Here in 2022, this feels like he was too optimistic.

It's wild that this was uploaded 8 years ago. It's scary how accurate a lot of his predictions are regarding a world wide pandemic.

He's basically stating how life is going to be from 2020 onward...

Here were are in 2022, 3 years into a worldwide pandemic. It's still growing strong. Spanish flu 1918, covid 2019. Everything he is saying would have put us in a much better position to handle our current pandemic situation.

How strange that the first thing he talks about is a killer virus and the second thing is the Suns CORONA! I'm having a twilight zone moment.

My fiancé showed me the movie Contagion in 2019. The whole time she was saying “this could happen” and “this is one of my biggest fears.” Looking back at that time is wiiiild. Seems like a decade ago.

There are so many of these existential threats that we can prevent now, but not all of them, like increases in vulcanism. Mr. Petranek is so right, why not protect ourselves from those we can?

Part of me is hoping the world will end soon. So seeing the title made me feel good and hopeful for a moment. But I don't know if I want the world to end soon.

I love how this guy refers to himself as a science editor and slights anyone who disagrees with him. But he loves his MOM. He lets us know about his best talk ever, how gracious. He later refers to his greater ideas, what a great guy............

Petranek get a lot wrong here, and makes his claims without citing any authorities at all! Great job TED! Two things I'll point out right off: (1) In 2013, when Petranek was speaking, the IPBES publicized modelling 'estimates' of the number of species in existence. This 'modeling estimate' guessed that there are about 8.7 million species on the planet. However, there are only about 1.8 million species currently discovered and catalogued, with more than 50% of these being insects. At the current rate of discovery of about 250 new species each year, it will take about 27,000 years to 'discover' these estimated species! Petranek was using these extrapolated numbers knowing that they are not based in fact, but on computer modelling with suspect inputs. His species extinction estimates are also based on this faulty math. In fact, IUCN research shows that species extinctions have been trending DOWN since 1870! (2) In a related claim, Petranek suggests that all 'mass extinctions' occurred when CO2 levels were high, with the inference that CO2 caused the mass extinction! This is dishonest and a complete misunderstanding of the science. Here I will just says this: During the Cambrian Explosion (explosion of life) about 500 million years ago, when almost ALL species groups evolved, the CO2 levels were between 3000 - 4000 ppm, whereas today we are around 400 ppm. This demonstrates conclusively that plant and animal life requires CO2, and perhaps lots of it, to grow. Petranek conflates the massive toxic gas releases from volcanic eruptions with CO2 levels to suggest CO2 was the cause of these extinctions. He should be ashamed. He is nothing more than a shill. As Petranek admits, TED 'encouraged' him to do another talk with an apocalyptical theme. TED pushed this 'end of the world' theme. For this they should also be ashamed. There is no need to lie to make the point that life is tenuous and ends... for every individual, and every species, eventually. Luckily, life is also resilient. Apparently TED has invested heavily in the anti-CO2 narrative.

This guy knows how to talk. Some people talk but its nothing more than talk. This guy talks when he's talking and I respect that

I had watched this video a year or two ago. Impressed as I was from the wisdom contained herein, it's just passed off as another "science talk". Watching it again today, in the Covid-19 times, shows it entirely in a different light. The prophecy in this video is so surreal.

Referring to glowing Plants: I prefer the darkness of the area in which I live and got upset when the state added lights on our highway exit/entrance and would like to see the stars from my backyard, over light pollution!

I am watching this on March 7, 2020. The part of Mr. Petranek's talk that deals with possible future pandemics is so on-target and turned out to be so futile, because people do not like to consider certain kinds of hazard that might be ahead.

Iwish we would spend more on saving humanity than we do on trying to kill each other.
