***** Yes, a lot of church music is sung by boy sopranos. Because back in those days women were a no-no. But musically it is also a very different sound.

+antonpetrovichkoch It's not only because "women were a no-no" when this piece was written (although this has sadly often been true). It was also then, and is today, a fact that young boys (i.e. pre-pubescent due to hormonal voice changes in older boys) possess a clarity of vocal tone, and frequently a higher pitch range, than many female sopranos. The vocal tone and quality of a young boy is quite different from that of an adult woman, even one with a very high range: a young boy's voice tends to be more "pure", if that is the word, although an older woman's style will ofen be more expressive/emotional. Even where a given piece *could* (based simply on its musical range) be performed by either a young male or an older female soprano, composers often write with one or the other specifically in mind, precisely because there *IS* such a difference in sound/tone/emotion (difficult to find the right word!) between the two. Sacred music often calls for very "pure" tones, in keeping with its "otherworldly" nature and intention, which is one reason why young male performers are often preferred when it comes to such pieces: it is precisely the great clarity/purity, and lack of adult emotion, present in their voices which is required/desired.

This piece was regarded by the Vatican as one of the most "holy", or rather most "useful", musical pieces they possessed in their library. So much so that centuries they guarded the piece and did not allow anyone to copy the manuscript. They where not prepared, however, for a special visit in 1770 from a 14 year old named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozard, who, on a trip to Rome with his father, heard the piece twice and transcribed it faithfully from memory thus creating the first known unauthorised copy!

How can one describe the most devine music? I'm turning 50. I have played rock'n roll, played the drums, danced on latina music. But when I learned about this music and started to read about it, a new world opened up. I have no words. One wanders of in a completely different world. One of history, divinity, in search of a soul. I am speachless.

I've been listening to this repeatedly over the past few days. I like to think about young mozart coming to church hearing this the first time, being stunned and captivated by it's beauty and committing it to memory. I have to say it really is one song to inspire you. It makes me want to learn to sing classically.

+RainAngel111 Then you shall have your work cut out for you, indeed. Start the journey now, it will take years for you to develop an alto or soprano voice to adequately sing this sacred text. Do not idly wish for something unless you are able to start the journey to its completion.

I am only a catholic choir tenor and only had one class, one quarter, of voice training at the University of MN. But I know it takes months if not years to sing like the professionals and with that said, it has to be a very rigorous teacher who will really get you to work hard. As I have gotten older, my voice has become strained and brittle and not as it was when I was in my 20s and 30s so in a year or two I will not sing in the choir. There are plenty of young people who can do it.

The wife and i were some of the first to visit New York after the Towers came down. We went out on the second day that flying was allowed. We went on one of the tour buses, pretty empty, and it drove past where the Towers used to be. There was nothing but wreckage. Later that afternoon we stopped at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. As we went in the choir was singing. It was this they were singing. Never forget it.

English Translation: Psalm 51 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

My father passed away exactly 20 years ago, in a warm august afternoon. He died at home, with his wife and kids as he wished. He was an alcoholic, he started drinking at a very young age to stay awake during long work journeys until he died at 54. I was 4 or 5 when it happened and I still remember people trying to comfort me saying the pain would go away, it's been 20 long years and it still hurts. Everytime I get home and I know I won't see my dad I miss my old man, and everytime someone talks about him I want to cry. I'd trade everything in the world just to sit and talk to him for an hour. My father was a very good man. I still love you dad ... Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, I promisse we'll meet again, somewhere.

I invite anyone to feel how this music lifts you to another place beyond the suffering of our lives on earth...close your eyes, and let it into your heart, it feels so good. I lost my faith at one point, not knowing if I had a future, then I found it again, and now, when I behold his majesty, I become so emotional. He is truly beautiful and merciful. Our father has mercy on all our souls. Never doubt him. He will never doubt you. If you don't believe in him, he will still have mercy on your soul too and you will all still be welcome in Heaven, friends:) When we need to forgive someone, it can be the hardest thing for one to do, but it is the most beautiful, comforting, loving and renewing feeling for one to receive. Approximate English Translation of the Lyrics: Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that they may be justified in thy words and mayest overcome when thou art judged. For behold, I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins: and put out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within my bowels. Do not cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation: and strengthen your spirit in me. I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would have given it: with burnt offerings: I will not be delighted. Sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Deal favorably, O Lord, in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar

Lyrics: Miserere mei, Deus Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam. Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me. Asperges me hysopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam: et exsultabunt ossa humiliata. Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne proiicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me.

Have mercy upon me, O God, after Thy great goodness According to the multitude of Thy mercies do away mine offences. Wash me throughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified in Thy saying, and clear when Thou art judged. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn Thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. O give me the comfort of Thy help again: and stablish me with Thy free Spirit. Then shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew Thy praise. For Thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it Thee: but Thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt Thou not despise. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon Thine altar.

+blessedandres : thanks! Listening and reading the latin text add so much ; but nonetheless the sound only, no words, may demonstrate tha music is THE perfect language! This is so remarkably true with modern poliphony too .

It is possibly the most sublime creation of the story for human voice, really the combination of the voices like instruments, creating music that connects with the sensitivity of the hearer. If peace has a sound, it has to be this.

Psalm 51: ave mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

It's so magnificent. I stumbled upon here because I was curious as to what Mozart pirated. Is it any wonder as to why it was kept under lock and key by the Vaticans? Even as one who primarily listen to more modern genres such as rock and pop, I cannot help but wonder at the masterpiece that is Miserere mei, Deus. If there was ever a thing that could make me close my eyes in awe, it is this.

Some background: "Gregorio Allegri's 'Miserere, mei Deus' was declared to be too powerful by the pope and locked away. Writing it down or performing it elsewhere were punishable by excommunication. A 14 year old boy heard it (it is about 15 minutes long), and went home and wrote it down. This boy was Mozart. He then smuggled the copy out of Rome."
