Ah yes, Galadriel the genocide elf, just how I remembered her from the books. I still can't make up my mind about whether it's a good or bad writing that the antagonist's causes are presented so well in this show, to the point that the protagonist's ways of thinking seem outrageous. Same case was with the mithril thing. Durin's father was 1000% right not to mine it for the elves.

You're a dwarven king, responsible for the fate of Your own kin and subjects, and then a representative of some other race, the only immortal race on the planet comes to You and ask for risking dwarven mortal lives in order for the elves to keep being immortal. Effectively - sacrifice Your own people so we, the elves can continue not sharing the same fate You all lesser ephemeral races have to share. And the argument of Durin is "Elrond is mah friend" as if the dwarves that will die mining Mithril are not. I mean how could they even have the audacity to ask for this?

I feel like I’m the only one who actually really likes Galadriel and doesn’t see her as so morally questionable. She was the only one to recognize the darkness still lingering and growing and wanted to fight and save middle earth from it, she influenced so many people for the better. And what is all this sympathy for the orcs😂never seen this before, what is she meant to do, let them all roam free and kill everyone? The south landers were getting decimated and if it wasn’t for her persuading the people of numenor to come to aid then all the south landers would most likely be dead/enslaved. Another thing I don’t understand is the whole idea that now Sauron just wants peace and to be good and it’s Galadriel that turned him dark again - I’m so confused someone please explain this and why everyone hates Galadriel. Idk if I’m just looking at this too simple minded but I don’t get what’s wrong with her quest of wanting to destroy sauron for good and wanting to destroy all the orcs aswell like isn’t that the main plot line in LOTR and everyone is in support of that there
@dantesprophet96123 місяці тому
@@Haazza 1. You typed all of that to miss the point completely. The point is that she basically told a progenitor of a race that she was going to force him to live through the death of every one of his children. What she did was the equivalent of telling a father you're going to slaughter his children and make him listen to the screams. No elf in Tolkiens writing would have done that ESPECIALLY not Galadriel. And 2 so many hate ROP's version of Galadriel because they butchered her character. She was never like this in any portrayal. She did not lie to make alliances or force someone into doing something he didn't want to do nor would she have ever fallen for Sauron's disguise. As a matter of fact her eyes and perception of evil were so strong even in her youth that Sauron made it a point to avoid being near her at any cost. Her character was butchered just to make her an edgy boss bitch who doesn't play by the rules.

Thanks so much for uploading this! Seriously, what a scene, never thought we´ll see such a well crafted moment explaining the origins of Orcs (Tolkien's most common explanation was they were Elves deformed by Morgoth) while reminding us that every soul has its pure beginning in The One. Also, anyone wondering while Galadriel was so murderous here, not only does the show pretty much spell out the whole time how much she's lost and that she was wrong to be fuelled on grief and the wish of revenge, but her family (the House of Finarfin) was a bunch of aggressive and violent people- ever heard of the Kinslaying?

Elves are hardly perfect themselves -just read the Silmarillion. And you can just imagine the atrocities (genocidal in some cases) they committed during the War of Wrath against all those they deemed servants of Morgoth -and not just against orcs and Uruks. It isn't mentioned (and no wonder) in their chronicles, but given everything Morgoth did to them and those they loved and cherished, it is hard not to think many sank into the darkness of vengeance, and slaughtered innocents along the way to ultimate victory.

@tevildo7718Рік тому
You are misremembering, Tolkien himself went back and forth on the nature of Orcs, their souls, their ability to be redeemed and so on, he was uncomfortable with an entire species of soulless but intelligent creatures since that goes against his Catholicism, and even more uncomfortable idea with an entire species of fallen beings who are slaughtered and never given a chance at redemption given they never had a chance. He died before he could figure out an answer to that problem that he was satisfied with.
@QualityPenРік тому
@@tevildo7718 This is what Tolkien has to say about the orcs’ chance for redemption: “(I nearly wrote 'irredeemably bad'; but that would be going too far. Because by accepting or tolerating their making - necessary to their actual existence - even Orcs would become part of the World, which is God's and ultimately good)”
@QualityPenРік тому
I don’t think it’s ever stated anywhere that orcs had no free will. They certainly appear to be making their own decisions all the time and have their own personalities, likes, dislikes, and even virtues (ie, loyalty to friends). I think the orcs have a bad temperament and are predisposed towards evil, much like sociopaths who were created by trauma in their childhood, but that doesn’t make them inherently evil and incapable of doing good. If you want to see a “good” or at least morally grey sociopath, watch The Expanse. The character named Amos was abused as a kid and became a sociopath but despite a lack of empathy or an internal moral compass he tries to do the right thing by attaching himself to morally good people. I think that given orcs’ nature, they could probably act much like Amos when they break away from darker influence. -- The alternative to redeemable orcs would have to be genocide, and I don’t think that’s something Tolkien would be comfortable with.

