Even with 5G I still struggle to see how this can be any different...if the hotspots become cheap enough surely a service like The Things can provide the same level of coverage either for free or a minimal cost, what would be the need for a blockchain? Do I really want to hook up my 5g phone to a blockchain network that chews through my battery? Monthly data plans are already cheap for consumers, what extra benefit would I get from participating in Helium aside from the promise of wealth generated through a ponzi scheme?!
@ErikMeike
@ErikMeike 2 роки тому
Very nice video! I ordered a hotspot in December and they promised to deliver it around March, and still have not received it despite it now being almost June. I did eventually decide it was a Ponzi scheme and thought I would be able to get something out of it, but am far less sure now especially with the halving coming up soon. In the meantime I just bought another LoRaWAN gateway and got it all set up and running with months to spare and am noticing that it is getting clogged from all of the Helium POC packets in my area.

I assume this network will use a lot of capacity of the ISM bands in crowded areas. A viewer even suggested, the FCC could investigate in this use case. That would be interesting...

Great video, especially at the end. One small point, Semtech, the LoRaWAN protocol owner is not a French company. It is headquartered in Camarillo, California and is listed in the Nasdaq exchange. All the major holders are U.S. institutions like Blackrock and Vanguard. Perhaps you were thinking of SigFox, the protocol owner for a rival long range system. SigFox is a privately held French company.

@kekagiso
@kekagiso 2 роки тому
The concept of it is actually not a bad idea, I just couldn't understand why a new currency needed to be created (well I see now why) but you could argue that there could be a ligitimate case for rewarding gateway operators somehow.
@canwenot573
@canwenot573 2 роки тому
You certainly could argue that, and blockchain/crypto makes a good medium to do that. However, the execution in this case pretty clearly resembles a ponzi scheme. Given, as he said in the video, how little the network as a whole was able to make from data transport and how they no longer allow people to build their own gateways(hotspots). I do agree that the concept is solid, especially as big data, cloud/edge computing and machine learning become more mature. There will likely be a number of applications for LoRa in these fields, and that inevitably means that someone is going to be paid to build/maintain LoRa infrastructure. Somehow, some way, there will be something of value exchanged for those services.
@miroslavbazitov183
@miroslavbazitov183 2 роки тому
Interesting discussion, I also think it is more like a ponzu scheme, but only because of the low usage of the network. I get that the authorised devices could have much to do with the security concerns, but this limited supply sounds fishy if the hardware is almost entirely off the shelf. They have also announced a 5G hot spot - only for the US, but that sounds likely to be heavily regulated. (I wouldn’t be happy if my neighbour points whatever antenna my way). It should also be mentioned that their investors own 30% of the tokens, it will be quite indicative if they offload etc. Otherwise even if it is a scheme at least it doesn’t burn KW :) and you are part of a global telecom for “just” $400
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 2 роки тому
@kekagiso: You are right. As I mentioned in the video. The idea was not bad for the capitalistic world we are. But now it seems it is out of their hands as Can we not wrote. 5G is heavy licensed (governments charge billions for licenses). So I cannot imagine it can be used the same way. This is a different animal than ISM.

That's the thing with those network ideas - it's the questionable use-case. Right now there is just not much LoRa use. But on the other hand - with a good functioning network - it might get more. And despite what you said in your video - that they had to pay 20k $ for PoC - they actually had to pay none - as they created their own currency (HNT) for 0$ and are paying their PoC with it. The value given to the currency is just speculation on the crypto market. It's questionable as it might go nowhere - but speculative - it could become the network with the most coverage & LoRaWAN could become the technology for IoT - then it might become a viable business. It's a game of chance and speculation - not necessarly a ponzi sheme.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 2 роки тому
We will see. 500 dollars turnover for a global network after a few years of operation does not make you think? Is the market demand really so big? Big companies like Deutsche Bahn build their own network because it is quite cheap for the places they need.
@samreciter
@samreciter 2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess I totally agree - it's obvious that the demand is not there (yet). And i assume they even use their own stock of HNT to pay for their bills. Although they sure get some kickback from the Helium hardware too. I would not invest in it myself - at least not long term - as i see the chance as very low. But it's how alot of those new companies work - completely investing in a possible future with f# high risk - trying to be the first of something. I agree with your assesment of the company - but it's hard to tell if they really believe in themselves or really just putting up for the ponzi sheme =)

