This isn't really what it's meant to do for the most part and it's unlikely it will be able to detect much regarding exoplanet atmospheres. It's capabilities have been overhyped in this regard imo.

Because that's what we know right now, and I emphasize "right now". We only have one sample of life, and that's on Earth. Science is always changing but what are they supposed to say? Saying that every single planet has an equal chance at hosting life? That's not true based on what we know. We need to narrow it down based on the information we have, but of course we should keep on learning.

Unfortunately it probably wont be in our lifetimes. There will need to be years of research and development of the technology and laser array before the probes are ever launched. It's a tricky thing apparently to get these probes to ride on a laser beam without falling off or getting vaporized

It's possible, but based on the only evidence we have, it's more likely that it'll be carbon based (due to carbon's ability to form bonds with other elements) and water is needed for every single different life form on earth. Nobody knows if other lifeforms on other planets exist. Because the galaxy is vast, there is very less chance of alien contact. Earth year may be insignificant compared to cosmic years which may be in millions or bilions of years . I think its time earth may start another time scale based on changes happening in our galaxy like a galactic year. There is a different sense of time on earth vs time in galactic scale. If other forms of life forms exist on other planets , we may see them sometime in the galactic time scale which is probably in millions or billions of years. This is a surmise.

I'm with you! I look at a pic like 49:35 and wonder "what could be down there?" And wonder how many trillions of planets like this there must be, and think of how some of them probably blow our (amazing in its own right) earth away in terms of beauty, intelligent life, civilizations, tech, etc... and how some of them could literally save our lives if we just reach them. And then realize I'm going to die never experiencing any of it, and it sucks!

I don't know what part of the Earth you live on but I am going to make a suggestion. You really need to open your eyes as to how bad mankind is destroying this perfect planet. I can't imagine the world that my great grandchildren is going to inherit. Over population no water no food no air. Sounds really perfect huh. If we don't stop countries like China and India or America as far as this goes from having children like breeding roaches there won't be any earth left for anyone. The small planets like Pluto, Eris, Sedna, and Makemake are much farther away from the sun than Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are, so he’s correct in saying this.

@@Jellyman1129 I doubt this, because 1. Officially pluto is not a planet, and 2.there's only 1 "small planet farther away from the sun" in our case. The smaller planets are obviously terrestrial planets when it comes to our solar system which is what he's saying the opposite of in this video

@@okami220 There’s no such thing as a planet definition being “official” or not. The IAU are not experts in planets. Planetary scientists who ARE the experts unanimously don’t use the IAU definition and use a different one that includes Pluto, Eris, Sedna, and many more. The terrestrial planets are average in size while the planets in the Kuiper Belt are much smaller. So again, he’s correct.

tbf we can`t really study exoplanets orbits in detail since all we can see is their "shadows", right? (I'm just someone who likes space stuff, not someone that actually knows and understand astronomy, so correct me if I'm wrong).

@@Luizfernando-dm2rf IF the planet is directly between the star and your telescope all you can see is the light coming through the planet's atmosphere. From that light with good equipment and a lot of skill you can often figure out what the atmosphere of that planet is composed of. If the planet is at 90 degrees to the line between the star and the earth then 1/2 the planet will be illuminated (think half-moon). We don't really have the equipment yet to distinguish surface features but it is theoretically possible and at the rate, telescopes are improving we may be able to distinguish large scale features pretty soon, maybe continents versus oceans if everything goes right. If we do see that then we have really found something neat :), if we detect oxygen in the atmosphere then that is likely to be another real earth-type planet. Being able to see a whole side of a planet around another star (like a full moon) is going to be a long ways off, I would guess maybe whatever telescope replaces James Webb may be working on that. And Luiz don't feel bad, when I was a young man we had no idea that we would be able to do this kind of thing, its really amazing. Before I retired I was a Planetary Scientist, and even working in that field I could not keep up with the neat stuff that the astronomers are doing. If you would like to learn more about space without having to bust your tail you might find a set of programs on youtube called Scishow Space to be fun and informational (I enjoy watching it myself, its real well done) - take care

people think aliens can get on a ship and travel to us so easily as if by the time they get here we arent already extinct.

If they're advanced enough to get to us at all; they probably have some type of warp drive. Would make sense if you think about the consistent sightings showing how they can go from stop, to mach 5+ to stop again; they'd be moving space around them not themselves, so propulsion isn't required at all. All of this assuming aliens are ever or have ever been here.
