Zverev beat Nadal, Thiem, and Berrettini to win this tournament. On clay nonetheless. Whether you like him or not, Zverev has shown his growth. Even with the 2nd serve woes, he’s still top 8. He deserved to win the tournament.

His drop shots started off nice enough but they got worse and worse the longer the match ,if you see the highlights you'll notice most winners by Zverev in the 2 and 3 sets come from a bad drop shot form Berrettini and an easy forehand by the Russian .
@HBweisse
@HBweisse 3 роки тому
@@homelylad I agree with you. Moreover I think that Zverev won more because of Berrettini's faults rather than because of his own winners. There has been a slight decline by the Italian at some point and Zverev remained solid and constant. Between the two, it seemed Zverev was the one that suffered the opponent's game more, even if he did win in the end. I preferred Berrettini's game overall, but as you said he did 2 or 3 crucial mistakes with drop shots that also had an influence on his mental approach.

I don’t really feel his struggles have been as serious as some have been saying- he did reach US open final- he’s won 4 masters 1000’s and like 14 tournaments and is what, 24 years old? Congratulations to Zverev, on beating a formidable opponent. Berettini was on fire today and hit a lot of winners. But Zverev prevailed. I am thinking that if playing in best of three was so tiring, how will it be playing best of five in the French. This final, Barcelona, Belgrade and Estoril were really great, but very tiring for players.

I've always been a big fan of Zverev. I'm glad to see he's improving. As soon as he gets out of his own way and gets his mindset in order I think he can grow out to be one of the best in the world. He has so much potential it's crazy but sadly, he's still too inconsistent. I hope he can sort that out. This tournament must do wonders for his confidence though, beating so many strong opponents and actually winning it.
@pkoppula

When he's at his best like this, he's so tough to beat. And this is not his peak. Matteo played nervously from the start but still took the match so deep. He's a different player and will likely keep winning because he's humble and works hard 👍🏽

The slower clay courts make such a difference to Zverev, on hard courts he's so far back his hardest shots are not that hard any longer, and he's more vulnerable to getting dropped. He's so far back because he has a very long and slow forehand swing action. On clay the slow courts mean he can get closer as he has more time, making his huge forehand more dangerous while making him much harder to dropshot.