I use the LoRa radios for my home projects, with my own private gateways, based on your past videos. They certainly outperform the nrf24 and nrf905 radios and use the Radiohead libraries. When I first saw the Helium "Peoples Network", I immediately thought about the data transfer and who the hell would ever use such a network. If you're tracking grocery carts or even water meter readings using LoRa, as a company you would implement your own gateways. The "crowd funded" approach is indeed a ponzi scheme and all the hardware vendors are making a killing on the vapor hype. Some are hitting $650 for the hotspots. What a gimmick. @@AndreasSpiess Ah I am beginning to figure you out! As you suggested in a reply to older videos with Lora and LoraWAN, I have been watching many of these Lora-related topics. Clearly, in this video you are telling us to take profits on our piles of Dogecoin (sometimes referred to as piles of dog poop), and also take out a second mortgage to buy HNT. Why? Because I want the sports car, Lear jet and super-yacht. There's a catch. I don't want to work or think. I just want to buy a sure thing. Everyone keeps warning me about exit scams. I don't get the big deal. When I was a teenager I often exited the theatre via the exit doors to be used in case of fire. I typically plan the scan as soon as I observe the theatre. No risk of an exit scam here because there'd no movie theatre with doors you aren't supposed to open. Hmm, I wonder if they'll let buy HNT on margin. Surely my broker will share my enthusiasm for a "sure thing." First, I have to liquidate my holdings of pet rocks, mood rings, cabbage patch dolls. I also collect Happy Meal toys. They are 100% authentic and preserved complete with burger and fries still in the box. Just practicing my own sarcasm. I would NEVER sell my original, in box, happy meals!

As for the Beatles - I recall my father commenting that every new Beatles track - was not as good as the one's that went before. The important thing was that they grew on you quickly over time - and then became classics. It was not an instant format that suited the program at the time (where pre-releases were unacceptable). I believe mining using “proof of coverage” is an interesting innovation in the crypto space. The fact that this mining algorithm is less energy intensive compared to something like “proof of work” while essentially performing the same task and also creating a usable network is something I like personally. It’s also nice to mention that Helium is expanding to 5G which could fix some of the lack of data transferred. On the other side, from an telecom business standpoint, the data transfer numbers at this point in time indeed look terrible… In the helium community it is often argued that it is only attractive for businesses to use the network when coverage is more consistent (so when more hotspots are deployed). But then again the data transfer would need to increase several magnitudes in order to pay out something significant to the owners, not looking good.

So the city council can for example monitor the traffic with the helium network. But you are of course right. The customers will not come to the network automatically. I think it's a necessary phase of a mesh network - sort-of Ponzi scheme phase. It's when the network is not yet big/viable enough to attract real users, but you have to somehow incentivize network growth. Here it seems it's done with introducing yet another cryptocurrency with a PoW of keeping a LoRa node. Now, if it won't collapse during this phase it could enter a phase when it's known enough to facilitate real users who willing to pay, and nodes start to earn money by serving users instead just existing.

Here is one which I look up to, it is an off-grid setup equipped with a 12dbi omni-channel antenna, Solar panels to drive the energy to run the miner/ portable broadband hotspot, linked with a Dragino LHT65 temp and humidity sensor to monitor the device. Quite an impressive setup, which I can share some pictures of. Its range is impressive, you can view it on the explorer map: Atomic Vanilla Locust Let me know your thoughts :).

For LoRa Bord Konzentrator there is 2 EU versions, 433 and 868 MHz Wich one should we use? From stomach feeling I would choose 433 MHz because am living in country side

If you have both Helium and TTN gateways covering the same area, do they just drop messages they receive but don't have an account for? Maybe you've covered this in a video, if so, please share.

Great video Andreas. Only thing I ask myself is how does Helium make money? As they have third parties selling their hard drive.

They can burn the investor's money and I assume they get a percentage from the gateway manufacturers. Maybe they also sold some HNT for dollars.

@@AndreasSpiess thanks for your answer, I think they might also take a small percentage of each reward they give you.