People rip on Galadriel for going on a genocidal rant…but I doubt any of the Eldar or even the Valar were ever interested in living alongside orcs or even seeing them as victims in Morgoths twisted and pointless schemes Plus, she is un-LEARNING her own bloodthirstiness, which is a product of her trauma from the First Age. You can even see at the end of this scene that she realizes she’s gone too far and is clearly ashamed at how she keeps letting her bloodlust get the better of her And she’s hardly the only member of the House of Finwe to go completely off the rails
@Trewq79Рік тому
I disagree. At 3:55, she goes into great detail about destroying Adar's people without an ounce of remorse. Naming other elves who were off the rails doesn't excuse the fact that one of the main protagonists of this show is off the rails. I don't believe she is unlearning her arrogance and bloodthirstiness either. Arrogant characters are usually humbled in their story in order to grow (In Thor 1, he was arrogant until he was banished and had to become worthy again to lift his hammer. In Iron Man 1, Stark was arrogant and naïve until he saw how dangerous his weapons were to the planet, and created Iron Man to stop the damage he was causing, etc). Galadriel was never humbled this entire season. She won every fight, and she was never corrected for a wrong decision, she was never put down for her arrogant behavior. At the end of the season, she looks like the exact same vengeful person as the beginning. And lastly, I just don't feel the trauma she experienced. She hasn't shown any emotion over her brother's death (not to mention barely talking about her husband's death). For every time she mentions the pain of losing her brother, there are 5 times she's mentioning exacting revenge. That doesn't sound like someone experiencing grief; it frankly sounds like the writers needed to create some reason for Galadriel to go on a quest to hunt Sauron.
@WiiMan1133Рік тому
@@Trewq79 does she need to get beaten up for her to learn some kind of lesson? When Mount Doom erupted, you can tell on her face that she is not only realizing what a huge mistake she made, but that she's about to get a lot of people killed. And she doesn't try to run, she accepts that she might die. During her whole conversation with Theo in the next episode you can tell she's reflecting on herself and the choices she made while also giving him advice. She even cries when she sees that Tar-Miriel is blind. Feanor was far worse in my opinion. In his speech to the Noldor, he doesn't just want to defeat Morgoth and get the Silmarils back, he wants the Elves to reclaim their birthright, which is Middle Earth. That likely mean extermination of orcs and forcing Sindar, Avari, Men, and Dwarves to live under an authoritarian regime by the Noldor. And even when he realized defeating Morgoth would never happen, he still doomed all seven of his sons to stick to getting the Silmarils.

Another thing I don’t understand is the whole idea that now Sauron just wants peace and to be good and it’s Galadriel that turned him dark again - I’m so confused someone please explain this and why everyone hates Galadriel. Idk if I’m just looking at this too simple minded but I don’t get what’s wrong with her quest of wanting to destroy sauron for good and wanting to destroy all the orcs aswell like isn’t that the main plot line in LOTR and everyone is in support of that there
@wpboddy91653 місяці тому
The point of season 1 is that galadriel is indeed correct about sauron and evil but her methods are too rash and physical, and her motives too personal and vengeful. After 5 seasons the writers want to show how she becomes galadriel the wise and fair that we see in the lord of the rings (look in the mirror). Orcs are bad but Tolkien himself struggled with the idea that they are purely evil and can't be redeemed. The show wanted to raise the issue and say, okay, we'll still show you how bad orcs are but they can also teach you about the darkness within yourself.
@wpboddy91653 місяці тому
IDK about Sauron's journey though. Hopefully his perspective will make more sense in season 2 because right now I can't work it out either.

Well Tolkien works were like that, Plain White vs black, Good vs Evil, God vs Satan, you cant blame the movies because they were accurate to the universe they were adapting, as much as modern audiences like to not have clear heroes and villains anymore, is not really Lore-accurated to the universe of Tolkien and what it represents

"Should"? She could have done this if he had not answered her questions and if he had not knocked her arrogance down at the end of their argument. Perhaps she had burned prisoners before, because he had no doubt that this was not an empty threat. And that would be a war crime and sadism. She might have to regret it in a future season when she encounters him again and he has his hands free.

@@LightLeanor19 No she would not have. The problem is no one wants to play the monsters role. But it is sometimes necessary to avoid grater evil in the future from arising.

