@teslakiller6959
@teslakiller6959 3 роки тому
No, it is not great, because the panels are about 300Watts with the losses in the cables. The car uses about 300W so it is a net 0. But then you also have losses in the cable to the car so you get less than 0, you are at negative. If he let the car sit for another hour "charging" he would loose those miles. You can clearly see that as soon as the 2kWh stored from the battery are down the car is at +0miles. At 7:35. So the only way to do this is to have 2kWh power banks and add a couple of miles, then try and charge the power bank with the solars and repeat, not worth it. Plus, you can't do that if the panels are fixed to the car and not to mention the fact that fixed panels on the car will yield very bad results. This is why solar panels on a car don't make any sense and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you. The only place this could work a little more is in a Van where you have the top AND the sides paneled up.

Very fascinating video. I'm looking to doing the same experiment but with a plug-in hybrid. If you do the math the plug-in hybrid battery is a lot smaller comparison to a Tesla battery. I mean 30 panels usually can get most houses and families of 4 off the grid. So to think 4-5 panel’s on the roof couldn’t charge (4) batteries would be silly. It probably could get you at least 200 miles trip from it if I had to guess. It also would depend on how much sun you’re getting daily though. Is it worth the $2000 you’re going to spend to install the rack and pv panels electric hook up for backup battery pack. Also the cost of the car won’t hold value it’s overpriced. In 5-7 years teslas will be worth a fraction of the cost once they realize nobody is buying them anymore at their high listing price they’ll fall. I switched to no car and saved a lot more. ❤

Simple solution would be to connect the solar panels on your roof to the 12v battery system in your electric car through a small lightweight solar charger, that way it can charge while driving and things like power steering, brake booster, electric windows, radio and screen that most likely run off the low voltage 12v battery and not the high voltage pack, will be continuously fed by solar power. Then you can set it that when your 12v battery drops below a certain voltage, your high voltage pack takes over and through the DC to DC charger tops up the 12v battery when the solar can't. This should add range. To charge the high voltage pack directly from solar / inverter or mains, the car has to be off and stationary.

We own that same BLUETTI Power Station, and just bought eight 300W Flexible Solar Panels (2400W). This is one of things we want to attempt with our TESLA M3LR… 🤔

In Europe they are sold with CCS2 ports which, if I'm not mistaken, have DC pins. Are you sure DC can not be fed to Model 3 at all or is your statement true only with the US plugs? Thank you for your input.
@TheTechofTech
@TheTechofTech 3 роки тому
You are correct, and I should’ve been clearer. Yes, all Teslas can receive a very high DC current to “fast charge” their batteries. However, we’re talking 60V or so versus 480V and 6 amps versus up to 800 amps.
@ekrajb123
@ekrajb123 3 роки тому
Since solar panels produce DC and the car is capable of accepting DC, would it not be possible to "fast"-charge with solar panels? So it bypasses the various converters and instead feeds the power directly from the panels and into the battery, similar to how fastcharging stations does it? DC->AC->DC must have a pretty large conversion loss

Yes, as seen in the Aptera I feature in this video. Tesla does not have the hardware to allow this, but the Aptera is built with on-board solar.

How does this compare to your jackery setup video posted a few months ago?
@TheTechofTech
@TheTechofTech 3 роки тому
Twice the output and power and about 5x the solar input capacity. It’s LiFePO4 versus LIon for the Jackery, which gives it a 3,000 cycle life versus 800 cycle life for the Jackery. However, it’s nearly 3x the weight at 59 pounds.

Why did it just stop charging and why couldn't it start charging again? If you were stranded, do you charge it for 7 miles. Drive and then charge again? Or do you charge it for 7 miles it stops, and then you hook it up the next day and charge some more?

Since it is not a permanent drivable setup, why not use a rollup flexible 2000 watt array beside the car. Just roll it on the ground and off you go.

As I showed throughout the video, solar input was significantly less than power drawn from the power station. As I also mentioned in the video, the solar generates about a mile of range per hour you can keep the panels in direct sunlight. That’s not enough to be worth replacing the glass roof with solar panels for me, for sure.
@JessicaFEREM
@JessicaFEREM 3 роки тому
I'd really like it for tesla to have a solar roof because this thing won't die if you make sure to leave it out in the sun, that and you'd be getting tiny amounts of range throughout the day, and if you live in a flat, bright place, you'd basically be charging all day, possibly getting a good amount of energy from that. All you'd need to do is to put your car into neutral and push it in a spot away from the shade, and you'd be charging the vehicle, possibly at a higher rate than this, since the panels would be integrated into the car and don't have to go through a battery pack maybe tesla could make a car tarp with built in solar all over it, so when you're parked, you're both protecting your tesla and charging it at the same time

This would be very useful in Honolulu. - short distances - lots of apartments & condos - lots of sun - electricity cost is double or triple the cost in most states. - won't eliminate, but might reduce number of visits to overcrowded, hard to find charging stations. So in Hawaii, this would be great! PS: not just the roof, but adding solar panels to the hood would help a lot.

Multi junction solar cells will be efficient and cheap enough in 10-20 years they will be on the skin of many EV's in the future I think (hope). They are already reaching numbers at 40% efficient.

Is it technically possible to run DC-DC? I assume Tesla is limiting it to only accept superchargers :/
@TheTechofTech

The issue is that the DC input for Teslas is geared towards a heck of a lot more volts as well as amps. It would be possible, sure, but maybe not efficient using the exact same DC input as Supercharging.

I actually think this is amazing. In the UK I believe the average commute is 9 miles. A significant proportion will be 7 miles or under. So this shows that commuting solely on solar power is feasible. If you don’t commute then that could be 35-50 miles of range for the weekend. EVs put a lot of strain on the electricity grid and it’s only going to get worse. We need a scalable solution and what’s more scalable than solar panels on every car?! Granted, this depends on weather and where you park your car.

So you have 360 watts of solar panels yet it's drawing 10 amps at 120 volts (1200 watts, just multiply) - this means it will drain the Blueti battery (it's basically a giant battery bank) and then start charging at the 360 Watts or lower value. You may have to unplug the Tesla to let the Blueti recharge it's internal battery also as it may not output to the Tesla when drained...
@TheTechofTech
@TheTechofTech 3 роки тому
It's hard to see, but once the Bluetti AC200P hits zero, it automatically turns off the AC output, so there is no draw from the mobile connector at all.
