Phew. 3 and a half hours long. 3 years in the making. 30 locations visited. 100 sources used. 15 hours upload time. Delighted to finally have this out there. I’ll sort out a detailed bibliography and list of sources I used once I have recovered my mind a little... cheers all. Don’t forget to like and comment if you enjoyed this vid as it helps the algorithm to make it worthwhile and makes more projects like this one possible in the future. If you enjoyed it consider subscribing for 100+ other vids I’ve already made plus tons more epics in the future. Hopefully soon I should be able to travel overseas again and widen the focus out a bit from Britain once again!! Cheers for watching. Catch y’all next time.

I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields. I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible. I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes. Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. This. Was. FANTASTIC. You took one of the most difficult periods in western history - one where historians know so little - and made a THREE HOUR documentary out of it. You taught me *everything*. I seriously barely knew *any* of this - and I spent a huge part of my history major on emphasizing in Medieval Studies. I took at least one course on Britain in Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages, attended countless lectures, and read who knows how many books, and you blinded me with an entire course (or more) of material that was entirely new to me. What you set out to do with this documentary was a superhuman effort, and you did it with flawless style.

Thanks for posting this very interesting work. Watched it twice, back to back. I appreciate your frequent labels reminding us of the names, affiliation, and era of the people under discussion. The Romans were an amazing, practical, and efficient civilization, and yet faded and ended. We take our civilizations for granted, when in reality we are only a single disaster away from much more primitive and less ordered lives.

@Orbán Viktor Mihály There is so much history that most will never hear of or understand. I thought the Dark Ages were called such because there weren't many historians and not much was known. Knowing now that it was literally dark for generations because of whatever nature threw at the human race; volcanoes, meteors, plagues and incomprehensible weather conditions. This is an amazing body of work. I'm delighted to know more of the land where I was born in post-war Britain at Burderop Park R.A.F., Swindon. Growing up in West Texas I learned the history of these lands and not much besides the history of the European settlers. Not much of the history of those peoples that came here and made a new civilization. Thank you for the knowledge. I understand a little more of the ancients and what is left of those early Christian cultures.

Quality work as always, mate. I have just followed on your British Roman history post with this in one hit which gave me about five hours watching (it's OK, I have a sleep disorder and am insomniac) and have genuinely loved every second of it. Apart from the undoubtedly excellent historical content concerning a period which fascinates me, I love your cinematographic skills, if I may call them that. Presumably stock footage of a candle being blown out, flames and sparks rising, and the crucifix against the sun etc. coupled with entirely appropriate music just makes the entire piece so atmospheric. If you tell me you took all those images yourself then I think I shall form a fan club in your honour! I know you mentioned in commentary that the alleged "dark ages" are something of a favourite of yours so I am off for a trawl now to find something else. Another sleepless night awaits.

The mythos, the presentation, the era, the wonder, the speculation, the imagining, the simple truth that entire worlds (however small) can be lost or altered by the stroke of a pen is somewhat maddening & riveting. It teeters on defiance of the imagination. Yet there so equally defiant stand the ruins and records. I'd shake your hand and buy a sturdy round on your part, if ever we met. The British part starts at 49 oo. Before that the conquest of Europe is also very educational

I have a very high regard for your stuff brother. You have found your calling my man, but this one is exceptional. I have seen nothing from this period that tops it… Great writing and pacing, and thank you for the obviously significant work involved, I appreciate it!

I can barely put into words how exceptional this video is, I’ve always loved this topic and this is by far the best depiction of post-Roman Britain I’ve seen. I love how you go into detail for the reasoning behind so many things, it makes it both a magnificent watch and a truly educational video, bravo.

Three years to produce this were absolutely worth your time and the viewers'...a praise from a Northern Italian buff of British ancient and medieval history. A real in depth look on a very obscure yet fascinating era that is seldom found in these day of superficial knowledge and fast food education....Bravo!

Ancient British history is kind of bound up with Italian (Roman) history as well.

You’ve outdone yourself - I’ve told more people about History Time than I can count (I work part time in a book store and various topics come up all the time with customers) and HT should be much better known! Your work, narration, editing, choice of material, presentation both visually and content, is superb! I’m a history wonk so HT is catnip for me, this is surely one of the best, bravo!!!!
