functionality than the last. For some electronic products the adage is that "the improvement is no better".
Nigel Johnson
Nigel Johnson 8 місяців тому
@Andreas Spiess it is true that the price of test equipment has reduced, but that is not my point, it is the test equipment that is networked that is a problem, as the applications that drive it have a very short life, being so dependent on the operating system environment under which it operates. The result is that working hardware is consigned to the ever growing scrappy heap. There is something wrong with a technology that uses billions of transistors to turn on a room light, particularly when this involves requesting a remote server hundreds of miles away to switch on the light. The subject of the post was trust, and I certainly do not trust the corporate marketing departments to play fair. The technology is developing a dependence that can be later monetised, its a form of addiction. The consumer does not realise that they no longer own what they buy, they really only rent it, and at the whim of the manufacture, the product can be disabled, forcing the consumer to replace it. I am willing to bet that even your portable network analyser has a hidden form of built in obsolescence in its battery compartment. Does it use a standard battery pack, can the battery be replaced? For a low cost item, it may be free of such life cycle limitations in the design. Does it depend on a software application package to upload its display? If so how long will that application be supported?
Andreas Spiess

I am not sure if I can agree. I am 64 now and have the best equipment I ever owned in my life. And I did not have to spend a fortune. When I was young, 30MHz was a high frequency and now 1GHz seems to be like DC. Only companies were able to buy a VNA. Now everybody has one and get access to a lot of insight. When I was young I had a multimeter (you are right, it still would work) and I had to work a long time to buy a simple oscilloscope (which I still have but no more use because it stopped below 10MHz). Whether the "cloud" is a good or bad idea we will see. I started with mainframes and punch cards, implemented with the DEC company decentralized computing, and saw the revival of "host" systems with the internet... It will go away if something better is invented. And it will stay if it is useful. Who knows? I also can live with marketing, I am used to it. Actually much more than with "fake news" and conspiracy. Conspiracy seems to gain a lot of traction recently. Much more than marketing. If this is good for our environment is another question. My generation will probably not be loved by the children of my children. But I am optimistic that the new generations will find their ways. In 1945, Europe was more or less destroyed and 55 million young people were killed. Only 75 years ago...

Although quite "tangential" to Your normal subject matter I chose to view it because I trust Your channel :) And You did not fail, even though it didn't exactly present anything new, it was (as always) a very thought through and clear explanation, that without being overly lengthy and verbose explained the terms and concepts. And I found that I went away with a "clearer view" and more concrete and firm understanding of a "subject" that I already believed that I understood. So You have further strengthened my trust in You and Your channel by "under promising" (using a clear but "unassuming" title and thumbnail) and over delivered by the quality of the subject and presentation. So as always You have my deep gratitude for making and sharing Your excellent content. And also a massive kudos to all those that are Your patreons/patrons(?) for also making it possible. Interesting video. I don’t have much trust in Amazon due to a not insignificant amount of fake copies of products, as well as products that are faulty to the degree of damaging either what they are plugged into or be a danger to the user. I think most things are okay, but I don’t have the trust in Amazon to filter out the bad. I guess that’s the problem with selling almost everything. I have recently been thinking about trust (although I did not think of the word “trust” until this video) and have a increased appreciation of it lately. So I try to buy from smaller stores that I trust do their due diligence, and that I want to be around anyway, even at a higher cost.

Like you I built up some trust in Aliexpress, and ordered hundreds (possibly thousands) of items. Then one experience completely shattered my trust in aliexpress, enough that I avoid aliexpress now and pay extra to buy from Ebay. An item I ordered never arrived; in the past this was not a problem and I had a refund from the seller or they re-sent the item. This item had a tracking number and the tracking number said that the package was delivered to a different city, where I have never been before. The seller and I hit a stalemate when he said the tracking said delivered, and I said that I agree it says delivered, but the city is 400km away from me so it must have been a mixed up tracking number or other issue. This escalated to Aliexpress where I was sure with my evidence of the order being delivered to a different city, they would accept that as not delivered. They sided with the seller, because the seller provided a tracking number for a shipment and the tracking number says delivered. My thought was, that Aliexpress's trust was built when things worked (orders were received); as soon as something didn't work (this was my first time escalating a case to Aliexpress) they failed miserably. I subsequently cancelled my account once all other orders which were in transit at the time were received. I was fortunate that this order was one of the smaller amounts, so I only lost about 50€, but the experience soured me to the Aliexpress brand. I now pay slightly more via ebay, probably even from the same sellers.
Andreas Spiess

I also lost a few dollars over time. But I won thousands of dollars comparing with "western pricing". So I am still on Aliexpress. Also I do not find the things I need on ebay or Amazon. Maybe this will change over time.

