Here's a side by side 'race' of Zwift vs FulGaz up Alpe d'Huez. Which app is most accurate? Which one will I get to the top of first? Dig in!
Some baseline info:
- Both apps were run on separate Apple TV 4K system
- Both apps were configured for 100% trainer difficulty
- Both apps were using a KICKR 2018 as the power source
- Zwift was set as a controllable trainer, FulGaz was set as a power meter
- Both apps were positioned as close as possible to the same starting point
- Up we go!
- Zwift was set to use the actual exact Canyon bike I was riding, and then FulGaz was set to use that exact bike weight/configuration.
I'll publish some comparative data down the road here once I can digest all the files and perfectly align them.

Great comparison by DC here. But I note there is still a fair bit of confusion comments, about the source of the "choppy" video seen on the FulGaz ride screen. Unless you have some problems with your local wifi, or slow internet, the shudder in the video is ENTIRELY due to DC's use of Reactive mode in his comparison (which he notes several times). He did this to force FG to adjust the speed of the video, to the speed he is riding at, for this comparison. This setting works, but it means the app is constantly re-processing the video to match your speed, since it is unlikely that any of us will exactly match the speed of the original filmer (some will be faster than you, some slower). However IF you select Steady mode in FG, the video plays completely smoothly since it is no longer being re-processed in real time. What is often misunderstood is the belief that you lose the "reality" in Steady Mode - you don't. Your power is exactly shown as you put it down, your speed shown is correct, the only thing missing, is that your time over the course will be the same as the original rider's time, since the movie was not sped up or slowed down. So if you just want a good workout, with smooth top quality 4K video, stay in Steady mode in FulGaz - you can go as hard or slow as you like, the workout is real. If you're training for real world times on an actual route that FG has, like Alpe or Hawaii tri course, then yes, you will need to use Reactive mode, which can never play as smoothly because of the processing needed. The choice is always yours.

I don't understand why the FulGaz video is so choppy. My FTP is way below Ray's and, creeping up 10-11% gradients in FulGaz on my Kickr Core, the video on my iPad is nothing like as broken up as that. Granted, I haven't done Alpe d'Huez but I've done shorter climbs at the same sort of gradient. FulGaz suits me very well so don't dismiss it because of the quality of Ray's video - try it for yourself. To me it's the nearest I've found to cycling outside and the figures on similar rides compare closely with outdoor riding. Enjoyed the video, though! Thanks, Ray.

Ray, thanks for doing this comparison. I am big fan of FulGaz, having used it for years to ride with a buddy who no longer goes out on the road. I tried Zwift a few times but just didn't get it. I think the side by side, split screen test is interesting but perhaps not a realistic way to compare the two. Maybe doing the same ride back to back on each app, and then comparing the metrics and also giving your subjective impressions would be good? Thanks, Matt

issues: 1. in real life power is lower from altitude, assuming riding trainer at sea level, 2. Zwift assumes a Crr of 0.3%. If FullGaz is 0.5%, that’s approximately 2% difference, or around 1 minute. 3. I don’t know if software models drivetrain loss. On a smart trainer power is downstream of drivetrain, so that would be double counting, but with a crank or pedal based power, it should be modeled. But that would be around 2 minutes. 4. Zwift is optimistic on CdA. At 12 kph, wind resistance should be around 3% of power, so if that’s different by 2x, that would be around 1.5%, or 1 minute difference.

Just coming back to this after finally giving Fulgas a solid effort. It is awesome that you can ride familiar and new rides with great video. Definitely need to download and not Stream the video in my opinion. FulGaz takes some getting used to and it isn’t the most elegant or finished app but in concert with Training Peaks I think it is a refreshing change from Zwifting all the time. Don’t expect it to be plug and play. Give yourself a week or maybe two before you make it your go to. I expect most people have more than one training app like this. Maybe it’s your second app… like Rouvy/CycleOps used to be.