She would have burned them, if only the Numenoreans had not stopped her, moreover, she swore to murder all the Uruk, without any sense or justice, because they are victims of darkness much more than she is. Do you really call it "necessary" to burn prisoners (which is a war crime) in front of someone who loves them (which is also sadism)? If you are writing this seriously, I have no comments adequate to this. She was going to torment the enemy of Sauron for killing Sauron and thus destroying her life's purpose, madness. She would have big problems if she did, and what kind of evil would it prevent if, on the contrary, it is evil itself? I can also remind you who exactly returned the "dark lord" to Middle-earth and restored his faith in himself, for which he thanks her in the end.@@wolwerine0007

I disagree that Galadriel is evil here and Adar is the good guy. Yes, he was an elf tortured by Souron. Yet now he was no longer an elf. He was a dark life form, seeking to destroy in the name of establishing a place for orcs - killers and murderers. It's natural to want a place in this world, but to do so by the means of destruction is primal and low. Galadriel saw true horrors in the past, horrors that made her the way she was. Her strong hatred for orcs stems from her trauma. She's a good character, portrayed as an evil one. Her motives are good, the methods maybe less so - but they're nothing compared to what Adar and his orcish friends do. Edit: to all those who pity Adar because he's a prisoner and supposed victim in this video - remember that his followers caused men fight against their own, erupted a volcano, burned and drowned vast territories.

Perhaps, but your argument here enforces a double standard. The horrors Galadriel saw that made her the way she is in this show were nothing, nothing compared to the hell that was the pits of Utumno. Everything that Galadriel had seen was also present in Utumno and Angband, but in far greater numbers. The torture endured by the first orcs was nothing to be scorned. While orcs are evil, they are tragic, at least the first. It is their nature to destroy, hammered in through millennia of pain and oppression. Their urge to destroy stems from their own trauma. A better Galadriel, perhaps one more faithful to the book, would understand this -after all, Galadriel was if nothing else skilled in reading the hearts and minds of others- and show pity rather than scorn.
@gabeheartz13saravia979 місяців тому
In my opinion, they are all tragic monsters in their own way, but at least Adar owns up to it. Galadriel justifies genocide as a righteous crusade.
@LightLeanor198 місяців тому
Uruk fight for their home like any other people, Adar takes care of Uruk, he does not torture anyone, does not vow to kill someone to make their fathers who did nothing to him suffer, and he calls "the creation of Iluvatar" even the murderer of his "children", which looks like some kind of saintliness. Galadriel frankly enjoys the opportunity (as she believes) to cause suffering to those who have suffered from the darkness much more than she herself. She hates the one who killed Sauron more than she hates Sauron. Her reaction is completely abnormal, it is not trauma, it is sadism. Compare how Adar treats Arondir, despite the fact that Arondir inflicted a mortal wound to one of Uruk dear to Adar

Galadriel was right. Orcs were born in sin, Morgoth as satan has twisted the elf blood line by only mockery and envy. He was unable to create only able to disfigure. The elves he has captured were tortured and inbreed them with animals ,beasts,demons to implant evil,hatred,fear in their nature. This was the biggest sin of Morgoth in the eyes of Iluvatar. orcs were beyond redemption.
@JN-so6wt2 місяці тому
"born in sin" like all humans? maybe stop using christian terms with such unchristian concepts as "unredeemable" for being born disfigured in sin. I'm not even christian but you don't appear to know what you're talking about. also they were already created as having the secret fire, as elves, before being corrupted. doesnt mean they lost it. Nowhere does it say they do. They are sentient creatures, and only Eru can make sentient life. Children of Iluvitar they remain. There are even accounts in books, though rare, of orcs discussing getting out of this kind of life of violence and oppression. they all do have names and societies and different cultures. So I'd love to see citations for your very wrathful and incongruous projections here. And citation on the elves 'being corrupted by inbreeding with beasts and demons to distort their muh bloodline' because I think you made that up. Tolkien was very vague about how the elves were corrupted.

" inbreed them with animals ,beasts,demons" What an absurd fanfiction. And Galadriel is wrong if she does not distinguish victims from torturers. She is absolutely wrong.

well, it's like, she wants to copy, What Melkor (morghot) did to Hurin in the first age, if you know the story... I'm kinda glad I didnt watch the series, imma sticking to the books... also I can feel Galadriel, she lost her brothers and most of her kin in the first age, which She naturally blames the URUKS ansd Sauron for. The series made a mess of a story, which I kinda accepted, I won't watch but I don't have a problem with others watching it and enjoying as well, I'm completely fine with it. But what I do not like is people on the Internet, making perceptions about a character, which theY only know through, what is being shown in the series, they don't know the character's history, and how it developed, but still idk what gives them the right to decide its nature ad decide its perception for other people? and Eru didn't give life to the Uruks, he gave life to elves who were corrupted by the torture and treachery of Morghot. Much like how Saruman created Uruk hai, Eru didnt gave them life... infact Eru only gave life to dwarfs, who were not his children.