Even though I do not know you in person, I would probably take your advice in a very big life decision if you provided advice. This sounds very strange but I am 40 years old and I know that my judgement is very good, because I am analytical, and so my judgement about who to trust is also very good. So when I meet other analytical people, who are able to show that they don't have any bad intention, I am extremely likely to trust them. I search a lot in UKposts and find many videos from people in Asian countries. Some play with Arduino sensors and make silly statements and silly claims, they cut their videos very suspiciously in a way that makes you think "you are making something fake", and they play stupid music and have silly graphics. Channels often have names like "Creative xyz" or "Electronics Tutorial" or whatever. I try to keep an open mind but every time it's the same: Japanese voices always speak with authority and Indian voices often (not always of course) on youtube tend to show a lack of rigorous application of analytical thought... often wanting to "appear" like they are succeeding in showing you something but not really. I watched one just now, and then noticed the youtuber wrote in his own comments a notice to companies to send him things to test! This quickly added to my judgement of him! I continue to try to make sure I am not being biased against people from certain countries and I keep watching with an open mind. I was not brought up with a racist mindset, this is my own judgement from what I see regularly. I thought this viewpoint might be interesting, because I think it shows I understand that "clan" can be deceptive and there are people in ANY country in the world who are the same as me... but it is certainly harder to find in certain far away countries (e.g. India), and easier to find in other far away countries (e.g. Japan or China).

This video addresses an important idea of old times, trust. We live in a digital era, these ideas don't matter now. My boss has a great trust in his belief that i am a man not to be trusted. So there is some "understanding" But i think we humans are wired that way. And regarding "clones" i believe over a period of time, clones beat the original brand in maturity utility and importance ukposts.info/have/v-deo/pqp2YZyKn2-Yt6s.html especially so when the original doesn't know what to do..and overprized ukposts.info/have/v-deo/epRyeoBkaG-rzYk.html And like aliexpress, banggood did not let me down, after more than a month of no information, my altera cyclone iv clone board arrived, although i haven't tested it yet. And i hope it should work like the original. Although it is behind the Virtual world, its still the human spirit that makes things work the way they should, rather the way humans want them ukposts.info/have/v-deo/nWSil2yqn2mUrGg.html although it appears the other way www.indiatoday.in/technology/features/story/should-i-delete-whatsapp-account-can-it-read-private-messages-and-other-key-questions-answered-1757960-2021-01-11#:~:text=Question%20%2D%20Should%20I%20delete%20WhatsApp,be%20active%20on%20the%20platform.

I think importance of trust was more earlier before the invention of market economics and computer networks. A little back in history breach of trust led to "watershed" moments for the course of events. For example, one of generals of the maratha empire took switched sides and they lost an important battle: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/q6aThadqpq-hxmg.html Today, the policy makers, politicians are "goal" oriented rather than process (trust) oriented ;-) Methods are not important. Likewise, tech-companies are "algorithm" driven ukposts.info/have/v-deo/sX1znrCtfoBjl2Q.html So trust is not the "driving" force. Likewise SAP in my organization works on ideal "calculations" any deviation is required to be corrected by humans. Unfortunately it works on Gigahertz scale, us humans in hertz. This means human element is not very important. Anyway, my boss is changed so process will also be changed. So maybe trust will be back..But we are turning out to be a nation of mobile apps. So now we are all driven by computer algorithms. Whoever is unable to match is gone. From the above comment i can infer that James Bond is a commodity and its clone Johny English is a clone and we its consumers. Clone johny was better than james... Our nation is not very good at managing complexity. After invention of bollywood, they even made generals of important empires appear dancing maybe they could not manage the logistics of the situation or perhaps, we trust whatever we see with conviction? ukposts.info/have/v-deo/rmKKp4OrhIWikn0.html
Andreas Spiess

I am not sure if trust depends on the era. Maybe it is created differently, and maybe there is more or less of it available. I even think trust is used in many very different civilizations because it seems to be a very human concept. BTW: Clones beating originals usually is called "commoditization" where things become commodities. A very important concept to manage complexity.

AliExpress is great for us buyers, I wonder if the small sellers in China are so happy with it? Whenever I've had a dispute, AliExpress has always ruled in my favour, I've had many disputes over the past six years. Unfortunately this behaviour makes the small sellers vulnerable to unscrupulous buyers, that can claim something didn't work when delivered. They many have a lower level trust in AliExpress, but have a limited marketplace to sell their goods, so have to accept it.

This should later send data to the Home Assistant via WLAN. From your videos I come to the conclusion that the hardware required is an INA3221 new model with 2 x ground and an ESP8226. Because I installed an inverter in the mobile home, currents of up to 200A can flow (2400 watt inverter). So I'll have to work with an additional shunt. I hope I'm right so far. Since I have no experience with microcontrollers, I definitely need a circuit diagram for dummies! Can you give me any help? My email address is womo4us@gmail.com. I would be very happy to receive a reply. Sincerely, and stay healthy. T. Schwarzer

I'm not sure it's a "tribal" thing with regard to the Chinese. Heck, my wife is Chinese and *she* doesn't trust things made or sold in China. I think it stems from no accountability and certainly their track record. Remember the melamine in the pet food?

