You guys are killing it! Machine learning + sustainable agriculture is a passion we share!

Came here from Hackaday. I'm not a farmer, but I like to see how Open Source makes this sort of thing possible. Great project. Best of luck for the future. I've subscribed so I can watch how you progress.

I found this because I'm a regenerative farmer in Japan and former Computer Engineer looking to get back into building robots for my farm and have been researching solutions. This one looks like it could work on my land (I'm at the base of a mountain forest so not entirely flat by any stretch).

Awesome platform. Makes so many solid engineering choices! So many impractical "farm robots" out there. Acorn is built for muddy, messy farms.

Thank you! Yep Acorn lives outside full time. I (Taylor) worked from home during part of our recent rainy season and Acorn was up in a field getting hammered by storms, but when I returned it was still working great!

Looks fantastic - kudos! Greetings from Denmark from an experienced open source founder slowly turning wannabe farmer 👏 we’d love to build one over here, help contribute and test how it handles colder and darker climates!

This is right up our alley since we’re already thinking/planning a similar project based on farmbot but for the beds in our market garden. And coincidentally we have a bicycle tyre frame that straddles our beds that we use for lying down to weed with a canopy. My partner is in the process of making our place more automated such as door controls for the barn, greenhouse climate controls and invented some automatic self cleaning poultry waterers (currently on version 3.0). Lots of Raspberry Pi here at Humblebee Farm in NS, Canada. We’d definitely be interested in following and sharing in your project development. Best Wishes. E&S

I really like the use of 26" fat bike tires. It seems durable enough and very economical. If you can get that design sorted and offer some of those parts for sale, that would go a long way towards attracting interest and hopefully standardizing some of these open source ag robot designs.

Heyy! You're aware of Open Source Ecology(OSE) right? This is that kind of goodness, thank you!
@ericlotze7724
@ericlotze7724 2 роки тому
Unofficial Social Media Manager/Networ-er here, here is a but of an explanation of what OSE is, then at the bottom a link to our *discord server* . I'd love to talk about this idea; i was thinking of a "farmbot but the frame is a rover" for a while so this project is amazing! ANYWHO Open Source Ecology or “OSE” is a basically a group dedicated to making all the hardware needed to build, and run, a small community/farm/town, ALL Fully Open Source It is a bit complex, as it is such a broad, multidisciplinary goal, so I’d recommend first watching the TED Talk made when the group was founded: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/i2Zkd69ta6ZjzYU.html Then I’d recommend looking around these pages: The wiki where the “real work” happens wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Main_Page (FYI it is a bit of a mess, and it’s search engine is using tech from the 90’s) The more basic (mainly announcements) page: www.opensourceecology.org/ There are also offshoot groups: - The “Open Building Institute” specializing in buildings and houses (both design, and construction) - The “Open Circuit Institute” which specializes in circuit design, and decentralized production of these PCBs Given that the wiki can be hard to navigate, I can be a “Sherpa” of sorts, feel free to ask any questions you have!

Not to be a negative nancy, but the close-up of the custom pcb has a few points where the silkscreen is getting toasted, most notably by the solar input.
@twistedfields
@twistedfields 2 роки тому
Hah yes. A few reasons. I did not do thermal vias on that PCB and I used 2oz copper so I had to hit it hard with the heat gun to do some rework. That may have been what you saw. But also on one of the PCBs I fried the current measurement chip when I hooked up a battery to the solar input for use at night without first disconnecting the supercap. So current tried to rush from the 52v battery to the probably 30v supercaps and instantly fried that chip. When I redesigned the PCB a few months ago I broke off the power section to a separate board so rework, replacement, and upgrades are easier, and I went back to using thermal vias. One of the upgrades will be a dedicated battery input so I am not unplugging stuff to add in the battery when running tests at night (I am a night owl). - Taylor

great, how to make this thing work on rough terrain? In the field the route is very rough
@twistedfields
@twistedfields 2 роки тому
The current vehicle is great on rough terrain! Since it is four wheel drive, has large tires, and it very light, it floats over big bumps with ease.

@@twistedfields Crops grow in loose, fine soil because their roots are fine and small. Rocks and big hard chunks won’t grow anything. You need to learn about plants to build a useful agbots.
@anndrake492
@anndrake492 2 роки тому
Rough terrain is not crop land. It might be a forest, but the rougher, rockier, it gets, even forests are compromised.

Great upgrades! What is the approx BoM price currently?
@twistedfields
@twistedfields 2 роки тому
Good question! I don't think we've quite tallied all that but straight BOM cost for the base vehicle is probably around $6k-10k. We will be making a new version intended for reproduction which will have clear documentation and BOM cost once that is ready!
