From the book The Kite Runner: "There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft... When you kill a man, you steal a life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your diligence and work you have put into this channel for years. I also happen to be one of your followers who found some of the inspiration here in Turkey to restart my electronics and home automation hobby after many years, having fun, creating useful stuff, and regaining a newfound sense of self-worth and accomplishment along the way. One thing I'd like to mention is the social aspect. Living in a high-trust society like Switzerland gives one the privilege of being able to trust others more easily and a higher likelihood of enjoying the benefits as you have. For others in other places, it might be a bigger gamble.

BMW I do not trust. I have more trust in Toyota. Proven samplings of reviews by a specific brand that is measured in a large scale favorable light creates trust. Finding ones own truth and not accepting everything you are told as fact creates trust with the unknown. Not a bad survey at all on this topic and much appreciated, especially in these times of skeptical darkness. Thanks be to your idears and please keep sharing. I’d like to think not many commercials or youtube channels influence me in a substantial way. You are the exception and it has allways been a good experience. If i need some engineering advise or a point of view on something i usually think “what will the guy with the Swiss accent have to say about this”. You really do add something to the table and i trust the “Swiss accent” brand. Not doing any midroll commercials is also very much appreciated. I have been annoyed much by youtube lately and unsubscribed from some channels that run more than 3 commercials in 10 minutes. What a pleasure to watch without any rude interruptions! Wish you all the best in 2021!

Very good observation. On the other hand, blind trust leads to cults like trump. We have to trust, true, but we have to learn how to find truth systematically and then trust. Most people when asked how they find truth they only say „there are many philosophies“ which is not an answer to the question. I think this is why many people can be manipulated to enter a cult, at least under pressure. I begin to trust when I observe when people are, just like you Andreas, „unnecessarily fair“ or precise or when they disclose things that seemingly go against their assumed interest. I trust more if the seller points out a deficiency. I trust more when there is only minimal advertisement. I also trust when I see someone playing. Being able to play means your mind is at rest, you have no worries. That means you are free, under no pressure. Benevolent work thus is a very important creative source for society that we should respect and honor more. Play also simplifies things and / or finds efficient ways. At the end of the day, it is called an invention or innovation. Thank you again for your work that always gives.

Interesting thoughts. The motivation behind a person was always important for me. One of my first questions usually is: What are you paid for / how is your salary calculated? I usually get an honest answer and we can try to find a way to fulfill both needs. But of course, it works not always.

Although quite "tangential" to Your normal subject matter I chose to view it because I trust Your channel :) And You did not fail, even though it didn't exactly present anything new, it was (as always) a very thought through and clear explanation, that without being overly lengthy and verbose explained the terms and concepts. And I found that I went away with a "clearer view" and more concrete and firm understanding of a "subject" that I already believed that I understood. So You have further strengthened my trust in You and Your channel by "under promising" (using a clear but "unassuming" title and thumbnail) and over delivered by the quality of the subject and presentation. So as always You have my deep gratitude for making and sharing Your excellent content. And also a massive kudos to all those that are Your patreons/patrons(?) for also making it possible. It seems some other channels have become more about the amazon affiliate link (earning commission) rather than the content.