Thanks for this nice video ! I have a question : In case where you seems to be a perfectionist, having trust is more difficult. Because, 95% of people will often answer the same thing : - Do you really need this feature ? (in my opinion, it is so obvious) - This is too complicated. - You ask too much questions. (I hope the NASA do it before sending a human in Space) - etc. And the result is : In 80's my trust level was high. Nowadays, lot of product have a limited life time (I mean about "planned obsolescence"), not practical to use, not practical to repair, have lot of bugs, etc. Therefore, this is not easy to have trust in someone or a product.

I personally like the mailbag videos, but despite the fact you get to showcase your Swiss knife would rather like to see most stuff already unpacked and mention what it is and why you bought it (I sometimes ordered the same stuff already before you or on the flipside order something because you recommended it ~ trust as you say :) ) You gave me a great boost at re-starting with my electronics hobby and I learned a lot from your videos with regards to esp stuff... (meanwhile I also experimented a bit with attiny's etc ... ) Before aliexpress I ordered a bunch of junk from dealextreme mostly but never looked there at circuits with microcontrollers etc... (now I almost always order from aliexpress, sometimes banggood, never looked back to dealextreme) It was only by reading something about hacking an amazon dash button, figuring out circuits with esp's could do that and your video about power consumption and deep sleep with esp8266 that I actually rolled into this whole electronics scene again (electronics was my first education, I am a IT system engineer through later eduction and mostly into the linux or free and open source software area... to which free and open hardware is a nice addition my idea :) )

Trust is directly related to observed quality. Ronald Reagan pointed to a proverb:. "Trust, but verify.". It's easy for me verify this is a quality channel. Generally you hit subscribe when instantly recognize quality and stop watching or unsubscribe when you are disappointed or bored by content. Totally agree about UKposts Premium. They should promote it more, perhaps with affiliate links as yours is the first channel that I recall mentioning its value.
Andreas Spiess

I have lost all trust in AliExpress due to shipping and billing problems coincident to the pandemic. The 90 day extension for shipping was very unfortunate and trust breaking and Paypal issues that converted charges to cash advances ate into any cost advantages without warning. I have shifted to Ebay and Amazon as supplier middle-men because I have lost this trust.

It is very possible to lose them however. These 2 very special things are: trust and respect. The ONLY way you can obtain these things, is to earn them." ... @Andreas Spiess You both make a good point. We are often manipulated by companies, as you suggest ... but is this really 'trust?' I think the true test of trust, is what happens when it is violated. Recall for example: the Starkist tuna scandal. Starkist, a very large fish processing company, once defied health inspectors by repackaging a batch of rejected tuna and they were caught doing it. What happened next was unhinged public outrage, which almost killed the company. We are all consumers and have no choice but to buy things. So not knowing any different, we often make purchases based on marketing and branding. Whether we stick with these companies however, will very much depend on how they treat us.
Andreas Spiess

On a personal relationship, trust only can be earned, I think. But I agree with Peter on a "institutional" level. This is what I wanted to show also in my video with Federer.
Peter Gamache
Peter Gamache 8 місяців тому
Sadly, it isn't true for trust. As this video asserts (correctly), trust is a commodity that can be purchased - companies use testimonials and celebrity endorsements all the time. Repeat a slogan often enough and it becomes "common knowledge", even if untrue. These are ways to exploit people's biases to create a sense of trust ... earned or not. The twin occupations of public relations and lobbying (aka government relations) revolve around the manipulation of trust and respect for profit.

Naivete brings up a good point. Maybe I'm just lucky, but people don't seem to lie about most things. I've found it's just easier to take what people say at face value and assume truth, at least until I know better. It's burned me once or twice, of course -- there's a bad apple in every bunch, as they say. But generally, it helps with getting to the root of a problem, or learning something someone's trying to teach you. Great video!

Many youtube video makers obtain income from affiliate purchases. Follow a link from a video to AliExpress or Amazon and the video maker gets some coin. The more expensive the product, the more coin. Andreas knows you don't make anything off of pointing vendors selling hookup wire kits, or 2N7002's. You should also beware of people who point you to expensive items, such as LiFePO4 whole house batteries.... To that end, facts builds trust far faster than opinion. So keep up with excellent fact based videos, and your patron based funding model. Greatly appreciated.

Hi Andreas, I'm a new subscriber - Your QO-100 video's brought me here as I'm building an up / downlink system. I've really enjoyed watching your video's, thank you! Anyone who ends a video with a purring happy cat has my trust ;) And Swiss! I'm on the fence with Chinese goods - I personally think that Chinese are brilliant at making things and harnessing leading edge manufacturing. They can for example take a design for a product such as a VNA and put it into production and you get a brilliant product. On the other hand, if you go for a Chinese designed and manufactured transceiver, it's going to be painful. Cheap but never hits the sweet spot of a really excellent buying experience - but you get what you pay for. I've had similar experiences with Chinese semiconductors; something not in the datasheet more often than not becomes evident and to the same extent with Chinese software. I'm sure that given time they will get these things right as the Japanese did in the 70's.
