50 years off-grid: architect-maker paradise amid NorCal redwoods

In 1968, Charles Bello and his wife, Vanna Rae, moved onto 240 acres of redwood forest looking to live a simpler life off the land. They had spent their savings to purchase the land so they got to work building their home themselves. Their first structure was a panelized A-frame that they erected in 5 days (with help from a couple family members). The total cost was $2,800.
The property is a half-hour drive down a dirt road and it was bare land when they arrived so Charles and Vanna Rae built their own infrastructure: roads, bridges and went decades without refrigeration nor phone (they eventually installed PV panels and cabling for phone lines).
After 15 years in the A-frame, they built a cabin in the woods, and there they lived for a decade until the trees began to block out their views. In 1991 Charles (who once apprenticed under famed architect Richard Neutra) designed the Parabolic Glass House. With a curvilinear wood roof and two curved walls of windows, the home feels enveloped in trees.
Charles and Vanna Rae built it for $8,500 with the timber they milled themselves, using salvaged materials for everything from doorknobs to stoves. The couple relied on photovoltaics, solar thermal and gas for power, and a dug-in greenhouse attached to the home provided much of their food. By canning and preserving, they could go for months without going to a grocery store. Their two boys were homeschooled. The couple supported themselves selling Christmas trees.
Nearly all the old-growth trees on the property were logged in the early 20th century, but Charles has spent the past half-century restoring the land. He and his wife set up the Redwood Forest Institute in 1997 to manage and preserve the forest. He has carefully selected 1,000 trees to be preserved for 2 millennia as the next generation of old-growth.
Now, 88 years old and a widower, Charles is determined to find successors; he hopes to find "three professional couples in their early 40's, financially independent, who want to settle on the property continuing 52 years stewardship of this special place in a sustainable lifestyle where one does for himself or herself rather than urban living". He is currently building "glamping" guest houses that he hopes will help fund the enterprise.
From Charles: "I am still able and interested in accommodating interested parties for a tour and discussions regarding Forestry, architecture, and sustainable lifestyle living as an alternative to urban lifestyle and other for interested parties."

I feel compelled to comment that Charles really is the man you see on camera. We spent a whole afternoon moving all over the property and he never got tired, neither physically, nor emotionally: he never lost that excitement in his voice for every tree and home-made window. He's almost 88 and he's very focused on finding a caretaker (or 3) to come live on his property in exchange for carrying on with the forest preservation after he dies. For anyone interested, it really is a beautiful place.

so many people with their UKposts channels on their off grid land these days, and all their energy goes into making content - nice views with drone photography, many do not even have a garden! And then they ask for patreon contributions. It's so self indulgent. If you spend so much time creating content for UKposts where is the time to work, work, work on the land? That's why rare people like Charles are out there doing their thing and of course they don't have a channel. It was so so inspiring to see this. As Charles said, they worked from dawn to dusk 7 days a week for 43 years and it was fun! (and not many people are down for that much work)

I bet that south facing field has been filled with marijuana plants for many seasons. 100 plants was the minimum for years. Each plant 3 to 8ish pounds. Pounds going for 3 to 5k for a long time. Now with the market the way it is pounds are cheap. Under a thousand and you still have to pay trimmers.

He is 90 now (mid-2022) and apparently had no good offers to take over the land and preserve it and now finds himself in danger of losing his dream, and to a university that has plans for the land that he does not approve of. If I had land and a good wife like that, I'd want to get up and do stuff all day too. But instead I'm stuck in the corporate world barely being able to afford rent and the costs of living, practically dreading each day. I'm trying to find a way out but it seems like the opportunities are closing as the corporations and wealthy buy up all the land and the government creates more laws/regulations against our freedoms.

To get an idea of what a Polymath is like check out Adam Savage hanging out with Chris Hadfield. People keep saying Adam Savage is a polymath but he himself says he is not. He can build you a remote controlled robot from scratch but he is not a polymath. Polymathy is a different level of cognition entirely... and the polymaths differ from one another a lot as well depending on what they get into. The reason polymaths have so many skills is because they are simply always engaged in learning and also learning comes easily to them. Studying many things doesn't make you a polymath retroactively - polymaths naturally end up learning more things than others cause they are more capable AND more interested. Chris Hadfield is an example of a polymath. When talking with Adam Savage you can see the difference as Adama Savage gets lost in the things Chris says or doesn't even have the same considerations when discussing something. Chris is keeping an extra few considerations during all of the conversations which escape Adam until his attention is brought there. Though I dunno how those conversations look to a 'normal' person. If you wanna be smarter look to Soma Thera and Tesla and Buckminster Fuller ... and maybe Ananda Maa ;) Good luck. ability follows curiosity ;)

what a beautiful soul, I so enjoyed listening to this man speak. He embodies so much passion and zest for life. The amount of knowledge and skills he has accumulated over a lifetime really is amazing. Anyone know if this man is still living? Someone should give him a publishing deal for a memoir or an off grid manual. I would read and read again. I wish he had another 50 years to continue his work, he has made such a remarkable impact.

I function much better when I have limited options. Too much choice is just too overwhelming and creates indecision and stagnation.

This is the kind of person I wish I could be. Energetic and full of enthusiasm. I don’t think I have it in me haha but I’m glad people like him exist.

This blew me away. This man and his wife are both genius’s and did amazing things with no help from the internet. Incredible video and story.

I love his quote "Limitations are not necessarily bad. They actually inspire creation because if you can go to the store and buy it, it's too easy. You just buy it. If you can't buy it, then you have to make it." Fantastic sentiment for life in general!

Creativity comes from limits. When someone is told "do whatever you want" they can't think of anything, when they're told "do something within these bounds" then they are flush with ideas.

Look at the happiness at the face of that young man. He is like a small child in Disney land. Looking at rain admiring spiders. Man he is a fun and happiest man i have ever seen at that age. People like him are inspiration.

I can listen to him talk forever, he's like the American David Attenborough. Just an all-around pure gentleman. This is one of my favorite videos and I find myself coming back to it at least a handful of times a year.
