My understanding of the shoulder attack is that its not illegal because there is no lock- there is an attack on the shoulder but uke is free to relieve it by rolling (it just means they'd give up osaekomi). So no shoulder lock. Same as if you torqued someones leg in turtle to turn them over.

3:45　you called the white was "Takeshi" . But it wasn't correct, "Takeichi" is correct. The sound of ”市” in Japanese is both "shi" and "ichi", each represents town and market. By the way, the sound of "竹” is "take" and it represents bamboo. I am a Japanese, so I am not so good at English and there might be some English mistakes in this comment. I really like your videos. Mashiyama can't go to the world championships at the moment because he is not in the top 100 in the world ranking for -100. He will have to participate in one of the last two remaining grand slams, and get a good result (at least top 5), to be able to participate. He can participate at the team competition though.

Is there a reason why maruyama is not selected for the worlds?

We don't know yet who's going to the World Championships. They'll make an announcement tomorrow. But he didn't participe in this tournament, which was one of the criteria to qualifu for the Worlds, so that would be an argument against taking Maruyama to the Worlds. My theory is that he's injured and that's why he didn't participate in the tournament this year.

Maruyama's only real goal at this point that he has yet to accomplish is to compete at, and win, at the Olympics. Knowing he has lost his opportunity to compete at both Tokyo and Paris to Abe because they selected Abe last year after the world championships means his only motivation to compete is to be able to potentially become a 3x world champion. He probably wouldn't consider it worth it if he knows the one thing he wants he can't get.

When you'r at this level, you can't be at 100% on two date. This year, the n1 goes to Olympic, and the n2 goes to world championship

Mechanically the shoulder lock is not different than an Omoplata, which is explicitly legal. My understanding of the arm/shoulder lock rule is that attacks on the shoulder ARE legal so long as they are coming through the arm/elbow, and the elbow is bent. In practice this means that most 'shoulder locks' are actually arm locks and are legal.

For me, this armlock was legal (even though atrocious to look at), because she was holding her opponent's forearm, which means she had control over the elbow joint, even though it is the shoulder that was being dislocated. I have been trying to find a complete document that explains judo rules... Impossible, even on the IJF website. So, of course, there's room for a lot of interpretation, as no one understands those rules, even referees. There is another a fight between Ono and Nakaya, where Ono does something similar to Nakaya and the referee doesn't stop the fight (and Nakaya wins in the end).

In the last fight, I find it disgraceful that the opponent in the blue judogi stood with a smile, for a job well done, in total disregard for unsportmanship conduct. Winning like is totally dishonorable.
