When spinning a wire brush in a drill press, always wear eye, and preferably full face protection. I speak from experience, people.

#2: My Bosch drill press came with a fence very similar to this. A pair of them is no match for a decent vise though. If they are not clamped together, you risk pulling the workpiece upwards when releasing the handle, ruining whatever you are working on and possibly the drill bit as well. Always make sure that whatever you are working on is secured to the table. Safety first ladies and gents!

Some really good and creative ideas there... A few things to keep in mind though. Drill chucks and drill press spindle bearings are not designed to take side (cross axial) loads. The drum sander attachment is a very creative idea, and it clearly works, but I wouldn't use your drill press in that configuration exclusively as it'll greatly shorten the life of your spindle bearings. This is especially true of the inexpensive (cheap) bench top drill presses out there. The double drill chuck idea is fantastic... As a few others have commented, clamp a short length of steel rod in both chucks before tightening down the drill chuck on the drill press table. This will align the table chuck to the spindle chuck much more accurately, allowing you to drill concentric holes more accurately. Again... Some really creative ideas here, just keep the limitations of the machine in mind.

When using a chuck on the work table, i'd recommend holding onto a pin with both chucks when tightening the table chuck to ensure concentricity between them.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects ukposts.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

My favorite, was the drill chuck mounted to the table. I can use that technique to put a needle valve in the float bowl bolt, and have adjustable running mixture in my engines. I live at a high altitude, and all my engines run too rich. That drum sander has its possibilities as well. Great video, thanks for posting! All very good ideas.

One of the best (in my opinion) and easiest upgrades you can do to these cheaper lightweight drill presses is to stick a small bottle jack under the front of it's table. Whenever you raise or lower the table just adjust the jack to snug up against the bottom of the table again. It takes all that flex out of it when you're putting a bit of force into drilling something, and it keeps the hole from going a few degrees off vertical.

Anyone else realize the word “amazing” these days is just a euphemism for “click bait”

This is SUPERB! I only have a little shed at the end of our garden but im slowly getting wood tools to convert my van into a camper. I have a table saw so far and loads of hand tools my Father left me. He was amazing at cabinet making and well....anything really. We lost him 2 years ago to the virus but hes taught me well. Your ideas will save me LOADS I wont have to buy a linisher or belt sander now. I also managed to score an antique drill press - but its built like a tank unlike modern ones! I use it with a moticing bit to cut slots its brilliant.

Just found your channel. I love all the use of wood for making tools/jigs as my old go-to for 'scrap' metal place no longer pulls out the good stuff to sell 'retail'. Buying new steel is expensive,and I can always find wood around my historic district neighbor hood. People are always putting old wood out on the curb from homes that were built in the late 19th and early 20th century. One person's trash and all that.

For the first one . The double Chuck setup. You gotta get that thing aligned using a piece of bearing rod or something before you start drilling. Very off center. But the rest of the ideas were really good

Too think I have done many of these operations on a mill for years (with significantly more setup time.). Very informative and efficient for projects that don’t need that accuracy and aren’t worth the setup time.

So you've got a drill press, hole saws, even a router, but not a 13mm spanner?

For that first one, if you put the drill bit in the bottom, (on the stationary chuck) and turn the screw or bolt (or whatever round shaft you are drilling the hole through) in the upper spinning chuck, the hole will self center and stay centered.

Thanks, man. Especially the first one (2nd drill chuck through the center hole) is a good one for me, as I have no low profile vise for my drill press stand yet. (Needed a way to - as you did - drill out the center of a bolt) The other ideas are nice as well - the 'vise' that's just 90° profiles. Might try that one too. I like your ideal with the drill chuck. Would be really nice to have a perfectly centered bolt or something like that to use use as a registration tool for the chuck when installing it.

The first one can be improved by reversing the drill bit & work piece. Put the drill bit in the table mounted chuck, and chuck the work piece in the drill. It will automatically self-center the resulting drilled hole.

All excellent uses for the drill press! May I ask what glue you use to secure the sand paper to the wood drum? It must be very secure, but also removable. Not sure what's glue is best. Hope you can tell me. Thanks much!

Good idea about fitting a chuck in PD base and using as a vertical lathe. Wouldn't recommend putting cutting tool in bottom check though as cutting oil will always run off tool. Better other way up. Brilliant idea the drum sander, I should patent that idea before someone else does. The cutting tool block would be better in nylon block , but you are a true craftsman, keep it up. 👍👍👍 BTW, buy yourself some spanners 😄

I like the fact you used a spotting drill bit to drill a half in deep hole in a bolt that bit is now junk

With #4 & #5, safety is needed when using a hole saw drill attachment. The saw could easily jam in the woodpiece and cause it to rotate yanking it violently out of your hands. You should always use some kind of clamp or guide (like in #2) to keep the piece stable.

If you are a complete maniac (and I am) you can use use it as a lathe with a sanding or cutting disk as the tool. I put circlip groves in a long nut to make it captive. Also made a ball on mine. *The main issue on the cheap ones is the table flexing and making off line holes. Wedge the end of the table up with a block of wood.

What your drill press needs more than any of these upgrades is a support for the table to mitigate the terrible sagging evident every time you use it. The greatest single benefit to using a drill press is to drill perpendicular with confidence that your hole is indeed perpendicular. This drill's sagging can only produce holes that are not perpendicular to the surface.

Great video. I'm a bit concerned at the very Last drill bit holder as working with a drill press depending what you drill say steel filings, timber dust will find their way to the bit holder. I'm not a fan of open drill bit holders. I prefer them closed so they don't pose potential danger from say cutting yourself or collecting dust.

Idea #1 - I'd suggest one improvement. Before fixing the lower chuck you may want to clamp a cylindrical object (e.g. a drill) in _both_ chucks together. This will ensure their concentricity. Idea #4 - you are only using a small part of your wonderful sanding drum. It will wear out in no time. Needs a way to use the whole surface more or less evenly. General: your support is visually bending under even a soft pressure from above. I'd suggest to fix this.

7:15 great idea about making a drum sander BUT you shouldn't have glued the top on your dust collection box. You're not stuck with only using that small portion of the sand paper. You should have made a clamp to attach it to the post of the drill press so you could move it up and down on the drum. That way you make full use of the entire drum.

The best thing you can do for a home shop drill press to work metal is...SLOW DOWN THE SPINDLE! I did mine by using a second motor, with a separate switch, connecting the two pulleys with a v-belt, and switching on the second motor (while the original motor is off) for drilling steel, and the reverse for wood. Amazing (click bait) how much the slow speed helps! Also, won't burn up or break drill bits so easily. You're welcome.

First of all, I was “delighted” with these hacks. Second, I agree that the music sucks. Third, I was also surprised they didn’t use a socket, or at least a crescent wrench to tighten the bolts, but maybe they’re making a home brew socket wrench in the next video? Necessity is the Mother of Invention, after all. And fourth, I understand the comments on a solid work base, but they’re doing things with their mind that many of us might not envision, so as long as they stay safe and get the results they need for the projects they’re doing, I’m giving them a pass. Not everyone has the experience (and income) to have the best tools in every case, so more power to them. Take care and keep thinking.
