4 Days of Freezing Temps In a School Bus. Lessons Were Learned.

Hey guys! In this episode we documented the process of fixing a major water leak and pipe bust. The temperature in Tennessee dropped down to -2 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees Celsius. Water unfortunately connected at the start of main drain pipe and busted it. With that came frozen water at the base of all of our drains leaving us with no way to get water out of our sinks. And of course no way to get water in since some of our pex plumbing has also frozen inside the bus. These things happen.

Using a hair dryer for a quick fix to get rid of ice😉, heat tape with foam wrap... Just Incase!! Happy adventures! Happy New year 23*

I hope so too! Just remember, if you have a run that level with the bus make sure the bus is slightly squatted in the back. Some people have two grey tanks though. They just put them directly under each sink. There’s always that idea. But if you do it similar to mine put a cap at the very front that you can screw on. It’s hard to tell but I have one of those. I just didn’t take it off before the temp dropped. That allows stuck water to flow out.

I have a block heater in my water tank that works real good when plunged in. The heat it gives off will travail all the way up as heat does all the way through your pipes. More than enough to keep it from freezing for very cheap.!

Loving the wit. Do they make any pipe insulation big enough for those exterior PVC drain pipes? Probably none designed for the undercarriage of a traveling skoolie huh? Just curious. Hope you are all having a wonderful new year. Curious if they make any tubing insulation for pex? I might have to google that. I wonder if wrapping it with reflectix would work? It doesn't get that cold here in the west so I've never had to worry about it.

You do have a few choices.. Empty your pipes (with a drain tap) before the weather turns on you.. Or insulation on the pipes, like a Geyser coat, foil blanket.. Also make sure no ice wind can pass under the bus when you park.. Life lessons are important, but we should really learn from them and adjust.

Hi, I did not understand everything, but our van has a heating for the greywater tank and also for pipes that are under the car. It doesn't need much Power supply, so maybe that would be something for your bus? But: -18c° is hard to find in Germany around christmas, even in the alps. All the best for 2023 and happy traveling.

We can but they’re drain pipes. Water shouldn’t be sitting in drain pipes. Obviously for us it was but just because the bus wasn’t level. Besides we don’t usually have to worry about freezing temperatures for very long. There’s maybe a couple of weeks a year where it’s really bad.

@@lifeanywhere I had my sewer pipe freeze and I live in a house and was supposed to have the right angle to drain it clear. I started putting heat tapes on it. But I live in Montana and it does get very cold here a lot in the winter.

I’ve been thinking about those for years now. I’ve pulled the wheels up on blocks before but it only helps so much because of the wheel travel in the suspension. But yes.. one day I’ll have a system.

Well, because they’re only drain pipes. Water doesn’t sit inside them. In our case because of how we’re sitting, water DID in fact just sit inside them and freeze. The pipes with water inside 24/7 are inside the bus. Drains don’t really need insulation.