Hello Andreas, I also wish you all the best for 2021! I can confirm that your videos have indeed reduced the complexity in my life - or expanded the possibilities, which only works if the complexity does not increase to the same extent. E.g. I watched your videos about "weather balloon hunting" several times, then ordered some parts from Aliexpress and in fact now have my own receiving station in operation. Since I had to find out that the universal antenna supplied with the RTL-SDR is practically useless, I ordered the Nano-VNA also mentioned by you in this video and built my own groundplane antenna. The result is excellent: with clear visibility I now receive probes at a distance of more than 80km. I also built the mobile ESP32-TTGO search module. Also with a self developed antenna with very good range. But so far no balloon had landed near me, so it is still waiting for its first use. Then I got fully into MQTT, running my own MQTT server with Node-Red as well as a whole zoo full of Tasmota devices. Here I'm still at the beginning, because there are so many possibilities and I can't and don't want to convert the whole house at once. What I always wanted to do was to get into microcontroller programming. And not only on the level of just flashing e.g. Tasmota. I want to develop my own sketches. The software part is easy for me, because software development is my job. The hardware part I learned primarily also your videos. Currently I am working on an extended version of your "people detector" based on the Wemos D1. The whole thing is a good exercise for the start. I'm working with PlatformIO and CLion as editor and I'm surprised how easy it all is (=> less complex than expected/feared). Last but not least, I have a project in mind that I want to make some UKposts videos about as well. I've never made YT videos before, but have the hardware and software to do so from another context. So the technical barrier to entry for filming is relatively low. In terms of content, I want to do and film a very specific project: it's about remote telemetry for cars. I want to build a solution that replaces the mostly expensive and poor solutions that exist for keeping a logbook to prove business car trips ("Fahrtenbuch") with a smart and very cheap maker solution. My research shows that it should be feasible. Currently I am still waiting for some hardware components. When these arrive, I'll start filming. I have ideas for 3-4 videos. The goal of the video series should be to replicate the whole thing and build your own telemtrie solution (cloud-free). Okay, the message has become really long. I think you realize what you have "done": You have enriched my life. Thanks for that!
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
You are welcome! And this "Fahrtenbuch" device is a very good idea! With a GPS it should be possible. So You just have to press the "private" or "business" button before your start.
@VolkerKtnbch
@VolkerKtnbch 3 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess Yes, I will build it as a OBD2-plug which connects to the CAN-bus of your car, so it will not only have GPS but the milage of your car at the beginning and the end of the trip as well. The latter is needed by the beloved Finanzamt and there are STM32 chips that have CAN already on board. I'm planning to build a simple cloud-microservice so that device can upload the data directly to a google sheet - just like you entered it by yourself in the sheet. You can buy solutions like this, but they tend to be very expensive - for the good ones you have to pay each month 25€ per car and inflexible (closed shop). I'm pretty sure I can do it for 25,- once (for the hardware).

I would be interested in how you hack the can bus protocol. Maybe you contact me on Twitter or messenger (if you want, of course)

I often watch older videos from your beginning period and I notice quite an evolution in content, experience and trust. Btw, I do like the mailbag videos, it often gives a nice overview about new products. A small suggestion about trust and brands... as a Swiss guy... what about the trust people have (worldwide) in the Swiss army knife... ! It would have fit perfectly in the video... ;-)

Interesting thoughts, how the two topics trust and complexity get connected here. Being involved in influencing an branding, I am working with this all the time, but I never saw this presented in this focused way. This inspires me to touch these topics in one of the next issues of my regular magazine column (of course with mentioning where I got the inspiration from), maybe going the other way round: how complexity (something that cannot be easily understood) often causes mistrust, at least at the first look.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
I suggest to distinguish between complexity and complicatedness. Complexity is needed for a good solution and the customer is willing to pay for it. Complicatedness is above that. It has no value for the customer or even destroys it (as you write). If you take out complexity, your product becomes less valuable. If you take out complicatedness, your product becomes cheaper (and maybe better).

What I could do only within funded research projects for 100k$ or more, I can now easily pay out of my own pocket. And through channels like yours, I can plan and build all parts myself and save the friction communicating with workshops, where I often get wrong or crazy overdesigned solitions. Great video, thanks Andreas! In practice, trust for your brand is reinforced if a customer comes at you with a problem related to your product, and you help them resolve it (that's been shown in studies). They then become more trustful of your brand (in a way that you couldn't buy). Trust in life is probably the form of trust that transcends them all. I've converted to Catholicism recently, and even though you can't measure faith, it is an extraordinary contribution to life, as it helps understand how this chaotic and crazy world out there makes sense. Metaphysics is very real!
