$550 and the AirPods Max can’t even stream lossless audio. Never mind the $250 AirPods Pro. Why? Because they’re Bluetooth and - wait for it - Bluetooth is lossy. Well, lossy like trying to fit a river through a hose is lossy or… watching the cam version of No Way Home IMAX is lossy. You can have the best source in the multiverse but Bluetooth has such limited bandwidth, is such a narrow pipe, that you just can’t fit real, true lossless audio through it. Including Apple Music Lossless. So, what do you do? Well, if you’re Apple… maybe you kill Bluetooth. MDK it just to watch it die. And then you replace it - or maybe superset it - with a silicon and signal solution that’s just way, way better.

Rene, that "Russians took a pencil to space" thing is an urban legend. Both NASA and the Russians used pencils, but they were problematic because tips break and float around the spacecraft and can get in equipment or eyes. As do shavings from their wood. Bringing wood at all is a fire hazard. The Fisher Space Pen was developed independently by the Paul Fisher using his own money. NASA didn't pay for it's development at all. Once Fisher made them, he sold them to both NASA and the Russians.

The obsession with lossless audio is silly. Even the first tests with mp3 in the 1980s showed that in blinded tests most people weren't able to distinguish between "lossless" and even those first versions of mp3. 40 years of ever rising bitrates and audio compression development later I can't imagine anyone but the most audio sensitive people would be able to distinguish between lossless and current compressed audio formats over bluetooth

I can't tell the difference between good-quality MP3 and lossless audio ...but I can tell the difference between even the basic AirPods and cheap headphones, whether wired or bluetooth. Apple has invested in the right side of the equation so far, I think: sound reproduction! They make the most of whatever signal they get, and that's the part 90% of us actually notice.
@Dan-ks3tr

@@Wordsmiths I think you’re right, the headphone quality makes the most difference. But I feel like once you have the good headphones, the difference between mp3 and lossless is very noticeable. If you think beyond portable audio, lossless music streaming to a home audio system would be nice. And by home audio, I don’t mean a HomePod. But the scenarios that Rene paints are all moving more in the direction of Apple Proprietary, meaning you need all ‘new’ Apple components to take advantage of it. Meanwhile, poo-pooing Qualcomm’s AptX Lossless seems to be calling one licensed technology bad by another proprietary technology creator. In the end, the consumer loses, needing to buy all Apple products to take advantage of Apple’s proprietary wireless lossless audio, or buying products that work for the rest of the non-Apple world, because Apple will not support their proprietary lossless wireless solution along with AptX Lossless. Granted, Apple’s customer base is huge, so maybe it’s to their advantage to keep feeding the consumers inside the Apple walled garden, and screw everyone out in the cold.

Apple just needs to pay minor licensing fees to Sony for LDAC decoding, and it could have implemented great bluetooth audio years ago. The encoder is freeware and included in aosp by default. The fact that Fiio supports LDAC in its $120 btr5 mini bluetooth dac but apple is still using aac in 2022 in premium products is as absurd as the refusal to abandon the lightning connector.

@First Last What do you mean by "half-assed"? They put a lot of effort into aesthetics and marketing, but releasing products that are objectively BEHIND the rest of the industry in terms of actual power/specs is their standard practice. I understand there are valid reasons some people prefer Apple, but they consistently release products that are notably, definitively lacking as far as certain technical capabilities compared to similar products.
@junglejim101
@junglejim101 2 роки тому
@First Last That may be... but I'm willing to bet that Apple would rather adopt Bluetooth 5.2 since it would fix their issues with Bluetooth and bring way more features like LE Audio, Isochronous Channels, Enhanced Attribute Protocol etc. It stands to bring much more interoperability with future Bluetooth devices; it has a lot of functionality. As much as Apple loves to do their own thing they know how established and widespread Bluetooth is globally; (They're a member of Bluetooth SIG). Removing it or letting it rot in its current state would damage the UX. In my eyes they'll improve and update both technologies rather than leave one behind.

