A Year With The Ravens at Crystal Cove

Because of the changes in the "movie" industry, the decision was made to pull back a bit and make this available on UKposts. That being the case, the original 2 hour + movie was too long for that format so it was broken down into 2 shorter versions with a few "out-takes." The Crystal Cove edition is a slightly longer version that focuses more on Rick's personal relationships with both the raven couples, and the kids they raise each year at this pristine beachfront California State Park. Shot on location in Newport Beach, California.

Thank you Eric! originally we were going to make an actual made for theaters doc, but then in the 10 years I took to put it all together, the whole theater movie bit fell apart and the competition to even get it seen or distributed was ridiculous. So we cut back a bit and tried to make something simpler for everybody. So glad you enjoyed it!

I think it goes without saying, but just for the record "God Bless" everyone who does his work. I have my own personal story with an old girl crow I affectionately named Fred, lol because I thought she was a male, and she blocked at me one day while I worked under a car. She sound just like a chicken, and I came out from under the car expecting to see a chicken perched in the tree, but it was Fred, and I was so amused by her and we became very good friends, and I fed her daily, she would follow me 1/2 a mile down to a friend's house. Then she stopped coming over, I thought the worst had happen, then one day she came back with two youngsters with her, that's the day I knew Fred was a female, life is still good, with her sharing me with others of her kind, they really give me a lot of love & joy.

As soon as you said you found an orphan baby Raven, I knew you went down the same path I did when you found a baby bird and that's why I am here. Because Raven's have imprinted on me here in Toronto, Ontario, while they were engaging with other birds that know me well. I will come back to watch this. It's amazing how birds that imprint on us, will bring friends to us to show how we are good with them and we can help them get what they need. Once you learn calls they will use their calls to even call humans out of their homes. My Blue Jays, Robins, Hawks, Pigeons, they all do it where I live. I provide food even though we are not supposed to. I provide a birdbath, and clean fresh water every day, and clean it. Keeping clean water, helps birds stay clean from any parasites and viruses. This is why they come to humans with other pets. The wild animals know that those humans are animal friendly and have some kind of animal knowledge to keep them also clean, healthy. I hope my comment helps anyone that is into birdwatching and finds something that needs help. Your animal controls will always put down small animals and birds, your wildlife centres are all privately funded and take forever to get to you. They have a habit of putting small birds to sleep as well. There is many resources with bird breeders to help wild birds in the wild. Always quarantine sick animals from healthy ones, that's a given so that you are not spreading anything. I hope my tips help anyone that is out there and comes across something they want to help. Good Luck to all of you animal helpers, and watchers. Thanks for being a fellow animal appreciation person. There are many out there that hit our birds with broomsticks, mophandles from their balconies, I have witnessed this. So, if you see a bird with a low hanging wing, or it's wing or shoulder limping, please get it to help. Thanks.

This is awesome! I have a nice murder of crows who I have been feeding and talking to for about 4 years now. I am amazed at how people say they don't like them or they're ugly! It's mindblowing! I think they're so much fun to see every day! Just from learning naturally, I knew some things about the raven because of the common traits as the crow. For example, the babies with their bare legs and how the pink on their beaks are only on the young ones and will eventually turn black. The first one I got to know I named Shae. (Crow Shae, that is!) Hahahaha! Here in Florida, a lot of birds get shocked by the power lines. I think that's what happened to her, but she lived through it fine, save some feathers on her head and one of her feet was melted into a blob. She tends to hop a lot in the grass, but she gets around just fine and is definitely one of the leaders of the group of about 50 birds here year 'round! Obviously, I can talk about these precious animals as you can talk about yours! Lol! Take care and best wishes to you, your wife and your feathered brood!

It's nice to see that others have been successful in making "friends" with crows. My "murder" or crow neighbors are just too large of group to get to "know" just one or even a small family. They will be more than happy to just take food off my roof but they will not take the time to sit and befriend me the way I've been able to do with the ravens. Unfortunately, people think I'm not "fond" of crows (probably because I say it in the movie but that was just old movie story telling where you have to have a villain ... ) but they are just as fascinating to watch and enjoy as the ravens. The big difference is I just can't seem to get any that to want to spend time with me ... Thanks for sharing!

@@theravendiaries Thanks for replying! Mostly, they include me in their morning calls to see where everyone is. Now they're laughing when I do and they just started "blowing me kisses." Well, kind of! One in particular will exchange "MUUAAH!" with me and its absolutely precious! They will keep saying it until I finish. Anyway, people think I'm crazy but I love being the house with all of the Crows! Anyway! Hahahaha! Take care and have fun with those awesome Ravens!

