The thing with Islam and Khabib is it’s not just wrestling they use. They use a lot of judo trips and throws and when they get you down they hold you down using their legs and hips etc which are techniques American wrestling aren’t use to that’s why guys struggle so much to get them off of them. American grappling and Dagestani grappling are just different

I have no doubt Volk is strong enough and he has the edge on speed imo the thing he needs to really worry and unfortunately he'll realize that during the fight is Islam 's understanding of weight distribution. Even though Volk is a cardio monster it's gonna drain him trying to get back up. And if he doesn't get up that's where ground and pound starts.

I am a big fan of Charles, but his strength was never tactics. He relied a lot on causing chaos and finding an opening in there. Which was hella exciting, but tactically speaking easy to counter. That's the one thing I never saw from Charles, that people like Volk (against Max), and Islam (against Charles) have demonstrated. I'm excited to see what this brings.

The problem with Khabib and Islam is that a lot of guys were so worried about their wrestling that they neglected their striking which they were better at and moved back instead of forward but from earlier fights it was clear Khabib struggled against strikers applying pressure to him.

If he focuses on his wrestling than he very well could win this fight. Volk is already a great striker and he is very quick on his feet, so it will be tough for Islam to land those shots against him like they said Charles for example. If Islam doesn't out dominate Volk in wrestling which is a lot to ask for, I don't see him winning the fight.

At this point, I think its Volk who might be under estimating the guys from the mountains, whose single job in life since ages of 4 and 5 has been to focus on the craft they have been learning. I know Islam is not taking Volk lightly, that would be a mistake. The difference is going to be the mountains, just my take on it.

In theory what volk says makes sense. That his footwork and speed will keep him away from islams takedowns. But that will only work in the centre of the cage. Volk is happy to fight going backwards, and Islam likes to pressure people up to the cage. This means that volk will end up against the cage sooner or later, and this is where those Dagestani fighters excel with chain wrestling. Volks mentality of worrying about the takedown when it comes is admirable yet extremely risky, it means he can strike freely but it also means he may be easier to takedown. He’s definitely backing himself, you’ve got to give him credit for hatching up such a ballsie plan. I think if he lightly pressed forward with this game plan it could work, it’s harder to shoot takedowns when you’re going backwards, and if you’re going backwards you can’t push someone up to the cage. This would make it more of a striking match, which would favour him. Also he should keep some upper cuts handy for if Islams shoots on a feint

If I had to bet money, I'd bet on Islam, but I wouldn't make that bet with nearly as much confidence as I would have when he fought Oliviera, Obviously, Do Bronx is a world class fighter, but I was fairly comfortable in predicting Islam would beat him. I think Volka has a lot better chance here.

I want volk to win, but he’s had a few close calls with getting caught in a choke. Brian Ortega got him in one early in the fight but gassed out and let it go. Islam won’t let it slip. His best chance is hoping Islam feels like he’s got to prove himself on his feet and try’s to slug it out, not very likely to happen. I’m for sure pulling for volkanovski but he’s got his work cut out for him.
