I bet there's already been a Manhattan Project style push for advanced robotics years ago, maybe decades ago. Boston Dynamics and the others are just the scrap technology they release for PR reasons. The populace needs to believe that tech (from cell phones to flying cars) is arrived at organically, while in reality it is suppressed/ball-balled, hoarded in classified facilities, and then systematically re-released for the masses with back doors, spyware, and soft-kill built in. Logo was pretty atrocious too, and their robot looks like an expensive toy at best. Didn't look like pacman either, I get the feeling someone sent over a script to shill with but the design was modified between them sending the promo pics and whoever was in charge of making the video was too lazy to change it.

I really never understood the drive to compete for records at algorithmic tasks. Solving a Rubik's cube fast is like getting good at RTS games - you could improve your performance by orders of magnitude by writing a simple script (of course that doesn't account for manipulating a physical toy, but you get my point). So what's the fuckin' point?