They are comfortable and great for phone calls/mic quality. Those are the only two things they are particularly good for if you are an Android user though. In every other aspect besides those two, there are multiple superior options for Android users (Bluetooth codec fidelity + overall sound quality, seamlessness and integration with the phone's OS, noise cancelling, battery life, durability/waterproofing, various smaller niche features). Totally agree here. UWB is the only likely successor currently on the market. Apple has already shown its ability to marry UWB with the need for efficiency and endurance (à la AirTags) of small consumables. UWB has the ability to push the kinds of speeds that would be required of a link needing to push up to 24-bit/192 KHz (a bitrate of 9.2 Mbps!!) of audio. I do know they're good at solving the seemingly unsolvable, but this would be hands-down remarkable if/when it does come to market.

Certainly when I'm in the city I can't tell the difference between a 128AAC, 256 or 320 when listening to my AirPods Pro. They all seem to sound great for that kind of earphone. @taidee

I understand the restrictions forced by Bluetooth, but why not have audio cable on the super expensive Airpods Max so that one can still enjoy those transducers to bypass Bluetooth if one wants, other Bluetooth headphones that it competes with. Also if you ran out of battery. I'm an Apple device user most even though I'm also anchored in Linux and workwise forced to work on Windows but some decisions Apple makes are hard for me to understand.

AirPods Pro used to be amazing and worth the money. Now after everything’s been updated to iOS 15 they are straight garbage audio quality has gone down and ANC went from amazing to trash. I used to live in NYC and when I would use ANC it would literally block the outside now perfectly could not hear the buses, trucks, honking, and the pure chaos of city noise. After everything’s been updated to iOS 15 ANC just went straight to trash with ANC, I can still hear everything from outside and people talking to me.

Something like LDAC would be enough for CD-quality lossless. I know a lot of audiophiles equate lossless to CDs bit rate of 1411kbps, but the reality is that most FLAC files stream at less than 990kbps (more like 500-700) and a great deal of 24-48 files stream at less than that too (hence the JAS Wireless Hi-Res labelling). One of the main problems with LDAC is the Android implementation which resets to ‘stable’ every time you connect. My Linux-based audio player, however, has no problem locking to ‘quality’ setting, so Apple should be able to manage it easily.

Bluetooth has been an awful experience since switching to iPhone. It was like this on the 11 Pro when it launched and it’s still bad on my 13 Pro. Supposing the AirPods actually connect, sound may still come out of the phone. Or I’ll be using my AirPods for an hour with no issue then somebody calls and the phone decides to use the earpiece instead of the AirPods. It’s a problem with all Bluetooth devices (except the Watch?) but it seems even worse with AirPods. Bad on iPad too

I bought AirPods Pro about a year and a half ago, after replacing my AirPods 2. I’ve listened to them all except AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro are just ground breaking. I just wish I could feel the inside of my ears vibrate more with some bass improvements, it helps with immersion when watching movies and playing games. My only complaint was corrected when I bought an iPhone 13. Turns out connection issues, and transfer issues between sound enhancement modes was the fault of my iPhone 7’s software I’m pretty sure, which is because I’ve had that phone forever. I clean my AirPods Pros and case every time I notice anything that isn’t white, and it’s probably the cleanest AirPods you’ve ever seen after how long I’ve had them. I also put a protective case on my AirPods case to protect from scratches because I unfortunately have a single scuff on the corner of the case from dropping them once, and that was when I decided it’s time for some protection. In summary, if Apple is able to make a next gen AirPods Pro 2 and improve on what’s there, it’ll be the best in-ear earphones on the market. The rule, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, applies here though. So I hope they can make improvements while keeping it somewhat the same.

I know I sound like an old man but I would rather have wired headphones or earbuds when listening to lossless audio. But in the future I might change my mind as the technology gets to a point where I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind test. I guess I'm just not that bothered by a wire.
