These trees will grow in any of the lower 48, so you’re safe. I would add serviceberries, vitex (chaste) tree and desert willow as they’re more valuable to wildlife in North America than a Japanese maple, for example.

Thanks for the ideas. I had some idea of how big trees will grow because of the big old oaks that are in my back yard. They killed the pine across the yard from them. I would like a small tree to put back there further from the oaks and maybe another for my large front yard.

Great choices. I would add Japanese styrax. Just planted “Evening Light “ which is a columnar cultivar suitable for small areas. The pink styrax is a jaw dropper. Stewartia is another outstanding slow growing tree for smaller gardens. Seems to prefer part sun to filtered sun. The blooms are amazing Euschapis japonica or Korean sweetheart tree is an outstanding small tree with a truly amazing fall berry display. The favorite tree introduced by JC Raulston . Enough said. Acer griseum the paperback maple is like a fine wine. The bark when lit by the late afternoon sun is a photo opportunity. As are any of the snake bark maples. Although hard to find Acer conspicuum “Phoenix “ cannot be beat for winter bark display Not a big fan of our native fringe tree but my chionanthus retusus or Chinese fringe tree is amazing Have to cut down my Japanese persimmon this year . Some type of disease. Never got a ton of fruit because of damn squirrels

@ThreeRunHomer

Crepe myrtles come in all sizes. For a small space choose a dwarf or semi-dwarf variety. They can take the heat but if it’s an arid-dry location, they might not thrive. They definitely like the humid south.

Ruthless Goat why is this?
@CosmicStargoat
@CosmicStargoat 6 років тому
I'll find the Southern Living article....for some reason it won't let me paste the link. Where to begin? Weak wood, grows weak crotches, the heavy foliage makes the tree subject to explosion in storms. The flowers stink and worst of all, the tree has gone rogue, creating a monster of an invasive hybrid with 6 inch thorns that will wreck the tires of a John Deere tractor. Pretty tree when young, but a nightmare when it grows up. Everyone is removing these things, but it may be too late.
