@john doe The GPU company you seem to support doesn't provide drivers for Linux. The drivers available are reverse engineered or the ones build on old GPU's whose architecture was available before. It's not like they can't click next. It's that the available ones are not good, because the GPU company neither provides drivers for Linux OS or doesn't provide material information that's need to develop an opensource GPU driver.

Carter Cole We all did that back in the 80's. On cpu's like 6502, 680xx etc. The instruction set's was considerable smaller than on later cpu's, so it looks more impressing that it actually is :). Another thing was that routines often had to be cycle exact, so in addition to type in the OP codes we often had to know how many cycles the cpu used to perform each instruction.

It is assembly code. Just instead of typing the assembly mnemonics you typed their opcode values instead. After you've typed them hundreds or even thousands times you know them pretty well. Before there came any good assembler we just typed the opcodes in a monitor, directly into the memory. No memory allocations etc. back then. Just hardcore, no relocatable, code :D

It's a different aspect of the profession and I've heard him speak about the nitty gritty of the Linux Kernel, like how his philosophy of thread scheduling changed due to Mobile phones (embedded controllers) and how it ticks differently from desktops and servers. Not sure if it's still on YT. My comment is 11 years old so I've watch those vids even further back than that! Anyway, many of his videos are very old. There are tons of new technology in hardware now. If you want to learn more about thread scheduling with speculative branching & pipelining and their security implications, there are better vids out there. And then how BIG.little in ARM & x86 cores differ and their implications in hyperthreading especially with AMD Zen 4c coming. Hardware IRQ & ISR isn't something I'm bothered with anymore. Unless you're a compiler programmer or you actually write kernel code or are involved in hypervisor. Due to security, it's all abstracted away by the Kernel and virtualised. I think Linus is not involved too much in HAL these days or like at all. My understanding of HAL is from Windows NT4+. From my memory, Linus implemented modules above the monolithic kernel to support loading/unloading of drivers. It certainly is different from Windows HAL in that Windows allow legacy drivers to run in a protected address space in their native 32-bit environment on top of a 64-bit kernel. Some real mode 16-bit drivers in user space may even work provided you run them in a real-mode environment emulator like DOSBox. This prevents Windows drivers from being able to easily reloaded except for special drivers like Graphics, Mass Storage & Peripherals. Of course, both Linux & NT kernel has evolved a lot since this video.