WOW!!! That was absolutely wonderful!!! 🧡 I've been in love with all the Corvids since I was a little girl because a large black bird followed me and my family along the cliff tops above Dunkirk; when I stood still to watch it, it came and sat on my shoulder for many minutes. Dad said it was a jackdaw. Where I live now there are fields and woods in front of my windows and there's a very large flock of jackdaws who've been in the bell tower of our church ever since I moved here (Lancashire. UK) over 40 years ago, plus crows, rooks, buzzards, sparrow hawks, and currently 6 pairs of magpies in the woods. This year for the first time, we've had sightings of much larger black birds that we think/hope are ravens, but can't be sure until I get some new binoculars. Obviously we also have the usual country and garden birds as well as owls, bats, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, and a small family of Roe deer who stroll through the misty fields over there...life is never dull gazing out of my lounge window! BTW. I'm a violinist so adore your choice of music! I'll be heading off to watch the rest of 'theravendiaries' next! Thank you for these wonderful videos. SUBSCRIBED! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Thank you for sharing. Your raven diaries film was really beautifully and naturally put together and a lovely way to get to know these intelligent and fascinating birds, as well as an amazing bit of coastline where they live. Wow those whales, dolphins, bobcats, coyotes and wolves. You've got it all there. I came across your diaries after researching birds, bird language, bird intelligence and recently focusing on corvids recently online. In real life I've started feeding birds, primarily pigeons with a few crows beginning to join in the picnic in my home town in the UK. As they get to know me and trust me, I get to experience their curiousity too. The pigeons are much more friendly and approachable but I've seen the crows following me around and calling when they see me just they tend to hang back until after the pigeons have fed and I've stepped away before venturing forwards for a poke around. So naturally I wanted to know more about these feathered friends who likewise are showing curiousity about me. Interestingly during my online research, I found ravens are some of the best linguists and communicators with corvid brains and communication skills at the top of the avian evolutionary tree. This led me to find your video. Greetings from the UK, where we have ravens but they are few and far between. In response to a subject you bring up regarding how you documented your birds in primarily a friendly companioniable way following their lives rather than following the methodology of science. One of the things I'd say about the scientific studies of bird in particular corvid intelligence I've seen so far online that I've noted, is actually how slow it is for their community to evolve and elaborate and move on to new territory once they've discovered the birds can do "something". The current experiments I've seen all around the world seem to be so slow, repeating the same themes in different locations, I presume in order to get consensus, rather than to seek new and unique innovative approaches. One experiment from Cornell university for example that took place over 10 years on crow family language, recognition and memory including collective family memory, involved tracking down a crow that had migrated from the campus to an inner city environment with the addition of a radio tracker on its back. After finding it eventually all they did was to put on a mask that they'd used to scare its parents to find the bird did a warning call when it saw it. Was that it, after 10 years and maybe a million dollars in research funding? I felt sad for both the scientists and the bird that there was no positive recognition between the 2 parties once they were reunited after all that time and effort on behalf of scientific research, with the bird condemned to continue wearing the radio tracker for the rest of its life just for the sake of a crow call saying it didn't like people wearing scary masks. Was that it? With your story, when you found the white kneed raven in the park you recognised from earlier at the seashore, after not seeing it for maybe a year, it seemed clear he recognised you and greeted you. That was so cute and heart felt too and showed you'd been a true companion to these birds when in their company. Blessings for you and all your friendships with the winged ones in your domain wishing you all the best. 😊✌

Thank you for your post , comments and insights! It's funny I was trained in school for a marine biology degree, I quit and moved on the the restaurant biz after finding Mr. Cousteau had made marine science so popular jobs were scarce. But in the restaurant industry I got a hands on phsycoligy lesson on behavior. People forget, when they are in a restaurant they spill the beans on everything, and it's not like telling a bartender what you want them to hear, we heard what the sibling souse, friend or family member pried out of the person they knew well. If I wrote a book I'd be killed for all I could leak, however, getting to see and hear the real "you" started my on a curiosity mission for behavior in general. Somehow I got a crow and then a raven both who needed some sort of temporary protection for a while. Working with these 2 wild animals, as opposed to the normal dog, cats, fish reptiles and such we can have as pets, gave me an eye opening "need to know" about all animals. Then came the exposure to the big cats, bears, wolves, dolphins, orcas, whales and all sorts of exotics, and I began a learning adventure that will never end. I spend time and share the ravens because they stay in pretty much the same square mile area for decades. I need no special equipment, just a camera, to tract them. I talk with the researcher at Lime Kiln Park in Washington every time I go up there, and the monies, time and equipment that are needed to tract Orcas is quite the different story. So I feel very fortunate I get to do what I do. It's always a pleasure to know others enjoy it! One of these days I've got to get back to the UK. One, to visit the ravens at the Tower, the other is see if I can visit your newer celebrity Fable! ukposts.info/have/v-deo/apRkmIWYpG95yGg.html Thanks again!