Hey Rainmaker. Love your vids but I think you didn't do justice to FulGaz with the choppy video look. I have used FulGaz for nearly 2 years and I love it. I download my rides in 4k b4 doing them and have never experience choppy videos like that, Its smooth and super slick when downloaded prior. If you are downloading 4 K videos as you are riding them of course it may be choppy but when downloaded prior no issues at all . I can download and ride at same time using 1080p with no choppy stuff. Also you are riding really slowly since you are talking so if doesn't show just how great looking FulGaz is when you ride at normal speed. I would love to see you do another FulGaz ride after downloading first and riding at normal speed. Anyway Keep up the great vids .

@@theway6196 I've been riding FulGaz for a couple of years or so, and I agree, DC Rainmaker's side-by-side did not do it justice. I suspect the problem is that the trainer was controlled by Zwift, not FG, and FG was set in reactive mode. A fairer test would be to ride with FG controlling the trainer and have Zwift simply get the power output. Since Zwift is not a real ride video, just an animated version (and not very accurate based on comparing the views in Zwift vs FG on Alpe d'Huez; Zwift is a Disney-version of the climb), FG controlling the trainer might work better. In any case, I think it's apples and oranges - Zwift is animated cycling gamification and FG is real ride videos. Obviously many riders love Zwift, but for those of us who prefer a VR experience that more closely replicates reality, FG is the winner.

I've just done very similar "experiment". To compare I took my own video (with very accurate position/slope data), I wasn't in best shape.. it wasn't my personal record. I'm able to run this video with "custom-third party" app (WattZap). Comparing "video" and Zwift I thought that Zwift will be more difficult (as at least hairpins are steeper in Zwift than in reality). The difference between me in "real ride" and "video" was 1.30 vs 1.27 (with "recorded" power). After some small corrections in weight/CdA (in the app, of course :D ), I was able to run it almost 1:1 (less than 20s diff, on the trainer). I fixed the weight in WZ (to have "competitive" bike, CdA untouched), the time was 1.28. With the same settings in Zwift 1.22 (100%, the power was less by ~5W in avg, comparing to "recorded" power, but most of the time I rode the same watts). Short review shows that the profile in Zwift is "more hilly", and the climbs are somehow "lighter" (do they miss something in the power-to-speed formula?). In some parts the gain is up to 30s on single segment (e.g. hairpins 12-13). I need to do some maths to find possible differences. It seems that AdZ is easier than real climb. EDIT. In different RLV apps (Rouvy, VeloRide) I had very similar results on "their" routes. Rouvy is "more difficult" (+3min), VeloRide "slightly easier" (-1min), both close to 1.30. Need to check how it is with FullGaz too.

It will be more choppy if you use reactive mode, where it adjusts the speed of the film to your riding speed. I no longer use this mode, always in steady mode where the film will be smooth at the original speed. That’s what happens when it’s filmed at a significantly faster speed.

You likely run steady mode, which I recommend for most people. You still control your power and speed, they correctly display, the only thing you lose is your "actual" time, which is usually meaningless on the hundreds of FulGaz rides you will never experience in the real world.
@alpsalish
@alpsalish Місяць тому
@@cmacd8879To clarify though, it isn't a real representation of the actual effort if you run the video that way. The choppiness doesn't bug me at all, but you need that choppiness to accurately ride the time you would need for your actual speed and power, no?

Why is the frame rate on Fulgaz so bad?
@fredsimon

he was riding slower that the person that recorded. so it is slowed down....

@@fredsimon so you have ride at the speed of the person who recorded it for it to work? Doesn't make sense.

Fulgaz should film at double or quadruple framerate and also have replay algorithm to smooth out play back when in reactive mode

does fullgaz always have that horrible choppy framerate

This test is quite bunk. You need to do in level/erg mode with constant power output, and on a TT frame in Zwift (draft effect does exist up the Alpe). I'm sure the gap will still be large, but at least it will actually have a semblance of accuracy. Generally find your work very good, but this is poor.

That laggy Fulgaz would drive me crazy. 5 years ago on Bkool it already worked better. Clear win for Zwift.

Rode up Alpe D’Huez in FulGaz last Thursday and the video quality was fine. I don’t like the video game looks of Zwift and enjoy the videos on FulGaz. Rode Cap Formentor the other day and that is just a stunning ride.

The UKposts clip and the video of a video screen aren’t the same as the app. The app delivers clean steady video. Try the app. You’ll be amazed.
