Those early and late storms are the worst. Not only are they slick as snot, but most folks either don't have their snow tires on yet, or have taken them off. When it's only September, or you've had weeks of 50 and 60 degree days in April or May, then wham! Often it starts out as rain, which then freezes to solid ice, then it snows on top of it. Then, two days later it's sunny, dry and 60 degrees!

You hit the nail on the head lack of active driving and even good tires. Too many times I see big trucks and SUVS sliding around or stuck. Driving a manual is also a great advantage in this weather. do cars still slide even with winter tires?
@joebrown96212 роки тому
For sure but way less.. your traction limit is increased not just tractive effort which AWD can give but overall grip levels.. if winter tires start to slide way more grual and linear plus the recovery time is less compared to all season which are more touchy and snaps out more violently then if you're trying to correct it you have to wait on it and it may or may not recover spinning out

I have wondered for many many years now why people who live in areas with frequent winter snows choose to drive vehicles without AWD or 4x4 capability. I realize it’s not a realistic choice for everyone as they are a bit more expensive, but there are many vehicles with these capabilities that are relatively affordable. When I moved to Maine I immediately bought an AWD vehicle and never had an issue while I often saw many lifelong Mainers slip and slide all over the place. Funny when a Texan is a better winter driver than a Mainer!
@johnnyrambles3 роки тому
To be fair AWD or 4x4 would have helped few if any of the drivers in this video. 4x4 helps you go, but it does nothing to help you stop. patience, chains, studs or snow tires are what these drivers needed.
@chaoticgood39353 роки тому
@@johnnyrambles Too true. It was a pretty extreme situation. AWD/4x4 plus snow tires makes a huge difference. I never used snow tires and definitely had a few light slides here and there but nothing remotely dangerous or damage causing. Patience is key indeed!
@rockymtnsteeze18152 роки тому
front wheel cars do fine with snow tires. I prefer 4x4 suvs in Colorado. The problem is it was very early. A lot of people did not have their snows yet and early storms are icy and wet. I was off that day and would of went into work driving a Jeep with all seasons.
@joebrown96212 роки тому
That Mercedes in the first clip had 4wd or awd but those big rim and tire combo i bet were summer tires.. he was on the gas trying to correct it and still spun out.. dedicated winter tires, good driving habits, stability control is the best thing could happen to modern vehicles that what keeps you on the road.. 4wd has been around for ages and vehicles still hit the ditch.. 4wd truely shines to get u out of a ditch or slope drive way and from a stop.. so tractive effort yes overall traction no..