Oh my goodness. What a wonderful post. I love the Corvids! We had 4 crow hatchlings in Savannah, GA that we watched grow up. Our yard was a certified backyard wildlife habitat and I would sit in my swing and they would chatter away with me. I was astonished how many different vocalizations they had. One day I heard one calling excitedly in a way I hadn’t heard before. I looked around first for a snake but saw nothing so I said “What’s wrong , buddy?” It chortled back and flew at something which turned out to be a large Barred Owl I hadn’t noticed. It was almost as if it was saying “Watch out you careless human. There’s danger here!” Such wonderful, intelligent birds. Thanks for your video!

Thank you Sonja for both your comments. These birds have provided a very unique insight into both relationships and life itself. Far beyond anything words can convey. I'm glad to see some of that got through in the film. This world certainly has some amazing things to offer those willing to look! Thanks for the encouragement and for appreciating it!

Dear Rick B., that was absolutely spectacular, I make films myself and imagine that must have taken an absurd amount of time to put together, I can only imagine how much footage you had to trawl through for all those segments, so, thanks very much for taking that time, even if it is a great passion. That was very, very interesting and informative, I'll never look at Raven in the same way again. I made a film recently in Ireland during which I had an encounter with a (now I must go and check the footage to confirm if it was a crow or raven) raven, I think, when I visited an ancient megalithic site at dawn, it swooped out of the mist as I was shooting, perched on one of the stones like something out of a cheesy fantasy film, 'cawwed' at me then flew off - a most astonishing encounter, a real gate-keeper of the site, it seemed to me. There was a large group nearby which watched me all day and it made me wonder whether I could tame one, because I live in a van and don't have enough room for a dog... I'd be interested to know your thoughts there if you have any, I wouldn't consider it if the fellow would be unhappy... He would be outside and could nest on the roof... heheh, crazy thought! The film mentioned is on my channel, with "away with the fairies" on the thumbnail, the birds feature quite strongly in it, if of interest... and that one appearing out of the mist is the highlight. Thanks again for that, I'm going to be having a chat with the crows and ravens I meet on the road now as I travel, in fact, it seems maybe I don't need to make a pet of one, I can just talk to them 'over the gate'. All the best, Jess.

Just wanted to share, the raven voices to the south 1/4 mi. have turned into me now having, at last count.. 11 ravens. Too many to be a bond pair & family so I don't know what this is. They feed in my pasture morning and late afternoon..so many. Trying to get video, put up a game cam to morning as they are very shy. One mated pair shows now every morning, feeds and takes food to the north, or sometimes caches it in the grass so waiting to see if there is fledglings there. If I'm working outside, she calls to me until I get her a spare chicken egg, then takes it somewhere...

Where I live in the foothills in Los Angeles, I get up to 80 crows at a time... and only one bonded pair of ravens. Same numbers for years!

It’s my limited understanding that ravens can often form large family groups. So, the 11 ravens you have could be a family group. They’re way more than most people give them credit.
@pommiebears
@pommiebears 2 роки тому
@@Skylaire you could have a very large family group, or two or three families. I believe family groups can consist of up to 40+ individual ravens.

Fantastic, I sat and watched the whole bit. I'm in Kansas and have been hoping to draw some crows into interactions on our property for two years. My health is crappy but my gardening girlfriend has been feeding all the birds that come around and we make sure there is water enough to go around. When the temp hits over 100 for a week or so the birds seem to like that we put fresh water out for them. In my life I have had a good deal of success having wild animals accept me as a neighbor. In Flushing Michigan living along side the Flint River we have a lot of wildlife. Deer, turkeys, racoons, beavers, woodchucks had all accepted my woodsy existence. It just feels so special when wild things treat you like a neighbor. Great work on your video production. I will try again next spring, good Lord willing to grant me the gift of 'present' living in the now time. We have drawn some crows in that regularly stop by but haven't had many good interaction as you have. Patients is a virtue and when it comes to nature, patients has its natural rewards. God bless and keep up the great work.

Thanks for the stories! A word about the crows, it takes sometimes years of patience, cause it will be a younger one that befriends, and you almost have to ignore them, in other words don't look and talk at them, just let them do their thing, till they trust you!

Man, I love the rhythm of your production. If's been growing on me as I've slowly taken in your work on a year in the life of a corvus, or covidae Your photography is remarkably beautiful, whether it's of a young raven's early attempts at tricky flight manouvers, or a wide shot of the Pacific Coast wherein the birds thrive (especially those heartbreakingly beautiful sunsets!): Monsieur, felicitations & congrats on a documentary for the ages.
