For me, her pauses are providing me with the information I didn't know I even needed. She listens carefully, answers her truths but the questions and answers are forever fleeting & she reminds us of this.
@phobos2k2

At the very end she talks about not listening to her songs very closely again after having listened to them the first few times whole-heartedly and being happy with them. She says she doesn't because after a while she knows that it's her who has changed and obviously not the recorded track. I think that's really a profound insight for any artist in any genre. If you continue to come back to your 'finished' work and nit-pick it and chip away at it, you run the risk of diminishing something that was whole and good only because you have changed perspective over time. It's a difficult thing to just walk away from something you've worked so hard on and say, 'It's done', but it's something every artist must learn to do--to just have the experience and confidence to say it's complete because I say so like she mentions with Designer. I'm a huge fan of her artistry! So glad I stumbled on her work!

I think the same goes for us consumers of art too, just because your not into something now as much as you used to be or you spent a lot of time listening to an album or watching a movie over and over again and now you're bored of/dislike it usually doesn't mean there was anything wrong with it, it could just be that your time with it is done.

The reason individuals like her are a blessing is because they make "being just me, authentically" seem so very obviously right. And possible. And not scary but just deeply beautiful. She's so blessed, she's an automatic blessing to everyone who surrenders to that rawness. Gosh.

I appreciate the sincerity evident in her responses to the questions of the interviewer. It takes both courage and humility, and a respect for the self as well as the audience, to attempt to answer such personal questions sincerely. Quite refreshing, at a time when so many artists mask their egoism with arch and sardonic irony. It ain't east being real, especially when we don't always know what that means, but it's the only way, if one hopes to actually experience one's own life.

The wisdom in her words and views is palpable, and it comes from her having made peace, to some extent, with her own existential struggles, ones that I believe we would all face at some point of our lives. I love that you get only the real deal from her. How is she only 29? I'm glad that she had found what she was not only good at, but also appreciated by many. I almost teared up on the part where she bared her soul about fearing her own fragility and the vagaries of her mind, as if she can be quite confused herself at times, and her having met people who would readily take and thank her what she had to offer, much to her heartening surprise. We really do thrive on the validation and recognition of our work - we may not ask for it, but it's a profoundly gratifying gift to receive, one that I might daresay motivates continued existence. Thank you for this refreshing and relatable interview FaceCulture, and thank you Aldous for putting so much thought into figuring out your responses!

Charles Howard Ih fab! Yes I watched that performance! Brilliant. I love Cornwall! I live in Brighton, just missed them! I discovered them, looked to see tours, and it had all ready happened! But I’ll be looking out for the future! I really don’t do big venue acts anymore, so would love to see such a unique act, in A fabulous atmospheric small ish venue! Although I fear I may be too late for that! I’m really intrigued by AH... she appears to me to be somewhat ‘method’ when performing her songs?! I adore the music, it really struck my interest in a way that’s not happened in years! Heard The Barrel and it haunted me, then when I looked up the video the visuals really got me hooked! As did most of the other songs. I found when I saw her performing songs her facial expressions really fed my interpretation of the somewhat disjointed lyrics! Although at first I felt uncomfortable to watch her?! But then felt it’s meant to be like that, as she’s baring her soul! Oh it’s so good to come across something so unique! Love the mystery!

@@Foxys1974 A wonderful reply from you. Yes I believe Aldous Harding knows just what She is doing, and likes to keep us filled with intrigued and mystery. A very intelligent Person indeed. Is good to read you like Cornwall. I must admit I found Brighton a little daunting probably due to visiting the place alone. I'd certainly visit your Town again though. I should think like most places more pleasant an experience within the Spring or Summer Months.

This interview is more like a psychotherapeutic session. In fact to such an extent that at times I was embarrassed and felt like an intruder in a conversation that should be private and closed. Conversation between patient and therapist. I don't want to be misunderstood. I don't think Aldous is a sick person ... just the opposite. It’s just amazing to see so much consideration, introspection, and responsibility towards her work and its impact on the audience at the same time as the world is harassing by Cardi B with WAP.

I remember hearing her interview on 6music's Mary Anne Hobbs show earlier this year, and being captivated by her talking voice as much as her unique music.

When she explains her choice for Designer as the title, makes sense to me, as an epitomy if her work, from what I see of her choicesin the recent songs they are very controlled in every aspect, beautifully so.

I found Blend on UKposts by accident. Chased down some other vids & ordered her Party - CD based on those. I definitely wasn't confused by this interview, she seems eclectic & interesting from her music & dance! Not disappointed at all. Joins my collection of PJ Harvey & ST. Vincent, Samantha Fish discs for very different reasons.

I'm reading the book "serving the servant" and a lot of what she is saying mirrors the artist mentioned in that book. I think she's a complete genius, probably extremely intelligent and uniquely herself.

only through art might i believe in it. This humans work (and her collaborators) closes in. and i love that she doggy paddles so earnestly in the complex waves created by the plop of her pop. tricky business. A++

Empty Bottle, right? Small venue with decent sound. Still kick myself over not being familiar enough, though intrigued. Let this be a lesson to just go and do these type of things when they present themselves.

"...she is Aldous and nothing more" But also nothing less, right? And that's important. She's a next-level genius poet, folk singer and visual performance artist and also someone I bet you could have a pillow fight with. Special.

2:56 "... what this record is about... finding purpose works for some people... [3:14] But I think the rush to know what that is or the sort of looming urgency to learn what that is and fulfill it before you die, can be incredibly crushing... [3:27] So, Id' [...] much rather be open and be honest to the fact that I don't know (all the time)..."

A critic had written her songs were highly personally symbolic/difficult to understand. So I found myself picking apart the imagery, the dichotomy of layer, in horizon (as I was going off to sleep). I get it, the different voices within her song, and the pantomime that accompanies them. As much as one might, I think I get it. She's fun to watch here as well, especially being trained to observe microexpressions. Sort of fascinating.
