7 Stoic Ways to Escape the Chains of the World

When we look at the human condition, we notice that most of us are entirely controlled by a world outside of us. When we get what we want from it, we’re happy. But when it’s taken away from us, we’re sad. The praise people give us uplifts us, but their dislike makes us miserable. The more we want something, the more we’re willing to sacrifice to get it. And the more we oppose something, the higher the price we’re ready to pay to avoid it.
These chains of desire and aversion, love and hate, of like and dislike, leave us fearful and open to manipulation by shaming and blaming, the appeal of large companies, political parties, cults, and other external forces that want something from us. And thus, the world governs us like a donkey rider with a carrot on a stick, which most of us follow from birth to death, like the obedient cattle we are. But what if we decide to reject the carrot? What if we choose to escape the system?

When I was young I’ve always thought the greatest freedom I can get is to do anything that I want. But as I grow older I realised that the greatest freedom is the freedom from all of these. Fear of the uncertainty, thinking of others opinion about us, lamenting on the things that people do (and don’t do) to us. And so on. I’ve still got a long way to go but I’ll keep going 😉

Start by managing your thought stream. Approve and Deny your thoughts in real time. This will allow you to better manage your manifestations. Micromanage them at first, and after about a month you will never have to again. The world is like a small child or pet, it wants your affection but it needs your energy. Provide feedback through your thought stream, what is and what is not acceptable in your experience.

For a look at 'the system' which has created this world we so crave to disengage with, you could also do the reading of some standard curriculum books and essays from a community college English semester. In that respect I found that related ideas channels, such as 'After Skool, merely do the synthesis, thinking, pop-culture-acceptance-wrapping of dsyfunctional civilization for you ... and then break it up into digestible twitterbytes for those unwilling to climb the discourse of times recently past. I found that doing the study, and writing about it, brought me to similar yet original conclusions on my own.

Energy vampires exist. If you are around a toxic person or situation, make a plan and get out. Don’t make excuses or engage in mental gymnastics. Stoicism works in some cases and in some circumstances it doesn’t. That’s why we have critical thinking skills. Use what works and get out of negative situations.

Regarding loss of reputation, dealing with toxic people, etc. a nice neighbour told me to hold my head high, and I do. I smile and in the beginning it was difficult but now it's natural and sincere. I smile, I hold my head high, I am friendly and I take care of myself, I no longer neglect my health, my weight or my appearance. Now I dress well and look well - the toxic people must be wondering what wonderful turn my life has taken! And I even sing, to let the bullies know that I choose happiness. I've also reconnected with people, even though they are not close friends, it's important to have some people around you even if you're an introvert like me. I talk to people when I'm out and about, even short conversations add up to feeling less alone.

I've tried reading and watching many inspirational stuff, but find it hard to execute since the hardest enemy is myself, but after discovering your channel...I can say I made a big progress, one is letting go of materials things which I find hard to give up at first because it still "sparks joy" but Stoicism makes more sense that I have realized that I am capable of losing my desire for material things if I focus well enough, which I did. Now I also gave up drinking cola/soda which is hard for some because of its addicting contents that is said to be refreshing especially this summertime. You sir are a blessing to lost people like me.

Always love your posts; they are trenchant, insightful, and really reflect a deep dive into stoicism and other approaches to life. That said, while it's an apt analogy, I truly did NOT expect to see the Star Wars prequels as the reference point. It was like, "Seneca, Epictetus...Anakin Skywalker? Izzat SENATOR PALPATINE?" This isn't meant negatively, I assure you. It was just funny having your usual soothing voice exploring philosophy over tastefully chosen graphics and then HERE COMES GEORGE LUCAS like the Kool-Aid pitcher crashing through a wall.

