Tha Gàidhlig agamsa! Tha mi cho toillichte faicinn rudeigin mun Gàidhlig. Mòran taing! (I speak Gaelic, so happy to see a video about it! Many thanks!). Always nice to see it being promoted from outside the Gaelic world as well as within! : ). And yes, language death is a major concern...2011 census showed the number of people with Gaelic language skills to be around 1.7% of the population! The decline has slowed so hoping for a better picture in 2021. I had no Gaelic skills in 2011....and will be reporting that I am fully fluent in the 2021 census : )

Hello Lindsay I am in some languages but not very well yet and I want to learn one from the scandinavian group, celtic and baltic group. But I don,t know which. Which ones do you recommend me? I feel more impulse for lithuanian but is latvian better? is it more rooted than lithuanian? the same with the others one. I think I prefer danish but is icelandic really old (original) danish if I know icelandic is easier to understand danish & norwegian? I want to have the privilege to know an old/ancient language non necessary to be modern or popular, spoken by millions. The same for celtic group.

Been learning for a couple years now, excited to study it in university as well! Cape Breton (top island of Nova Scotia) is one of the last strongholds of Gaelic although even now speakers are passing away at an alarming rate. It could be argued that the ratio of speakers to general population is higher there than in Scotland, which makes for an amazing immersion experience!

Im an American with Scots-Irish ancestry. All before and up to the Irish Rebellion of 1790. Most of my family tree is Scottish surnames. We settled in Western Penn and Western N.C. Both these groups pushed on to Central Texas. The biggest chunk came from SW Scotland before Antrim and Down. Ive been having fun learning Scottish Gaelic, Irish, and Spanish on Duolingo and anywhere else I can find.

I wish I had people who could speck it with me in my area. This would be a great language to offer in the schools here in America. it's so rich in history and culture and offers diversity in a way other language's can't. It's the best thing I've put in my mind in years.

Great vid! :) Quite a few stereotypes, but I understand they are needed to draw in new learners :) I still want to become fluent in Gàidhlig one day, even though I live in the Netherlands, and I might never really get a chance to speak it with others :P It's just such a beautiful, "soft" sounding language. It always sounds as if people are singing when speaking Gàidhlig :) That's why I want to learn it. I would love to write a book in it, or to write poetry using Gàidhlig.

There seems to be far more concern for Gaeilge out there, which is odd, because in Ireland alone (according to 2016 cenus), 1.76 million people speak it or have some knowledge of it. Around 74,000 speak it daily. Now compare this to Gáidhlig, which 87,000 people in Scotland have some knowledge of, according to the 2011 UK census. 32,400 of these people can read, write, and speak in Gáidhlig. The figures are far fewer than Gaeilge. What’s more, is that the revival of Gaeilge is strong outside of Ireland, but the same cannot be said for Gáidhlig. It’s just strange when people give the Irish language far more attention and say things like, “please, Ireland, don’t lose your language”, when in fact Gaeilge is far from becoming linguistically extinct. There is a surge in Irish language learning both in and outside of Ireland. The same cannot be said for Gáidhlig. I think this is because Ireland and Irish culture has more media attention. When Americans think of Scotland, they think of bagpipers, kilts, whiskey, and Braveheart. Thank you for posting this! More people need to see it.

For some reason UKposts threw this one up for me, so I've only just seen it now. When counting and using the numbers alone, without a noun, we add a "meaningless particle" _a (h-)_ : a h-aon, a dhà, a trì, a ceithir, a còig, a sia, a seachd, a h-ochd, a naoi, a deich ... And she forgot to explain that 'whisky' is from _usige beatha_ meaning "water of life" :-)

@laurenmorrison4174
@laurenmorrison4174 7 років тому
Think it was a term used to refer to either Irish or Scottish Gaelic. Definitely in use around the 18th century, probably before...not sure when it fell out of use though.
@Catubrannos
@Catubrannos 7 років тому
Erse is the same word as Irish. Around the 13th century the main language of Scotland changed from Gaelic to "English". At the time English was called Inglis and Gaelic was called Scottis. Gaelic being the original language of the Kingdom. After English became the dominant language, Scottis began to refer to Inglis instead of Gaelic. Eventually becoming Scots, which is the language/dialect still spoken by millions in Scotland today. Gaelic, having been stripped of its former association with the Kingdom of Scotland was then referred to as Erse or Irish. So Erse means Irish, but it really only referred to the Gaelic spoken in Scotland. The reason Scotland, Scot etc became an important name is that this is the name of the people and country in Latin which was widely used in legal matters. It meant that the name was used by the English speaking lowlanders who also used Latin. The original name for Scotland, the one used by the original Scots is Alba (pronounced Ullipuh) and their language is Gaelic.
@lmclm1755
@lmclm1755 6 років тому
Erse was an old perjorative term that mainly referred to Irish immigrants in the west of Scotland. Now, It is normally not used.

My grandfather was the last in his bloodline to speak this language. Born in Canada, and raised in a Gaelic speaking community. Campbell or "Cambeul"(meaning crooked jaw or wry mouth in Gaelic). It's sad that this language will be lost in the next century or so... Ill just be hanging out waiting for the reparations from the English... lol.
