Fantastic amount of goodies! Nice job as usual Andreas! I'm always amazed the amount of knowledge you demonstrate and it is infectious to me every time. But I can't keep up with you at all! I have most of my Tesla Coil done, I'll make a video before testing it - I'll do it outside the house and drive couple long rods into the ground as per recommendations from several websites and the manual. Thank you Andreas for your videos, ideas and products demonstrations!
@AndreasSpiess

You are right. Better protect you before you are harmed! These coils produce quite high voltages, and, depending on your design, can be dangerous.
@tonysfun
@tonysfun 3 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess YES! I am not usually scared of high voltages, but this Tesla Coil gives me much more than pleasure! It is a very dangerous project and I'll test it outside, after dark, so I can see if there are any unwanted plasma or some other discharges in places there shouldn't be any! It would be nice to have someone in Lincoln, Nebraska who made at least one or two larger Tesla Coil projects, so he/she can double check my work. On Sundays we have meeting over the Internet and in person here in my labs and Howard came today - he want to make one of these, it is his dream to make one, so I hope he gets some practical experience by touching all the parts I've made so far. Thank you Andreas for reminding to me how dangerous it is. I'll post video on my channel when I'll run a test.

Hi Andreas, This was a special mailbag, so many goodies! I use the Walmart equivalent of that knife, and yes they are awesome. The displays and processor kits you covered, wicked. It not just interests makers, but for engineers who need to solve low volume or one off problems there are so many solutions these days. Because there is pluggable hardware available with high level software solutions which means less leg work to the result, it means efficient and powerful end products. Be it hobby or commercial, we have such nice stuff to do with these days. I want to try that ESP32 with the lcd. I have a Waveshare 4 inch LCD on an Uno, but one has to very aware of the speed of the Uno and the time taken to process each pixel to be written to the Lcd. So it's an easy introduction to writing graphics to lcd's, and a great way to learn how that type of structure works, but it has the speed limitation and it will teach you how to code properly. A charmed life we lead. Thanks for the mailbag, I loved this one! Kind regards, South Africa
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
You are right. We get lots of stuff. But also the time to solve problems is reduced... I see that the industry more and more adapts Raspberries and Arduino stuff for fast prototyping or small series. I read that the Pi foundation sells more than 50% of their products to industrial customers...

One application for small pocket devices with display is a MFA (TOTP) Token. If it has a RTC and some interactivity it could replace the commercial tokens, they all have the problem that they do not support multiple accounts and don’t allow to program the seed.

@@AndreasSpiess I havent seen a good OSS software project for this (mcu target) yet, so I was somewhat low key waiting for a good device (ideally where I dont require 3d printing:) to start one. For example the Watch you showed looks fine (especialy if you can also remove the wrist straps). For me it is like i would like to get rid of the Authenticator Codes in a Mobile application and have a dedicated non-networked device. There are some credit card sizes tokens out there, but most of them are not programmable or they allow only a single code. I need more like two dozent. And I can imagine I am not the only one who would use that. So I am looking for your more detailed reviews of those small devices with display you had in the mailbag. The size of a pocket watch would be fine for me (initially I thought about using my smart watch for it and I might do that onse I have one who has more capacity) but for now a second device would be the solution I prefer. There are some good threads on SwedeSpeed on how our XC90's CAN network is designed (I have a XC90 too). One forum member detailed his reverse engineering of the P2 Volvo's on a BlogSpot if you some Google searching. You'd have a lot of fun with a DICE unit and VIDA. It's a must have for doing any work on a Volvo (especially with anything CAN related).
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
Thank you for the info. Unfortunately, my Volvo is too old and has no such gadgets :-( I think we have to start with the available sensors (e.g. on ebay) and find somebody with the appropriate car. The CAN bus part is probably the smaller part. I am more concerned about the programming/reading of the sensor itself.
@atomikrobot300099
@atomikrobot300099 3 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess Yes, you're totally right how it's sad our XC90s although great don't have modern sensors (even though they are an amazingly engineered vehicle). Even more is the how the high speed CAN bus isn't as easily hacked with as the low speed CAN bus. You could "easily" have a radar sensor connected to an Arduino+CAN board sound the built in DIM red "!" LED/chime, write whatever data you want to the DIM LCD screen or use the mirror adjustment joystick as a up down left right input for something. Others have set up double presses of certain ICM buttons to do special functions like start a timer. Almost every button press on the XC90 is on the low speed CAN bus and can be actioned over the CAN bus. Check out all the features of the "CFE+ Wi-Fi" module for ideas of all the "custom" feature you can add to the XC90 (auto turn on heated seats when it's below a certain temperature, auto close windows, auto fold mirrors when locking, display technical engine data in the LCD screen, etc.). @@AndreasSpiess You might be right (well, maybe as a JTAG adapter). Although, one can get those cheap FT232H (or 2 channel FT2232H) based boards, add them optocouplers and make essentially the same HW. Basically, those chips alone buffer fast communication from and to USB and bit bang it to and from GPIOs or to the pins over the built-in MPSSE unit. Hence you can interface USB to UART, JTAG, I2C, SPI, CAN or virtually any protocol meeting clocks and pinout. So you can turn it into a programmer, simulator, very basic logic analyzer, etc... Well, and that's why the crucial part are SW tools, as how these chips behave is entirely upon SW. And to be honest, nobody would like to debug e.g. SPI device over a command line tool :)

Hey Andreas. I have been trying build a small GPS Tracker LoRa Node, but I couldn't find a small (usually 1.6x1.6mm) 868MHz LoRa module with a Hirose U.FL connector. All of the small modules with an U.Fl connector are 433MHz, and not 868MHz. Do you have an idea why that is? Having to add a external U.FL connector would increase the PCB's size. Right now, I got the PCB to less than 4x2cm small, with a 433MHz lora module, that has the connector onboard. Also, Thanks alot for everything including your useful AND interesting videos.

I noticed your comment about the Maker Pi Pico board having LEDs to show the status of the GPIO pins. I'm a software guy, so this question may appear naive... may I still use a GPIO as an output if it has an LED attached to it? I would like to use GPIO 2 on an ESP development board as a chip-select output to an SPI bus device, even with it having an LED attached. Would that work? -Frank
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 роки тому
Maybe you watch my video about the usable pins on the ESP32. GPIO2 has some limitations. All depends on the load for the pin. An LED takes a few mA which cannot be used for other purposes. But if you only plan to attach a chip it should be ok.

The link to PK P8 watch is for a watch that shows as P6 in the bluetooth device list and can only be paired after specialized software is installed. It does not get recognized with DaFit app and also not with DaFlasher that is discussed in the third party video link. Maybe I am missing something but it appears the only way to get that device hacked would be to access internal pins or to expand the DaFlasher for this device. I assume if you can successfully pair the watch with native phone operating system you are good to go, but if the pairing does not complete and DaFit app from Google App store does not link with it then it's unlikely the flasher for third party firmware will work. It would be interesting to check out some of those inexpensive watches and compare their readings with expensive devices. As far as I know, one can not measure oxygen saturation with a watch that only has green light and so far I have not seen any scientific papers that shows how to extract blood pressure from optical readings but this watch produces such values in the display. It also gives heart rate that seems to be off. It might be fun future video to hookup some watches, maxim pulse ox breakout board 3010x and compare to medical device.