I'm having trouble forming real relationship while maintaining a stoic view. I have less fear of loss of people and it made me see the world differently from the way people around me do. I do not feel any rush even tho i know death is walking closer to everyone around me and myself by the seconds. I always remember " the whole of it calls for tears" as the quote hits me deeply and is where i discovered stoicism. I'm not having trouble having real feelings towards people, it just feels insignificant. Every time I chat deeply with someone i always feel like I'm in the back of my head viewing my body having the conversation with that person. And while the emotions are there, It does not feel whole like a bit empty. Sometimes I even try to look more intense in dealing with troubles, as it may seem that the old me before stoicism would be very desperate if handed the same situations. Every time I talk about this to someone they look like they try to help me, some stop trying after a month some more. I'm not even sad about this it's just seem interesting. great content btw

My advice: keep on letting them go and be as self-sufficient and independent as possible. Keep on looking for people that are not "normal", but expect NOTHING. Oh and you got that optimism right! What I wanted to say was basically: don't be a bitter, negative total misanthrope. Very powerful video, There is one struggle in here that I still have huge problem with and it's always been the fear of loss, ironically the fear itself caused me to lose the person I dearly cared about. Ever since then (2 years ago) it has been really hard to move on from that haunting past, the constant loneliness reminds me of my failure to be a better a man, a more competent person and failed in that department to that person's standards. It feels like a strike to heart when I remember locking eyes with her for minutes long and to think that she want's nothing to do with me now destroys any confidence I had before, demoralized. This video is very knowledgeable on the idea that these hurtful situations are inevitable to hide or run from. I hope one day I find enlightenment from all of it but it's extremely hard to let go of it, I dearly cared about this person like a family member and they isolated from me like I was a monster, it's a terrible thought to say the least, I continue to endure the pain it throws and have some faith that ill come out much stronger after the full acceptance of it. Amazing video!

Yes, I think Epictetus' advice is incredibly harsh: almost inhuman. I guess it's a good reminder of reality, and a way to prepare for the worst. * Update and clarification. My commentary is directed at this passage alone: "If you kiss your child, or your wife, say that you only kiss things which are human, and thus you will not be disturbed if either of them dies." In my opinion (from a Western, contemporary point of view), this advice is "harsh"; mainly because it aims for us to "not be disturbed" if our child or wife dies. Should we aim to be undisturbed when we lose a loved one? Is this realistic? For most people, it's probably too much to ask. But this doesn't mean that Epictetus' advice isn't useful. It can help us prepare for the loss of a loved one, and soften the blow. To me, that's already a tremendous benefit. - Einzel

With all due respect to stoicism, it seems fanatical what they preach, as I kept watching more and more over the years. It's just like with fundamentalists, only has no religious or political label to alert us, "hey, take it with a grain of salt." People want to accept it so readily, just because of traditionally it's called "wisdom". But when we use our common sense, we find them exaggerating, unnatural, acting larger-than-life. The very essence of philosophy is to think for oneself. It's okay to be human, to make mistakes, to experience, to be in uncertainty, to be ignorant but yet being stubborn and try to grow again and again. Here stoicism is pursuing some fantasy, as if humans can be superheroes of rigid "reasoning". Despite how it preaches about being "natural", it ties us to act unnatural in life. The proof is the person watching oneself how one tries to control everything one does, the very act of maintenance of being "natural"/"peaceful"/"rational" turns into heavy burden inside, bigger than what one felt before practicing such "wisdom". Either the person sees it from 3rd view and realize how one is trapped in their own indoctrination OR they simply go into denial and fabricate more justifications to not feel uncomfortable that one has been having a delusional mindset. The way I've seen it over the months, this youtuber is creating content as a way not to only sell his own book but also to convince himself of his own defeatism being something not only "positive" but also "wise". I'm sorry for you, mate. In the end of any spiritual/intellectual/emotional journey, you will stop quoting, listening, and reading this and that, which otherwise only leads to alienate yourself, and more follow your own heart and do what you want and like deep inside. Many people start from here, following others, until eventually finding their own path and realizing all the past is not relevant anymore and start a renaissance within themselves, detached from preachings of others.
