James Burk these mostly apply to American locks, he’s had trouble picking (or might’ve actually failed) a standard German cabinet lock, it’s because companies like master lock call themselves high security that most people don’t know how good decent locks are, the master lock vulnerability has been known for like 80 years and master lock still hasn’t changed anything

Alot of people get offended by being talked to like a kid, but when it happens it is alot easier to learn so long a person's ego doesn't get in their own way. I think people like to think kids are inferior to them, so when they are compared to or treated like kids it makes them feel inferior. It probably ties into how some cultures associate personhood and competency with adulthood, but on the competency side of things people tend to associate intelligence as a whole as an important defying trait rather than separating what they are good at (being different types of intelligence rather than one comprehensive one, of which some they are better at than others) and what they are not (they will talk and treat subject matter as if they have competency when they don't to aviod feelings of inferiority) alongside associations of education equating to intelligence rather than intelligence being your ability to problem identify and solve rather than information acquisition and holding (having more information allows you to make more connections and find patterns for problem solving, but is intelligence is morr about what you can do with what you have rather than what you have in of itself); that kind of insecurity formation and action is just a guess based on my own experiences though interacting with others, I think that also ties into why some humans think of humans as superior beings and are offended by being told they are an animal

All of us bicyclists should always keep in mind how easy locks are to bypass or pick - and bike locks are notorious for having really strong chains or cables or bars, held closed by locks that are very easy to defeat. In the time it takes to ring up a bottle of water in the convenience store your bike lock can be opened ten times over.

My friend's dad taught me how to pick locks, he was a lock Smith after his 9-5 job, but he also enjoyed the puzzle, so he had a huge box of many different brands of locks to pick. I found out pretty quickly that master locks were the easiest to pick. Sadly, when I got hooked on drugs, picking locks became a necessity so I could have my dope for the day. Luckily I was strong enough to drop the habit 6 yrs ago, but I still enjoy picking locks as a hobby. Btw, 4 number combination locks are the absolute easiest locks to pick. Just like in this video, you just have to slide a tool into the side of the 3rd wheel, so don't use them. I did it alllll the time.

Back when I was in high school (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) everybody had a master lock, combination type, on their lockers. These were vulnerable to the shim attack. There were two good sources. The better one were street sweeper brush wires, which were actually not so much wires as long skinny and flat pieces of metal. You could find these on the street just by keeping your eyes out, because they fall off ... if not all the time, then at least enough of the time. The second source is also a long skinny flat piece of metal, from a ruler. The good rulers, meant to be used as a straightedge, had a thin blade on the edge, to prevent the wood from getting dented and ruining it as a straightedge.
@howmanyrobot

My high school (1999-2003) had the lockers with the combination knobs built-in, and they changed the combinations each year. It would've been fine if they didn't also keep the spreadsheet with all of the combinations in an open folder on the network. I found them while bored one day, showed someone, and a few weeks later he was suspended for selling printouts of the spreadsheet in the hallway.

Lock picking is probably like learning to ride a unicycle, juggling, or tight rope walking. It's not overly complicated or necessarily hard to accomplish, it just takes determination & lots of practice. Most of the population doesn't have the determination or wish to put in the practice necessary, which makes most padlocks very adequate for the job they're designed to do. Also factor in that most of the population aren't thieves and honor the implied desire a lock represents. A truly determined thief will just bring some bolt cutters.
