For all you Meshtastic nuts out there we needed a central point where our nodes will show their position on a map. Of course in a doomsday environment where the internet goes down, this would be useless, but for now it provides a great tool to see who's nearby and assist with placing repeaters and routers at strategic points around the world.

Meshtastic seems to be taking off to an amazing extent. I'm about to start deploying several solar nodes in a mesh to repeat weather data and slow-scan pictures from mountains 37 km away and 2,000 meters higher. Should take 4 or 5 intermediate nodes based on solar garden lights.

SSTV over Meshtastic?
@Peter_S_
@Peter_S_ 2 місяці тому
@@mr_spoons Some folks from my local makerspace did a high altitude balloon with pictures (SSTV essentially) over LoRa and it worked. The data rate is low but it's worth it for a static picture. I'm my situation I'll be using directional antennas to not pollute the spectrum.
@mr_spoons
@mr_spoons 2 місяці тому
@@Peter_S_ I can't see how the Meshtastic usage of LoRa will work with SSTV unless a different app is used to get the data into the mesh. I can't find any info on this.
@Peter_S_
@Peter_S_ 2 місяці тому
@@mr_spoons Yes, the framework for picture transmission will be custom. A capture request from the viewing end will initiate a capture at the source end. The picture data will be compressed and then transferred very slowly as a series of packets with a check sequence and retransmission scheme managed by little apps on either side to make any retransmission more efficient. I'll admit it's absurd to send picture data over low speed links, but it's more of a demonstration than anything else. When I first heard of pictures over LoRa I shook my head a bit, but it does work. I'll take the picture data to a new frequency with a fully private mesh if necessary to not pollute the spectrum for others.

Very nice! Thanks for reporting on it! A couple of years ago another local ham and I set up a 4 node mesh in our town. One at his house, another at my rental house about 2.5 to 3 miles ENE of him, another solar powered node I temporarily placed in a public park ~2.5 miles NNW of my rental, then a 4th node at my house another 3 miles NNW of that one. We really needed more nodes in between, but we did manage to pass one whole message from his house to mine. I've been meaning to ask the town if our local club (K5SRC) can mount self-contained nodes on public property and/or utility easements.

Hey I saw my node out in the middle of nowhere in California. nice. However I don't plan on using MQTT other than that one test I did. Just a personal preference as I believe it defeats the purpose of being an off grid communications platform.

This looks like a great ideea, if you want to plan something in advance. But personally I can't imagine what :) The usecase I can relate with, for the lora communication devices, is in case of disaster, as mentioned in this video. Natural disaster or human made, like war. And for both situation, I don't see the benefit of a node gps position. Especially in the war scenario, this will be a security issue. Just my taught. Keep up with the videos!

So, you look at the MQTT server from Meshtastic. But do you look on channel or topic as well? The standard msh-topic is overwhelming and annoying besides your first few tests, and there are channels and topics made each new day. How do you get them all on this map?
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 2 місяці тому
Thats down to the developer to decide which topics to subscribe too. According to the comments made on the Reddit post, they are aware of this and looks like will be using the standard location topic that gets set when you setup the node. For example for EU it would be msh/EU868
@saxpert
@saxpert 2 місяці тому
The meshmap is not live. It shows nodes as well that haven't been online since days. It's helping anyway. I would like to have the information if a node uses 433 or 868.
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 2 місяці тому
They are building in a timeout, according to the reddit thread, which will remove nodes that have not been seen for a certain period of time. I guess they could start to add filters, so we can set a "time" filter ourselves. Hopefully they will continue the project and improve it for the community.
@saxpert
@saxpert 2 місяці тому
@@TechMindsOfficial I am currently disappointed about the coverage. With my 868 node on a very good location with a cavity filter and 9db antenna I receive nothing. It's not the hardware, it's measured already with vna. Maybe it's the esp32 that seems to reduce the gain of the internal AGC when strong lte repeaters are in line of sight. Regardless the cavity filter it seems that the noise affects the board itself. I have no other explanation for receiving nothing despite I have a 868mhz node 10km away in line of sight....
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 2 місяці тому
@@saxpert Get another node and use the range test feature. That may help. Alternatively use an SDR to look at the spectrum around 868 to see if there is some splatter from a rogue device etc. Also, check that the cavity filter is actually working correctly, might not be tuned correctly or causing too much inline loss?
@saxpert
@saxpert 2 місяці тому
@@TechMindsOfficial I know quite well, that the lowloss cable, the filter and the antenna and the spectrum is fine because I used the hardware for OGN before. The spectrum behind the filter is fine, no noise only lora, flarm, car opener, sensors... I ran this node at my house before and it received the same stations as another node. It's a lilygo paxcounter. I'm still investigating, the problem is that you don't know what's happen in the chip. I noticed that the esp32 is more sensitive with noise with gfsk modulation but lora sensitivity is degrading as well when strong LTE stations are around. I will test the range feature but what should I do with the csv data?

I'll post the exact message I sent to "M0DQW_Base2" which I believe is you this morning (2024-02-24) after receiving my pair on Heltec V3 on Friday: "I just looked up your HAM call sign, M0DQW and was utterly gobsmacked to find out your TechMinds and indeed I follow you on UKposts! 👍" Small world indeed! Very curious if you're doing a lot of the heavy lifting your end (pointing antenna in my direction, etc) as my setup is literally a Heltec sat in on south facing window sill 😛 I am based in Buckingham town, some 21.8 km away. As mentioned I'm keen to potentially help bridge a gap between MK and Aylesbury, if possible. Perhaps with Yagis pointing in the right direction? I'm very new and amateur at this so any and all help is welcome!

@@TechMindsOfficial Hi! I finally received by pair of Heltec V3's Friday and Saturday woke to find two nodes hailing from Aylesbury; one of which I believe is yours "M0DQW_base2"? I'm getting your setup is far superior to just sitting a stock in Heltec in a south-facing window and crossing fingers 😁 As I'm very new and very armature to all this rushing out to buy a "fancy" stuff like directional yagis might not be the best move, but very willing to hear your advice on bridging that gap.
@ethzero
@ethzero 2 місяці тому
Forgot to say I'm located in Buckingham town. Would consider setting up a repeat or other Meshtastic "role" once I've gotten to grips with simple peer-to-peer stuff (and that justifies the outlay!)
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 2 місяці тому
@@ethzero Ahhh yes! That's my test node that's in the loft on a short amazon lora antenna. I have been playing with Yagis, pointing north, but not from that node. So you received my node from my loft! ;-) Unfortunately I did not receive you though.. There is a router at Whitchurch, so maybe it went through that, but if you could reach that router/repeater then I would of heard you as its strong here. Middle of next week I have the 2.2m Paradar 11.5dBi antenna going above the roof on my house, so maybe we might be able to make contact then. I will be changing my node to a permanent node, most likely just called M0DQW_Base, so if you see it, try and send a message! :-) I just gotta figure out which one of my modules to use! lol. Cheers for the info!
